Roe's first post-surgery hike

Postby Liz » Thu Apr 29, 2010 1:27 pm

Roe said he would like to have a hike since his foot is healed, so I decided to take him on the 5 mile bike trail at Silver River, a trail I’ve never been on.
Image

5 miles seems like a lot, but it’s shady and level, so really a pleasant stroll. We’re starting off about 9:30 this morning while it is still cool. Want to come along?
Image

We have a choice of 2 loops, but choose the longer loop to the left.
Image

Blending in with the foliage.
Image

Can’t you see I’m only a leaf?
Image

Ooh look up ahead.
Image

She’s going to pose for us a minute.
Image

“That’s enough, I’m leaving now.”
Image

Can you find the black damselfly trying to look like a pine needle?
Image

I never noticed before that the sharp points of the thistle are as purple as its blossom.
Image

See?
Image

The trail follows this gravel road for a little ways.
Image

And then turns off again to the left.
Image

No wonder they filmed so many Tarzan movies here...these look like great swinging vines.
Image

A pretty little meadow....there used to be a farm here.
Image

And a resting bench across from it. we won’t rest long though, because when you stop, the mosquitos show up. Hope you wore some repellant.
Image

Mosquito breeding ground.
Image

The path gets narrower here. Live oak trees provide the canopy.
Image

Another turn.
Image

Photo op. This is my tick resistant outfit. Worked too, but you don’t want to pause under the trees too long...just long enough for a drink and a photo.
Image

Pretty green dragonfly. I wonder if the ones I saw on the river were blue, and the ones in the woods are green for a camouflage reason?
Image

Roe is pointing to the woods and I see why. Better reel him in quick. He loves to chase turkeys almost as much as chipmunks....and it’s heaven for him if he can roll in their poop!
Image

We’ve finished the bike trail....how about walking down to the river and sit a spell? I’ve got fruit and dog bones for a snack. We’ll watch the fish.
Image

This Rottweiller (sp?) is having a nice swim. Obviously he couldn’t read the no swimming sign. Roe cooled off too, but I wouldn’t let him past the end of the canoe ramp. I can hear an alligator grunting nearby.
Image

Ok, time to go home for a shower. Hope you’re not too tired.

Whew, that was quite a hike. Looks like mosquito heaven to me. I think I'd stick my feet in the cool water with Roe, but don't think I'd roll in turkey poop!

You go Roe! What a beautiful stroll! Bugs love me, guess it's my sweet personality! I usually smell like Eau de OFF in your neck of the woods. Looks like our Roe is back to his happy self, glad to see it.

This is my favorite way of hiking - me sitting at my computer while you do all the work and put up with the mosquitos. Thanks.

You are so good at spotting all the little details that most people would miss! How did you get that photo of you and Roe sitting on the bench?
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

By putting the camera on a post and setting the 10 sec. timer. Run fast, pose and smile.

I bet Roe was thrilled to get to hike again! And that looks like a great trail. Neat pictures. Thanks.

I enjoyed your hike too. Wish I could do that but I'm more like retiredhappy. Getting to tag along on-line is still better than not getting to see all the beauty you find on these trails. Thank you.
