YES, Sparkle! Bag Balm is what it's called, and my green square can still sits in the leanto where I can lather the stuff on and use it for repelling insects as well as people! Your description of the can made me 'see' its name on it!

Now I'll go to read the link that Barbie sent to see what horrible things might befall me if I continue to use vaseliney stuff!

Does anyone remember a product called Snare's Relief. Not sure that's how it's spelled. It's was some kind of rub my grandfather used all the time. It had a strong menthol smell like vicks vaporub. It might have been a Watkins product because I remember my grandmother using a lot of their products.

Hey, Girls,
Like Barbie, I TOO, am a licensed cosmetologists and after many years of going to classes,, cosmetology seminars, etc, (we call them hair shows), i have learned thru the years (since '69) that our skin is made up of protein and the only "moisture" it can absorb is more protein,, such as LANOLIN,, etc.. animal derivative..bla bla bla,, although i DO like aloe vera,,, but all this mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, etc.. is just a waste of time and product... so,,, stay w/ natural,,,for your hair, AND your skin. Anything but will just wash off, not absorb,, as Barbie already stated.

Also,,, for the bar soap fans,,, BAR SOAP is held together w/ paraffin,, and will ALSO clog the pores,, so,, I swore off bar soap decades ago!. I prefer liquid cleanser... and liquid bath soap. Ya don't waste it,, you put it ON your washrag!. It's more concentrated too.

Just a little bit of MY input.. to put in your head, gals!

also,, as for burning w/ a peel-off mask,, never heard of that either. I do prefer mary kay,, which is a RINSE off type,, not a peel off one. ALso merle norman had one, that i haven't tried in years,, but probably is good. Masks are spose to be only used sporadically...

As for only using water to wash your face,, well that's ok if you don't have oily skin and haven't used a lot of makeup, or any. But to cut the oil ,, in make up or just natural oils, you need some soap of some kind.. as for me, I'm pretty oily,, or use to be,, the older I get the less, thank the LORD!, i use a mild soap. I like glycerin base ones,, or just whatever I can get my hands on at the time. I know this sounds like a lot of info, but,, our complexion/skin is our biggest organ and deserves as much care as any of our other organs.. right Barbie?

Have fun with it all!

JA

would love to hear more input... and/or questions. This was my business for 40 years!

Well said! It is hard to find healthy products, especially ones that don't have mineral oil, but if you look hard enough, they are out there. But if you can at least avoid the really bad ones, that is a step in the right direction!
Shampoos and conditioners are another product with similar issues. Most just coat the hair (with wax) to make it feel soft but don't actually make the hair healthier.

Hello Everybody,

Yes, I pamper myself to the extent that I can afford it. When I was working full time, I had facials every two months and massages weekly. Is that pampering or taking care of your skin as you do your teeth. Manicures were and still are only for special social events ( I wear gloves for most chores and always use hand lotion), but pedicures are different. You need to take care of your feet. Now having said that, let me share some tricks that really work and don't cost much money. A wonderful facial scrub is plain yogurt (Stoneyfield) with just a little corn meal for a coarser scrub or oatmeal for a milder scrub. Wet your face and use the scrub instead of soap, rinse off with lots and lots of warm, not hot water. Do this daily and your skin will be very soft. Then apply a moisturizer with SPF (not sure about the initials) sun block, the best that you can afford.

In two weeks I am going to start a Reflexology class ( 8 wks) where I am going to learn how to give foot messages to myself and others. When I met the instructor last fall he gave me a valuable tip that I am sharing with you. Soak your feet in a dish pan, bucket whatever you want to call it, using hot water that is comfortable for your feet and add 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar. Soak away, read a book, watch a show, whatever. Towel dry your feet rubbing away dead skin. Trim your nails etc. Do this every week and your feet will feel great.

If you don't take care of yourself, who will?

Just want to add that when you soak your feet, add a bunch of marbles and rub your feet across them while soaking. Makes for a great foot massage! (I also discovered it makes a great ferret toy without water! They love to roll around on the marbles! LOL).

I've heard that about yogurt. I eat a lot of it, but never have used it to wash my face. As for apple cider vinegar (ACV), it has many uses. You can read about them online. I have used it for several years (Bragg organic ACV from the health food store) for acid reflux, when the pills started making me sicker. Miraculous  It has been a natural remedy since Bilical times. ACV is also a natural antiseptic. I could go on and on...can you tell I love it? Don't buy the clear stuff in the grocery store. All the good stuff is filtered out. You need the organic unfiltered type, with "the mother". I believe that is a natural bacteria that forms a blob in the bottle if it sits too long. I think you can use that to start more cider or something....kind of like friendship cake ;) I'm picturing the ferrets with the marbles, Barbie

OK! I took all you cosmetologists to heart, and I bought Burt's Bees hand and body lotion and hand salve today! It will take some getting used to the smells they have, but I'll let you know if they can keep my mummifying skin flexible! The lotion is 'Naturally nourishing Milk and Honey body lotion' and the salve is "Burt's Bees hand salve----a farmer's friend." They both say, "Never any sulfates, Parabens, Phthalates, or petrochemicals." They cost a small fortune, so they had better be as good as my dollar store vaseliney stuff!

They sound yummy, Soos! I'm sure you will get used to the fragrance. I just bought some tinted lip balm from Burt's Bees...with sunscreen, of course. I hope you threw out all your ancient stuff! I'm sure it was past its shelf life.
