Simple pleasures

Postby Sparkle » Tue Dec 29, 2009 3:37 pm

Peggy had asked if I always carried notebooks and pens when I traveled? Well I wanted to bring something. I had suggested to Carol that I look for sneakers or something, but she said to be careful, they are a proud people and don't look on themselves as being poor. So I started buying a few notebooks and packets of pens at a time. The school for the deaf seemed a perfect place to donate them. But I've found the way to the hearts of Mexican parents - be good to their children. This is the family who has the campground. Luis, Juanita, Juan Luis and Damaris. I took this photo and printed a large one and smaller ones of the kids. They couldn't have been happier. They took them down to show the Grandmother.

Then when I was putting away the Christmas decorations I found two kites that I had been carrying around forever and gave them to the kids. You would have thought it was Christmas all over again. They played with them most of the afternoon, then when it was dark, Damaris, about 5 years old, was sitting on her step hugging her kite. Then at 6.30am the little buggers woke me before the sun was fully up flying them again. Let no good deed go unpunished. So if we come back, which we very well may, I would stock up on inexpensive toys like that. So muuch pleasure at very little cost. On edit. Mexican children don't get the piles of gifts that our spoiled brats do. I think the BB gun and the princess dress was all they got and they were delighted with them.

Sparkle,.... looks like you have "aced" getting to know the family. They will always cherish those photos and remember you fondly. And the kites,... looking at that action shot of them in use tells the whole story there. Way to GO!

I love seeing kids play WITH toys, rather than watching toys PLAY. How delightful that you could provide such joy to those children and their family.

What a great way to share. Pens and paper sound like winners; would also think coloring books and crayons would be a hit . The whole family looks delighted in your great photo.
I agree, most American children have so many toys that they neither appreciate them nor take care of what they have. Note, I said most, not all - sadly the exceptions are rare.

Very cool you did that!

George and I would always bring school type supplies and novelty erasers and pencils/sharpeners when we'd go to tiny islands in the South Pacific. My main supplier was http://www.orientaltrading.com/. I believe it started out as a carnival supply house years ago (although I'm not positive about that). Take a peek around all the junk that kids love!!

Oh, gosh, Mitch!! I think we use to order all the trickets for our Halloween carnival, when I was a room mother for my kids in elementary school in the early 70s, from them!

Great pictures. It's nice to see the other side of Mexico, away from the drug cartels, border crossings and general crime. Thanks for sharing your pictures. Linda
