Day in Algodones, Baja California

Postby oregontocal » Tue Dec 15, 2009 9:42 pm

Jean, Beth, Jenny, and I headed over the border to Algodones today to take care of some last minute stuff, including me paying for my tourist card, all of us getting prescriptions filled, eating shrimp and fish tacos, and doing some general shopping.

I normally get a month's prescription from Wal Mart for $4, or a three-month supply for $10. However. today I was able to buy 100 tablets for $7 - quite a deal. Also in the pharmacia I found a large, 500 gram container of Bailey's Irish Cream Chocolates for $8.50. I have never seen them here in the states and they are absolutely delicious. I've got to make sure they last for a long time because they're so addicting.

After eating wonderful fish tacos and shrimp tacos from a stand, almost inhaling them, we wandered up and down lots of shopping areas, and Beth and Jean each bought t-shirt type dresses. However, they weren't quite my style so I waited. Sure enough, I found a stand selling hand-embroidered dresses and tried a few on over my clothes. Here's the one I chose. For $20 I consider it almost a steal. It's light and cool, which will be nice when we get further south toward the tip of Baja.

I also bought some lightweight straw Christmas decorations which will travel in the RV well. They will be good to mail one or two to friends.

Back in Yuma, we stopped at Al's RV for receptacle testers. We'll use them at RV parks in Baja to detect faulty wiring in order to be make sure we don't fry our electric appliances. Just a bit of caution.

We'll cross the border at San Luis Rio Colorado, near Yuma, head west, then south a little toward San Felipe. I've already turned off my cell phone and clock, intending to be on manana time for the trip.

I'm getting excited and looking forward to this trip very much and can't wait to get started. In the meantime, the four of us had happy hour at Jenny's this afternoon, with guacamole, chips, cheese, sausage, cheese dip, and nice strong margaritas. Needless to say, we were feeling absolutely no pain.

Nice dress - will be great to throw on over shorts to go into the churches etc.
Remember drive careful. watch for animals on the road - coming in here we were herding a bunch of cows up the road. in little towns watch out for unmarked topes - if you see someone in front of you slow down - SLOW down immediately there is a tope coming up. Get Clorax for your drinking/washing/coffee water tank - just a couple of drops will do ya.
lots of bug spray - you can get good ones in Baja. On the highway let the busses go - they drive like they are crazy. Don't remember if they were there but here on the mainland a lot of the semis haul TWO 53' trailers. They are hard to get around and they put off a lot of turbulance when they go by.
Every soldier and police man we have encountered the last couple of trips here and in Baja were very nice and helpful. Empty your tanks when you can - unless a lot has changed dumps are few and far between. You can buy some sanitizer in the produce section of bigger supermarkets to wash your fruits and lettuce and vegies in before you eat them. In fact we just bought some. or wash them in clorex water mixture - Not soap like our kid did.
Have fun have fun have fun take lots of pictures thats what digital cameras are for. Bill and Carol

Beth was dickering for a T-shirt dress. It started out at 20.00, went down to 15.00. Then as I liked them I suggested 2 for 20.00. The girl came back with 2 for 25.00. Beth countered with 2 for 24.00. The girl said 2 for 24.99 so we knew we had reached the end of the negotiations. Beth bought a lilac one with a Gecko and I got a white one with Hummingbird for 12.50 each.
We are still in the Yuma area, Beth still doesn't have her hearing-aid fix, she has an appointment for tomorrow, so we moved over to Mittry Lake for 2 days. Jenny and Dan gave us a great week, oh, last night Jenny opend a bottle of Tequila mix with Grand Marnier in it. After 2 glasses her tile floor began to look awfully comfortable. Then I eyeballed her recliner wondering if it opened flat. That's when I decided I'd better stagger across the street to my rig. I thought I'd check my e-mails and my computer politely asked if I'd forgotten my password? I couldn't even see to type! Went to bed (about 6.00om) woke up at 2.00am and made a plate of French Fries and gravy, went back to bed and slept like a log. First thing on my shopping list in Mexico is a bottle of that stuff!

We each had a Shrimp and a Fish Taco at this stand. The guy was really busy, there was a long line and he dipped the Shrimp and Fish and dropped it in the hot oil, then scooped out the cooked ones and laid them on the drainer over the oil, he heated the tortillas on a hot plate, then filled the orders. He never got excited and the line moved fast. There were chopped onions, shredded lettuce, homemade Salsa, hot sauce to be added.

Beth took a photo of this lovely courtyard. I love finding these out of the way spots.
