Questions about Gettysburg

Postby JudyJB » Sat Mar 20, 2021 7:06 pm

I am planning on heading to Gettysburg once I leave Ohio in early September. I am thinking of spending maybe three nights there. However, it has been several decades since I was there, and I have several questions:

1) I remember driving around the national park in order to see all of the battlefield. Do you still do that or are there shuttles? And can I drive my motorhome around? Or should I rent a car for a couple of days?

2) Or maybe I can find a really close campground and then ride my electric bike?? Except I am not sure I really want to do that.

3) I am assuming there is parking near the visit center, right? Big enough for my 32' rig? What about in town? I don't have a towed vehicle, so transportation is tricky in towns, but usually I manage.

Anything else I ought to know before I go??

I'll be interested in your photos and perspective! I was last there is summer of 1966, with my Mom, after I graduated high school. Have fun.

They have completely changed things around just in the last few years. They’ve built a new visitors center out away from downtown and they do have a huge lot with RV parking area. Plus the route for the self guider tour is basically reversed from what it was. If I remember from the last time I was there the tour does now go into town for a bit so I’m not sure if I would want to drive through there with my rig. I’m pretty sure they do have guided tours leaving from the visitor center. I’m not thinking I would like that since you don’t have the freedom to stop when and where you want. So with all that being said, I would be more inclined to rent a car especially if you want to check out anything in town. Check with Friends of Gettysburg website, I imagine they are there. The center is run by that group so our senior passes don’t work there for anything! The battlefield self guided tour is of course no charge. Maps available at the center. Sue, chime in here since you were there in the last couple of years or so. You probably could give better information since I just think we spent most of our time just visiting! Did finally get to the cemetery with Sue. Have missed it in all the times I’ve been there! I’ll check to see which campgrounds offer shuttles into the center and town. Have one in mind now but can’t remember for sure. I haven’t actually stayed overnight but have just done day trips since I’m only a couple of hours or so from there.

Judy, we were in Gettysburg about 6 years ago in our 31 ft Sunseeker Class C and drove the tour. We bought the tapes to guide you through the tour. There was ample parking for the motorhome for touring, but things could have changed since then.

In DC, you'll want to take the shuttle.

When I went to Gettysburg I did some driving around the battlefield, but I also was able to get on a tour that was leaving from downtown Gettysburg that took us all the way through the entire battlefield and that was really nice. There are some places along the road in the battlefield where pulling to the side does not really give one a Lotta room and this tour took us up on Round Top on a few other places that I probably would not have gotten to on my own. Figured the tour would give me a good look at the battlefield and if there were some places that I wanted to see I can always drive back on my own.

I’d like to go back to Gettysburg again as there are some things in the town of Gettysburg that I did not get to see. I went out there in June and it happened to be in the middle of a record hot spell. The temperature was at least 95° and the humidity was the same. It was a case of if you did anything, do it in the morning because by afternoon you were going to have to be back sitting in your RV with the air conditioning. The humidity was really stifling.
