Closet and door project

Somebody, don't remember who, asked me if I would post some picture of the closet and bifold door renovation I did. Here they are. I have a small closet just inside my side door that really wasn't worth much as far as storage was concerned. Shelves were about 9 inches wide and barely fit a package of paper towels etc. Plus wasted space between the shelves. So i took them out

I then painted the inside and got a couple of Rubbermaid Home Free Shoe rack kits and a flat storage shelf kit from Lowe's. They are easy to install, just put up the shelf bracket holder (can't think of it's name) and then insert the shelf bracket, put the shelf on and you are in business. Shelf can be cut to size with a hacksaw if needed.



After that just put whatever you want on them. You can buy just flat shelf kits or any combination you want. I am using mine to keep hats, gloves, summer and winter shoes, boots etc. by the door.

Now, as to the door. The bifold door wouldn't fit with the new shelves obviously as they are 12 inches deep. So I spotted a project on line that a couple of ladies did with a bifold door by converting it into a french door. Because I had the extra deep shelves in mine, I bought some 1x3 pieces of lumber and added 2 inches around the exising door frame. Then took all the hardward associated with the bifold door off. The upper track, the little metal part that is on the floor, all the hinges and anything else that is on the doors themselves, so you have just two plain doors. After that, take some 3 inch hinges and install them onto the door and then rehang the doors in place. Mine fit perfectly. i do need one more hinge as their really should be three of them but when I stain later, I will removed the doors anyway, so will add the third hinge then. Now I can open the doors just like a regular door, either both or just one.





I have two more bifold doors I want to do the same with, but they won't involve having to add framing. Just need to move the existing molding over as those of you who have bifolds, know the molding comes past the edge of the door frame a little bit. Otherwise it's just a matter of taking off the door, removing all the hardware as I said before, attaching new hinges and rehanging the door.

Got a better look this morning with wifi more cooperative ( don't want to accuse anyone, but son was up late steaming his Steam games!! ). I love how the added on trim to bring doors out came out. Sue, did you teach yourself these skills or were you a carpenter in another life? You sure pull off amazing projects and well!
