RV Insurance

Some of you probably read last month about my solar panel being stolen (or blown off) on my recent trip. I vowed after trying to deal with my insurance company (Allied, a Nationwide company, and one of a number of companies offered under the Good Sam umbrella) that I would switch companies. I was extremely disappointed with the service and the fact that the people I had to deal with regarding the loss seemed to know nothing about MH insurance even though I had a MH policy. I decided then and there to find something better. I ended up going with Progressive and saved $263/year with the switch. There's a fellow I met on the IRV2 forum back when I bought my RV and he had bought the same model just 3 months earlier even though his was not new and mine was. We sort of supported each other as complete novices when it came to RVs and RVing. When I told him my story of the solar panel, I found out he had covered his RV on his regular car policy. I suggested he check out some MH-specific policies with other companies. Today he emailed that he had switched both his MH and motorcycle to Progressive, will be saving quite a bit and is very happy.

So I just wanted to let everyone know about my dissatisfaction with the companies Good Sam refers people to and that even though I haven't had any claims with Progressive, so far I'm quite satisfied. It's so hard when you're a novice at all this, so I hope my experience will help others to really shop around before they decide who to work with and don't get pulled into thinking just because Good Sam recommends them that they're any good.

One other thing to check on is many people drop the collision while in storage. Problem is if some backs into or hits your RV and you dropped the collision while in storage you are not covered. Collision actually covers certain storm damage as well. Talk to you agent when buying insurance to make sure it meets your needs. Many people just assume and then find out latter they are not covered as they thought. Some insure for replacement cost, some only pay a book value. Some are based on purchase price and others are based on MSRP which is often a lot more.

I guess I'm just saying; know what you are actually paying for.

Glad you found a company you seem to be happier with. Also, since you have the pups, I think Progressive covers vet bills in animals are hurt in a car accident.

My GF is the (MFIC) (you guys can figure that one out) head of claims for the state office for the state of Oklahoma for a fairly large insurer. She could could probably help answer questions about coverages and how they apply when we meet up at the Kansas get together. She always tells me that most people are usually over insured due to fear factor.
Can't give the name of the insurer on the forum due to her not quite being retired yet, and possibilities of having to represent her company in legal matters.

yes they do, up to $500 if your pet is in your car and injured during an accident. I have Progressive and have always been
happy with them but haven't had to make a claim yet. Have had them for a good 14 years.

I decided, even though I'm happy with Hartford with AARP - to check Progressive - to get the same policy with the higher limits I have set, etc - my plan would more than double in cost! Wow. Glad some of you got good rates - I'll stick with what I have :) And that's why we all need to shop around and KNOW what we are getting and that we get what we need and want.

We've always had Progressive Ins on our RV's. One year while we were in Mexico in the smaller RV and the Alfa was in storage there was a big storm with straight line winds - it tore the cover off and really damaged the roof. The storage facility called us, we called Progressive and by the time we were home the roof had been repaired around $10,000 and we had a check for the cover. They've also paid for window repairs. Very happy with them.
