RV's don't bend in the middle

Leaving Cranes Mill today I saw something none of us ever want to DO. I'll try to describe so you can get the picture. there is a gas station with a really BIG dip in the driveway entrance. Picture tour bus (about 45') trying to pull STRAIGHT into said driveway. Well, the front end makes it across the dip but the back end is totally hung up. Police cars with lights flashing, traffic stopped cause bus is blocking the entire lane. Not sure how they got him out of there. I was almost tempted to just stop and watch.

Moral: RVs don't bend in the middle.

Wish I knew how it ended because mine sits really low and has some sort of thing (metal cage like thing) underneath. Sarah saw me dig up pieces os asphalt once. Getting hung up is one of my (many) phobias.

guess somebody wasn't assessing the situation before they made their move, guess the driver didn't think about
the tail end dragging, its funny, but.....the poor driver, how embarrassing and the damage to the bus...oops

I saw that happen to an RV once but didn't hang around to see how they got them out of it. When I had my 27' motorhome I learned to take some driveways at an angle to keep from dragging the back end. I was also careful not to go in some driveways. A couple of weeks ago when we had the big rains one of the roads I was on was flooded ahead of me. Cars were going through there but I would have gotten my electric step wet so I made the traffic stop so I could turn around. They are probably made to get wet but I wasn't taking any chances.

I was driving by my local grocery one day and a mid sized coach was high centered on the quite steep side entrance to the store. The guy was out wringing his hands while the lady was off to the side with a disgusted look. I could almost guess her saying its too steep and him saying shut up Mable I can make it. I did not stick around to see how they dragged him off the hill but also could not be too critical since on our first big trip in our bus hubby ended up cross wise on a narrow country lane with the front off the edge and sunk into soft soil to the frame, blocking all incoming and outgoing traffic on the dead end street!

This is not what I needed to see this morning

Rosie is now parked in my driveway instead of in the backyard, figured she safer in the front instead of under an oak tree if a tropical storm passes through. The back is pretty much flat, but the front does have an incline. Slow and at an angle, not looking to provide entertainment for the neighbors. Driving, no problem, but when it comes to backing up, I really wish she was at least five feet shorter.

Wow there are so many stations that have a dip... must be for water run off... going in at an angle really helps...
When I got the trike rack on my MH my son said lets go for a test drive... he followed me... then he contacted my son in law to make something to raise up the trike so the tires would not pop when there was a hollow area to go over... it works fine...

Readytogo: Those things under your coach might be drag bars. My 30' Gulfstream came with them so they would drag and not something more important. So glad to have my little Roadtrek now.

I believe that is what they are, but they make a horrible noise scraping the ground. I remember many times husband saying to calm down. That , not being able to find a gas station, and tires are my three main phobias! Wendy

Just read a blog of someone's mishap getting into a place that they then couldn't get out of with their rig.

My RV also drags occasionally because it has so much territory hanging over the end. I drove into a Lowes parking lot once, and a guy watched me and heard the end dragging. He said he used to own a Fleetwood and finally welded metal wheels onto the ends of the two beams that run from front to rear! He said it helped solved the horrible noise from dragging.

It is a horrible noise, but luckily I have never got hung up. I am usually watching for the drag marks in concrete or asphalt.

Believe me those skids in the back of some motorhomes can get caught on things. In NY mine was caught on a concrete slab and pulled it apart. I had to find someone to weld it back in place so I wouldn't catch it again. I found passing up stations with deep dips was my best bet, if no choice I go at an angle. I imagine all the stuff underneath you can tear up.

Judyjb: Yes the make aftermarket wheels for skid bars. I called Gulfstream and asked about them and was told putting them on would negate the warranty because they can cause the RV to lift too much on an incline and damage the frame. I complained about the scraping and they said that's what would happen and better the drag bars scraping than the RV.
