Speaking of which...we didn't hear from Sharon today. Either she froze to death or she made a bee line for Mexico!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Yup, pretty darn cold here in Oregon. We got about an inch of snow in Salem today. I had to drive back and forth between buildings today and our local public works department couldn't be bothered to sand the roads. They didn't even put de-icer down the last few days like they usually do so we had carnage all over town today. Its not like the cold and snow were a surprise. I managed to make it without an issue. The snow was very dry so it just got compacted on the road and turned into an icy mess. Being Oregon, most of our roads are crowned quite a bit for rain runoff so unless people were driving at the top of the crown, they just slid sideways to the curb when they tried to stop.

I'm working on a special project right now so need to be clear on the other side of town tomorrow for a few meetings. With it being so cold, I'm sure it will be a mess again. Unless, the local public works department can find it in their hearts to DO THE JOB we pay them to do!

I love snow and this if the first time I can remember that public works didn't treat the roads in advance, or drop sand after the event. I'm very disappointed.

Okay, I'm done venting.

Everyone stay warm!

JudyJB wrote:The difference is that homes in the places where they usually get snow, like Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio, are MUCH better insulated than homes in "warm" places like California. They stay warmer when heated with fewer drafts. Also, we keep our cars in garages, so we don't have to go outside to get into a freezing car, and the car is warmer in the garage anyway.

I think also that clothing is made differently in the midwest/northeast than it is in California. I don't think it would be possible to find a Vermont winter coat in a California store. Likewise, if one tried wear a "warm" California winter coat in Vermont, one would likely freeze to death.

Anne,

You're correct about the clothing fiasco. Long ago I decided that you can't find a decent coat here in Oklahoma no matter where you shopped. I finally gave up on the regular clothing stores and went to Cabelas and Bass Pro to buy my winter coats, gloves and boots. It makes a world of difference. Lots of their outdoor gear is designed to be warm enough to allow hunters to sit, unmoving, in a tree stand for hours at a time. And it doesn't cost much more than what you would buy at Penneys or Macys, etc. And not all of it is in a camo pattern. Lots of it comes in black now.

Good idea to wrap those California water pipes. lol Every little bit helps.

Stay warm. Prepare for the worst and pray for the best.

Anne, Cudedog, where in Sacramento area do you live? I'm in Roseville and we only got down to 27 last night. Glad we are not where you are. Tonight 10 degrees warmer and hoping we get a few flakes of snow and we get to see it, but I doubt it as it is supposed to be sunny Saturday. Maybe we can meet sometime.

Hello.

I live a bit north of Sacramento, I say Sacramento mainly because everyone knows where it is.

It was quite a bit warmer for last night for me too - when I retired about 11:00ish it was about 39 and raining. This morning (about 7:40 a.m. just now) it is a balmy 32. If it warms up a bit more and the sun comes out, the dogs can have some yard time, but only if.

My dogs have an extremely short hair coat, and not much undercoat, so they get cold easily.

A mini-meetup would be fun! :D

Happy days, everyone.

It has been 34-36F here today. Cold for this time of year in South Louisiana.
