Dont' know what happened to my reply from yesterday. Basically, it was Duh, why didn't I think of a fasten-on, net railing thing? No need to having something permanently built on. I've seen several good options after your suggestions. As usual, many thanks for the feedback. This is the rig I got, although for a lot less than the listing price after a couple of days of negotiations. I don't know what I'll be delighted with, or regret, but I think I've got enough to get me off to a happy start. The length (27') is perfect, and I like the narrow width (7.5') for ease of driving and parking. The large over cab bunk gives what for me is two rooms.

(Aha, I see I must have missed reading a page. Whatever)
I plan to lift my furbabies up. I have a very high bed now, and little dogs. They can jump up, but jumping down (and the stress it puts on legs, neck, shoulders) isn't good for them. They are getting used to "wait, Mommy lift you." I have seen dogs/cats that get hauled up (one into an apartment) by getting into a lifting device. I've always been the one to sleep on an upper bunk, so I'm used to it.
The back room, is just nice to have the room. I may sleep there, or use it for guests. Or maybe I'll take out the bed and make that a work room for computers. I'm still in planning mode on this, but the good part is I have the room and the flexibility.
My plans are sketchy until November, but I will be heading south with my ultimate destination as FL through the winter. Hope to see you there. :P

Very nice. Hope to meet you on the road. Are you going to the Jan GTG in Florida?

Thanks again for all your replies. Instead of an involved, expensive built-in rail, I found one at Walmart, Regalo Extra Long Hideaway Bed Rail for $25! Just has feet that slip under the mattress, lightweight netting, easy on, easy off. Also I can use it as a portable pet gate so animals aren't dashing out the door. Perfect. Now that was easy, once I slow down and process your thoughts on it.
As for the other questions, I dunno, I just feel comfortable sleeping in high(er) places. I have always been that way. I may use the back bedroom at times, but I expect that may be my work & sometimes guest area. With this railing, it will be flexible and easy to re-assign space. I'm ordering things like crazy now since I have a stable address for another month. Then I'm off and on the road, so I hope to get a lot of this kind of thing sorted out now.
See you all on the road, and in FL this winter. :P

I really like the idea of having a whole room that could work as office, den, library, crafts, guest room, etc. Have you checked what is under the bed? Hopefully, no water tanks, etc. I remember seeing a flip over desk/bed online once that was designed for a small apartment. It easily transitioned from the bed to the desk. Wonder if it was heavy.
