I have a Pre-Paid iPad - works perfectly for me. I turned it off last fall and have just now turned it back on for the rest of the summer - $20/month/1 Gb (Verizon).

I have a Pay-As-You-Go TracFone - it's okay. No complaints except dealing with their customer service.

No contracts with either service. I live in the boonies, so a contract cell phone just doesn't make sense where I live (no service). I can get iPad Verizon service where I live (for the most part).

OHBOY - you're starting to plan your trip details!!

I, too, have a TracFone which I pay for once a year, and it uses Verizon towers. (You can choose whatever company you would prefer and that has service in your area) I have over 1500 minutes left of talking on it, and it doesn't renew until sometime in Sept. or Oct. It costs me 99 bucks a year for tons of unlimited (geographically) minutes per year. If I run out any time, I can always go online and add more minutes.

My Wifi is also Verizon MiFi, which, after the cost of the device itself (can't remember what that cost) I pay 60 per month or each time I run out of megabytes, or whatever they are. No contract, and no automatic updating unless I choose to do it that way. So far, I have only run out of megs once before a month was up, and that was because I used it non-stop for music from Pandora while here these past few weeks. Both plans are perfect for me.

Happy travels!
