To Tow or Not to Tow, That is the Question

I'm certainly no veteran to answer here, but I have been towing since last summer. In fact, my decision to buy the rv I bought (24' class c) was in part based on the fact that I already owned a towable vehicle that was paid for and in good shape (plus gets 26 mpg). Yes, I do regret the loss of backing up ability and looking for parking in lots can be harder. Since I switch between moving everyday to staying in one place working for several weeks at a time, the car is more economical than driving my rv everyday. I love my Blue Ox tow bar. It is so easy to use. I guess you just get used to what works for you.

Those of us that tow with smaller rigs don't get to back up, but we still aren't a block long like some of the class As you watch rolling down the road. You train your eyes and brain to notice features in parking lots and gas stations before you pull in and know that you might have to drive down the road farther to find a turn around. More and different adventures.

So true Tina. It is really odd to me right now, knowing I can backup if I need to since I am not towing right now. Since I have been towing almost from when I first drove the MH, that is the normal to me. I do scope everything out before I pull in anywhere to make sure I can pull back out with a toad.

One of the biggest fears I have while driving, even WITHOUT a toad, is getting into someplace I can't get out of. I do find myself doing that scoping out while I drive. I look into driveways to see if there is a second driveway where I can get out. At gas stations, I check before I go in if there is enough space in front of pumps so I can turn enough to get out.

It really becomes a habit, just like checking mirrors all the time. It really felt funny to drive a rental car last week, which by the way, only cost me $85 for a three-day weekend. The Hertz guy from a nearby hotel rental desk picked me up at the campground and dropped me off when I returned the car. I could have gone with Enterprise for a bit less, but they also would have picked me up and dropped me off.
