Texas 281? Good Route?

Postby Dawn309 » Sat Sep 22, 2012 8:02 am

I am thinking of taking 281 from Ft. Worth down to the TX GTG. Is this a good road? 2 lane or 4? I think we will stay a week or two in the Marble Falls area on the way. I have never really seen the Hill Country and thought this would be a good opportunity. Also does anyone have any recommendations for CG's in that area. Considering staying in Burnett if not Marble Falls.

Dawn, check out the Kerrville area right in the middle of the Hill country. More to do around here, too. Kerrville Schreiner Park (used to be a state park) right on the river; By the River RV Park, and Kerrville KOA. Stay away from Guadalupe RV resort - very high prices and not well maintained and has a bar on the grounds with live bands that are so loud you can't hear your TV in your own rig a block away. Lots of restaurants, a senior center if your mom likes to play cards, movie theater. A half hour drive to Fredericksburg, a fun tourist town. Fredericksburg has a couple of nice RV parks, too. I oftenuse Google maps, the part that has actual camera pictures of various roads, to see what a highway looks like.

Over the years I have traveled 281 from Wichita Falls to San Antonio so many times I knew it by heart. Some places it is two lanes, some places 4 lanes. The road is fine all the way. You will go through towns but no biggy. The only campground I know of in Marble Falls is on the south end of the bridge away from town but might be kind of noisy and is on a hill so sites are probably level but the road would have a strong slope which might be difficult for your Mom. We used to stay in a neat little RV/trailer park about three blocks from downtown. Was wonderful like being in a state park but right there in town but the city, in their infinite wisdom tore it down. I really miss that neat little park for the wonderful location. Inks Lake State Park is between Marble Falls and Burnett. I haven't been in many years but it is a real nice park. There are other RV parks around that area and the lakes but I haven't personally seen them. Go online to Passport America and see what they might have that interests you. Beachcomber RV Park by Buchanan Dam offers Passport rates w/o limits but I have never been there.

We also stayed at Peachtree RV Park in Stonewall, TX for another GTG. $25/night, $150/week, plus TACO discount. If you don't have a TACO card, get one. They are free. Sponsored by Texas rv parks.

Pssst - it's Burnet (one t) - that might make a difference when trying to look things up. And it's pronounced like durn it. My TX trivia for the day.

And as Longdog stated 281 is a great road. The RV park in Marble Falls is right on the water. If you stay there, eat at least on meal at the Bluebonnet Cafe - their pies are to die for. I have family in Marble Falls.

Inks Lake or there's a LCRA park on Lake Burnet. There is also Lake LBJ headed towards Llano from Marble Falls. And then Fredericksburg is a fantastic little town - I love it in the spring when the bluebonnets are in bloom. Lady Bird Johnson City Park is a good place to camp there. Between Fredericksburg and Austin is Pedernales Falls State Park - I camped there this spring and really enjoyed it.

Thanks all. I will look all the parks up. Thanks for all the good information.

Maggie,  As soon as I posted, I realized was only one T but did not go back and correct. Paul came over for the blueberry pancakes I told him I would make for breakfast. There is so much to see in the area, it looks like, that I am going to figure out how to be pretty much in the middle. We definitely don't need a park with high slopes. I have visions of Mom on her chair at high speed going down a hill. I would be in a panic.

I really don't want to go down I35 from Ft. Worth. It is usually congested and I hate going through Austin on I35.

I definitely want to eat at the Bluebonnet Cafe and see the LBJ Ranch if we get over that way. I would love to camp on the water and prefer State Parks, so far. Just have to make sure have big enough sites and 50 amps. Chuck and I used to camp at Mineral Wells State Park back when the kids were little, but after we started to have a 5th wheel, the sites were too small so we weren't able to camp there anymore.
