New RV Title Problem, I think???

Postby JudyJB » Fri Apr 13, 2012 7:30 pm

I live in Michigan, but bought a new motorhome in Ohio two weeks ago. I paid Michigan sales tax, and the dealer assured me they would apply for a Michigan title because I currently live in Michigan. The motorhome has a temp tag and is parked in a storage facility right now in Ohio.

I am planning to make Ohio my domicile and am closing on my condo next week and moving all my belongings to near my son's house in mid-June.

So, today I got my new title--an OHIO title!!!! The Ohio title has my Michigan address on it and a slightly different price and sales tax amount than I paid, although the total is the same. (Ohio sales tax is slightly higher than Michigan sales tax.)

Now, what do I do? I cannot get Ohio license plates, can I, because I am not an Ohio resident?? Should I try to get Michigan tags?? If I do that, I might end up paying for sales tax again, and then I would have to transfer the title again in two months.

Anyone ever have this problem?

I am going to call the dealer tomorrow and ask what happened and if I can get another set of 30 day Ohio temporary tags. I am planning on an inaugural camping trip for three days on April 28-May 1. Will I be legal??

Seems to me you should be OK. You could get the Ohio plates and give your son's address as you will be moving to Ohio.
A woman I know here in Washington drives her son's car with Oregon plates as he lives in Oregon. Quite legal.

If you do register it in MI, you shouldn't have to pay tax a second time, especially since MI's tax is lower than OH's. But if you are going to claim OH as your domicile state, I would go ahead and register in OH. BTW, what address are you going to use when you do start claiming OH? Your son's? That would be the one to use then to register.

We live in Indiana have for 5 years - our big RV the Alfa has California plates - it is registered there - much cheaper there. They send me the renewal tags every year.
And until last year our cars were registered in Nevada - no problems with it.

When I was fulltiming I used my daughter's address for my "home" address. I had a PO Box but in Texas they won't mail your renewals to a PO box thus my daughter's address. Since you're moving to Ohio go ahead and start now changing your address.

If you want OH for your residence - then you are 1 step ahead of the game, and I'd register there and not ever register in MI. It costs to move things - and I don't see why you can't go ahead and change your residency now, also. I changed my residency 3 months before I moved from WI to AL. (That's where I first used as residency when I started on this adventure).
