Kindle

As I have decided to start reading again, I'm finding my hand gets tired from holding the book open etc. So lazy me decided to look into the Kindle Books player. Here is a link with a short video about it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/mpd/permalink/mWJ3HFOKDNYGT

I noticed in the video that the gal on the beach was reading, then decided to listen instead so plugged earphones into and it switches over to audio. I thought that was pretty cool, altho earphones tend to hurt my ears after a while.

If anyone has a Kindle and would like to share their pros and cons, I'd be interested.

I have a Sony E-Reader that my kids gave me for Christmas. I am enjoying it and the ability to download several books to take while traveling.

Don't you have an iPhone Lenora? If so just download the free Kindle app and you can read books on your iphone. I love it, my books are always with me and so far have only bought one as they have several that are free! I don't mind the small reading area & I find I'm reading a lot more now.
I also have an Audible account and download books to listen to but there is a charge for having an Audible account.

I thought I'd be very interested - till I realized the cost. That stopped me cold. I rarely pay full or even half-price for a book. I read too much to do that. I just love exchange libraries :) Maybe someday. Oh, and I used to do audio books, but quit that - so that part doesn't thrill me. I know some who love them and I know one person who says it tires their eyes more. My eyes get tired on the computer, but I can read a printed book for hours, so that comment made me wonder - anyone out there with a viewpoint on that???

My Sony E Reader has 3 size fonts....the medium size is usually good for me. I'm guessing the others have that feature too. I download books from the Sony E store, many of which are free or under $5. Best sellers are usually about $10. I understand you can download free (borrow) from libraries too, but haven't pursued that yet.

Yes, I have Kindle on my iPhone but the iPhone tires my eyes something fierce, even with dimming the light! The kindle has a gray background that is more eye friendly (they report), and I do like the option of the audio it offers. The iPhone is very easy to hold in one hand while reading in bed, but the small screen is taxing. I guess I need to find someone who owns a Kindle, or another type such as the one at Barns N Noble etc, and check them personally as everyone has different needs/wants/opinions.
Thanks for all your input!

Lenora, on your iThing, did you try enlarging the font, and changing the font to either sepia or white and then dimming it way down?
I love the books on my iThing.

Lenora, I think you have the right idea - in not only seeing one, but read a bit on one. Only you will know if your eyes will or won't like it. Yep, we're all so different :)

There are many of these but here's one site to check
http://www.overdrive.com
I ran a quick search within the library section and found 150 libraries within 100 miles of me that offer free book downloads. A recent note I read somewhere said more than 9000 US libraries now participate in the e-book program.

Yeah, I've really looked long and hard at the Kindle and one of the reasons is the amount of time I spend traveling on the motorcycle. Books take up a lot of room and I have to give up clothing space to take a couple of books. 2 books pretty much equal 1 shirt. Didn't know you could download books from a library, but it's something I'm sure gonna look into! That would be perfect for me.

Yep, did all that! ;)

That being said, today I used it to download a sample of a book and really liked the story so I paid to download the entire book. :P Oh, my aching eyes!
I do like the fact that Kindle keeps all my dowloads in an online library so IF something happens to my iPhone and I have to do a recovery, all is not lost and easy to retrieve.

How does that work? Is there a charge? How long does it take to download the books?

Another thought...if one is ready for some of it's other features, the iPod works the Kindle Op also and several reviewers have noticed that it seems easier to read with the way it is lighted.
