Thanks, Mitch - even tho I don't think it was the author's intention, the fact that Amazon makes Kindle not be usable by anything else, convinces me if I buy, I'll go with the Nook from B&N. I still need to go there and try it out. I also like I can read books free when sitting in a B&N. You know - if I don't like it - won't buy it. Prices of books are basically the same.

I read the article and was intrigued by the Kobo being brought out by Borders. The price is certainly attractive as a way to dip a toe into the e-reader market, and I can always upgrade if I decide I need more features. Having to connect to a computer to download wouldn't bother me at all. But if the Nook comes close in price and it looks like it might, then that is certainly more bang for your buck.

Why is it that all the 3G connectivity stuff is only through AT&T?? Where is Verizon in all this????

I got some info from Amazon this morning...they are offering Kindle for your PC for free. You don't need the actual Kindle, you just download the books on your PC. Is that new or am I just a little behind on these things? That sounds like a better deal to me and much cheaper. Any thoughts on advantages or disadvantages of this program? I am not ready to shell out a bunch of money for a Nook or Kindle right now but free books on my laptop would be cool, at least for now.

Couple of questions; I get a lot of free books at the library or CG or buy paperbacks from the thrift stores for a few cents. I usually never buy hardbacks, especially new soooooo what is the cost of downloading books to a Kindle or Nook? I can already download ebooks to my computer - just do a search for ebooks and several sites will come up.

There is no cost for downloading free books to the Nook - can't do it on the Kindle at all, unless they are from Amazon.

By the way, The Nook has a bunch of free classics right now: Free E-Classics at B&N Course, they won't work on a Kindle - as Kindle will only let you use their books - so you also can't download those free ebooks to your Kindle. Can on a Nook.

Probably a little tough to read in bed from your computer, especially if it's not a laptop!

Books I've purchased for my Kindle (iThing version) are a few bucks less than paperbacks.

That's been discussed even further up in this thread - - and I don't like reading on my computer, tires my eyes for any length of time - or maybe it's cuz I'm on it so much anyway. As Mitch says about reading in bed - this laptop I have now isn't even good in a lap.

Also, most of the books aren't free - and most of the free books - at the library, on bookstores like B&N, canNOT be used on the Kindle. That's the proprietary feature of it kicking in again. So, you can upload it- but might not have as many choices for books as you hoped.
