Banff and Lake Louise and More??

Next summer, I am going to head west across the upper peninsula of Michigan. My main goal is to visit Lake Louise and Banff, Canada, about the first and second week in September, which I have been told is just past the tourist season and into the senior season, but before it turns really cold and snows. After that, I'll drop back down through Kamloops to Vancouver before returning to the States.
Once I get past North Dakota, I am thinking about heading north into Canada on my way to Banff, but what is there to see there??? Anything really spectacular?? I see Regina and Medicine Hat on the map, but I know a lot of that area is plains and pretty dull, at least according to the Canadian comedians I used to listen to in Detroit. (Anything about Saskatchewan back in those days resulted in gales of laughter.)
Or am I better sticking to the very northern part of Montana and not heading into Canada until I get to Waterton, which is the Canadian city in the northern part of Glacier???
Also any recommendations for a campground near Banff or Lake Louise?? I figure those two places are so popular I need to make reservations as soon as possible.
