Hartwick Pines State Park - Grayling, MI

Postby Sandersmr » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:40 am

Sue took me down to this park to show me some of her area of Michigan. It had a wonderful logging museum on the property as well as a gorgeous, small log chapel in the woods. I think we would have enjoyed it a lot more if we had remembered the bug spray. It's hard to stand and read the display signs or take photos when your ankles are totally black from all the mosquitoes!!! :o :o :o It had nice trails and the woods were really beautiful!

Notice how many trunks this pine tree has - very unusual.

Sue can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it was for hauling logs over snow and ice. Logging was a year round endeavor.

One of my favorite places, but I remember last June also getting eaten by mosquitos there. Michigan DOES have mosquitos!

We used to snowmobile around there and on the nearby tank training area of the National Guard Base. They had some beautifully wide (100') tank trails that could be used in winter. No mosquitos then! I remember picnicking in snowmobile suits in 3' of snow in that state park with my kids. Good memories.

Good place also for cross-country skiing.
