Easy Clean-Up Coffee For One!

Postby mitch5252 » Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:04 am

I recently discovered this gizmo and I thought some of you here might find it useful, too. Hubby George doesn't drink coffee anymore - just me. Can't use percolators in the microwave and they are messy to clean up. French presses are, to me, a royal pain to clean, even if I have unlimited water available. This thing just struck me as the perfect camping coffee maker thing. I actually use it in the stick house now, too.

While camping, the hot water can be had from most any source - microwave, stovetop, campfire. You stick a Melitta #2 or #4 filter in it (or a cupcake filter in a pinch), spoon in your coffee, and pour hot water over the coffee. Drip, drip, drip - great tasting cup of coffee in way less than a minute. I use the same filter twice for my two morning cups (just put fresh coffee in over the wet grounds). Clean up, obviously, is a SNAP! I got mine on Amazon for a few bucks.

Love this! Have used mine for years horse camping in the backcountry.
Also set it on top of a thermos bottle for more than one cup.

I first used the Melitta coffee maker back in the '60s. Love it. Very handy when you have more than one coffee drinker and they do not share the desire for same strength brew (I like mine very strong, husband did not). Guests frequently had different taste as well. Additionally, I have found that you waste less coffee if you make it a cup at a time as you want it and you always have a fresh cup.
Paper towels and multi layer cheese cloth work as "make do" filters in a pinch.

I got mine off Amazon. I don't remember the vendor at Amazon, but here's one at the price I paid - $2.99 (vendor's name doesn't sound familiar.) I just got 2 of them about maybe 2 months ago. I really like it a lot and can't wait to use it in the trailer (so little clean-up!)

I think these are still plentiful - in both single cup and pot sizes.
Here's the "Official Melitta" site:

Kitchen shops and some larger department stores also carry them. Our local Publix grocery sells the filters. Note: My Melitta filters are "V" shaped not round.

I LOVE my little one-cup brewer! I got all of mine at either Price Chopper, Grand Union, or some such super market. I keep one in the leanto, the trailer, and here in the house. Sure does help save coffee, and you always have a fresh cup as long as you can boil water. You can also change flavors if you prefer a different flavor for the second cups! Melita makes the best filters for them...they come in various sizes, and I always get the one-cup size.

I bought one of these too. Found it in Publix (supermarket). I haven't used it yet, but plan to take it with me this summer.

Mitch, you're making me feel old!! LOL. Back before the days of those new-fangled Mr. Coffee machines, Melitta came out with these little individual cup filter-things (a communist plot, some thought -- everything was a communist plot!). I remember later buying my percolator-using mother a Mr. Coffee, and it was too technical for her and she returned it. LOL.
