Muggy Monday...

Well, it is barely Monday. Was too late to comment on Sunday's thread, so I will start this one early!

Soos, do you have bears up your way? I know they love blueberries so was thinking you might run into a bear or two while picking them.

Lenora, I eat so much hair all day every day at work, that if I find hair in my food, I just pick it out and keep eating

Woke up to rain yesterday morning. We don't seem to get the thunderstorms in the valley here tho. Later the sun came out and it got really hot and muggy! Luckily, I was at work all day in the cool AC. It was really quiet all day until about an hour before closing when everyone showed up for a haircut!

Gonna be around 100 again today with the humidity. I have today off so will stay inside and clean house. Boring but must be done...

Hope you all have a more exciting day than I will be having! Stay safe and cool!

Sunrise over a cranberry bog...

Good morning!
Nan and I explored some of Cape Cod yesterday afternoon and evening. Today we'll go back early in an attempt to beat the crowds, haha.

The cranberry bog is adjacent to the cg. First time I've seen one and up close. You can see the cranberries growing...right now they are green. When they are ripe, they flood the field, and the cranberries float to the surface for harvesting.

Hope everyone has a great day. It's been beautiful here.

another beautiful day here in the PNW... should hit 80 again... as long as i sit in the shade i am fine... I dont know how some of you handle the 100+ tempts! I finished pressure washing my driveway and sidewalk the other day so thats done for the yr... Really need to do the patio, but its not that bad .. its under an awning ..

The sunset over the cranberry bog is pretty! We have those here near the coast... My x neighbors use to have one, but got out of the business after many yrs.

Friends and i went for a nice Sunday ride to check out a couple of campgrounds ( not state parks) one was a real dump, and the other was more of an RV park... everyone lined up like sardeens in a can, I wasnt impressed with either one of them, but it was a nice drive anyways... I will stay with the state parks! I am looking fwd into returing to Tiadnapam on the 14th.. we decided to stay 4 nites this time...

Well everyone have a great day......

GOOD MONDAY MORNING TO ALL!

I remembered to shout RABBITS very early this morning when I woke up at about 1:00 am. Perhaps we will all have good luck all month!

Liz, I guess, as you are already in Cape Cod, you went right past Newburyport and Gloucester and Plum Island. Cape Cod at this time of year is akin to Coney Island, I assume! I hope you two have a great visit, however. Beautiful cranbery bog sunrise.

Barbie, yes, we do have black bears, but I have only once seen one while blueberry picking. The kids were small, I had my van parked on the dirt road nearby for them to hang out in, picnic, color, etc. when they got tired of picking. Then I looked up and saw the bear, sort of standing up, sniffing the air, and trying to see what that thing was in the blueberry patch----me, stooped over to pick! I left my bucket of berries there and slowly walked back to the van to make sure the kids knew about the bear. I closed up the doors, and we watched the bear go about foraging for his own berries. When he got far enough away, I slowly walked back to get my bucket, and back we came to the house. I pick here every day in my own blueberry fields, and have never since encountered a bear. While picking up porcupine quills from a road kill on the paved road a couple of years ago, however, I felt as if I were being watched as I was all bent over getting quills. When I looked behind me, a large bear was watching me intently. My truck was parked quite a ways away, so I slowly stood up, turned to face the bear, put my hands up high in the air to make myself look big and menacing, and the bear whirled away and disappeared into the woods. I am sure he didn't know what I was down low like that, mostly motionless while plucking the porky! I have a great espect for these black bears, but they do not frighten me at all.

Time for me to mow the lawn again, and turn off the well pump for a rest. I also need to take my canoe to the pond!

Hope everyone is having a good Monday.

Surely I'm not the only one asking this question - why?

Mitch I don't know what Soos wanted with the quills but after reading about our beloved Sparkles escapades with dead animal carcass Porcupine quills seem relatively benign! Here is a story about a skunk skull that Sharon posted a link to, I love reading the old posts from Sparkle she is still my hero! This particular story was on the old forum.

" Now that were on the subject of dead cow heads I guess this is the place for the dead skunk story. I spotted a dead skunk at the side of the road, and as I collected skulls at that time I decided I needed it for my collection. The roadside mowers were working in the area and I didn't want it mooshed, so I went home for a shovel and tried to scoop it up. I was overwhelmed with the smell and gave up. But I WANTED it! So I had a couple of right smart Bourbon and Ginger Ales and got my shovel again. I kinda staggered back with it (it was the odor of course) I put it in the field and it made a real pretty skull."

So one never knows what attributes Roadkill may hold for someone!

I'm also curious about the quills!
Sparkle was one of a kind!

Slept in with the kitty this morning. Now to get motivated to start cleaning! Being the first of August, I need to start looking at ads for places to live now for next month. That is coming up quick! Still thinking about moving down to San Diego so I think I will post my resume on GC's website and see if I get any responses down that way.

Have a great day!

I hear that! I wish more cars drove by our house at night, so I could use this lovely gift from my thoughtful pal, Carolyn (sunshinecruiserTN)...

I love that Sparkle story - so glad to have it resurrected :)

We have a poor skunk here in the cg with 2 broken legs. Not sure what's been done - everyone was terrified of getting too close and having him/her release it's scent. I meant to ask today if they decided to go ahead and catch it. I wanted to cry when I saw it. Poor thing. It was easy to fix the goose in trouble, a skunk isn't so easy.

Thunder has started up here - hope that means we'll get some rain and maybe the humidity might drop a tad. Was much lower himidity over the weekend. I'm off tomorrow - wouldn't mind having one of those days tomorrow :) Just asking, you never know, maybe I'll be heard.

Yesterday I got notice from one of my best friends that she had to take her husband to the hospital yesterday. He has fluid on the lungs and in the immediate xrays, they are also worried he may have cancer. They know there is more than just fluid involved. So, please keep Tom in your thoughts.

I make porcupine quill earrings and jewelry with the quills and beads and baubles, etc. I must say I have a bunch of them 'curing' now, which means waiting for me to get my act in gear and make some Christmas presents. Sparkle and I would have made quite the team, scouring the roads for kills and loot! I so do wish I could have met her.

Beth, I am sending healing powers to your friend's husband, Tom. I sure do hope what they are seeing is some kind of infection which can be cured with medications. Fingers crossed here.

Oh Beth! I hope they catch that skunk and put him out of his suffering. I would catch it even with the risk of being sprayed! Poor thing! That is SO sad! Maybe they may have to shoot it if they can't/won't get close to it.

So sorry to hear about your friend's husband too. I hope they find out there is nothing serious going on and he will be healthy soon!

Re the skunk...most towns have an animal control person who will try to trap it/euthanize it. It sounds like the humane thing to do would be put it out of its misery.
