STILL CHILLY MONDAY

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

STILL CHILLY MONDAY

Postby Colliemom » Mon Mar 28, 2011 7:05 am

Morning all,

Still chilly here at the 45th this morning. Around 0 degrees, which is warmer than it has been these past couple of days. Warmer weather is coming, but will be moving in slowly. Each day is a bit warmer than the one before. Once that NW wind gets gone, that will make a big difference.

Not a heck of a lot going on around here right now. Mostly just monkeying around the place. Finished up all my little craft projects, so not going to start anymore right now. Gotta do some house cleaning around here too  , like that's really exciting news

The only news I did get on my front was from one of my co-workers that I bumped into at the store yesterday. She and our lead ranger are close friends cause their families do things together a lot. Was together with each other this past weekend and she told me that it became official, we now have a new boss coming. The manager from Brimley State Park in the Upper Peninsula will be taking over. Not sure when though, but I suspect that it will be before I start back to work. Although it sounds like a long way for him to relocate (Brimley is about 130 miles from here), it's actually closer for him as he lives 50 miles roughly north of here. Also bumped into another co worker whom I haven't seen all winter and we chatted in the parking lot for a bit. There is a bit of nervousness running through all of us I think. This will be the 4th manager I have worked for in the 15 years I have been there, one being an interim manager. But after rawhile, we will see what his management style is and he will see how we operate and it all comes together. Change as we know is enevitable and without it, we would not grow and learn.

So today after I clean the house, I am going to take a run over to the park and see what's up and also run down to the Ice Cream shop and pick up my Girl Scout cookies I ordered. The which of, will promptly head for the freezer till camping season. And no I am not having an ice cream either. I gave up sweets for lent and have not touched, cakes, pies, cookies, ice cream and what not for over a month already. And have to say I haven't missed them either. Been eating strawberries, watermelon, jello etc.

Might make some firestarters today too. Good quick project for while I am waiting for temps to warm up and snows to melt away. Got enough egg cartons, wax and sawdust to get started. For those of you who might be interested in what I am doing with all of that, it's an old throwback to my Girl Scout years and is still used by some today. You get some cardboard egg cartons, fill the hole where the eggs go with sawdust, then melt paraffin wax and pour it over all the sawdust till it has soaked into it and the surrounding cardboard. Once it dries and hardens, just close up the carton and store till you are ready to make a fire. Some folks use small Dixie cups for the same thing. Break off a couple pieces and put one on each side of your twigs, leaves or whatever you use for tinder. When you have your kindling and wood added and are ready to start the fire, just light them and they burn like a candle for quite awhile. Gets a fire going in pretty quick order. I melt my wax in an old coffee can set in a pan of boiling water on the stove. Then I can just reuse the can the next time I make more. Another tip for you too. When you are raking your yards etc. in spring, keep some of the leaves and twigs and put them in a bag for your tinder. That way you will have dry tinder rather than scrounging around looking for some. And if there is any construction or remodeling going on around your area, grab some of the scrap wood they throw out. Excellent kindling. I've gotten to where I wlll stop and pick up scrap wood in some places if I happen to see it tossed out for the trash pickup

Have a great day all.

Good morning Sue and all others to come.

We got some rain overnight and everything is wet outside. But the sun is now peeking through the clouds. May get more rain later today & this week. We need it, so that's ok.

I'm meeting a friend today to go walking around the town of McIntosh. We may make that a daily event while I'm here. Laundry is also on the agenda but noticed the washers are already in use this morning. So that will wait until it's less busy there. $1.00 a load...not bad.

May your day bring pleasant surprises and beauty where ever you are.

Morning all! 27* and we're suppose to be getting 2-4" of snow. Hope they're wrong!

Sue, I make the fire starters also but insteand of sawdust I use the lint from the dryer. Seems that I have access to more of that! Also I pick up the pinecones in our yard to use for kindling. Usually have a big sack of those in the out side storage bin and a pail full on the patio for the fire pit.
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

Good Morning everyone... have a good walk Liz nice cool day to do that will only be 73 much better than the blast of heat we have been having...
Sounds like the ladies in the north are anxious to go camping... I have not had one fire this season... that may change on my way north who knows... it is still going to be chilly in the 40s there... wind is calm here so will put my awning up later...
A friend is bringing pizza over this evening so that should be a great time... pizza and talk amongst three ladies is great...
Today I will vacuum after I get awake... not much else going on...
Have a great day...

Good morning!

WOW - 4 inches of snow this morning. Drove hubby down the hill and the rest of town only has a trace. We are just a few hundred feet higher in elevation. Winter wonderland at our place this morning. Looks like we'll have sunshine through the rest of the week and then rain/snow again on Sunday. Oh spring!

Love the firestarter idea! I'm gonna make some. I'm sure we'll make some fires this summer.

I'm working in the RV this morning. It's getting so I'd rather be in the RV than in the house. It's cozy, private and more and more "home" every day.

Okay, off to read some more posts and see what eclectic things I can learn!

Have a GREAT day!

Hello everyone!

It's just noontime but I was busy at work and didn't have a chance to take a break.

It sounds like there is cold weather almost everywhere and even snow, too. It's chilly in MD with temperatures only in the low 50's. We're going to stay in this chilly trend through the end of week, so I can see lots of campfires this weekend for our first weekend out this year in the motorhome.

The business I work for is celebrating their 50th year in business this coming Friday. They have a photographer coming this afternoon to take some group pictures for an ad that will be running in Friday's daily paper. I need to return to my office for these pictures as I usually get off 2:00 on M-W-F. They are allowing me to take off an hour early so I can get my workout in. While I'm in town, I'm going to buy new house batteries for the motorhome so hubby can install them this afternoon.

I wish everyone a great day.

GOOD AFTERNOON ALL!

I am very late today, as I left St. Cloud after a break in the wild thunderstorms that ransakced that area since a long time before dawn. Molly and I closed our eyes and hid our heads under the covers as the winds rocked the trailer, the lightning flashed even through the sleeping bag, and the thunder was, well.....thundrous! During a brief break, I made a mad dash to dump my porta potty in my son's house, leave them a note about what I did to the pool, which was vacuum it briefly, scoop its surface, and cover it, and then we made a mad dash for the truck with all the stuff to head home.

No sooner had I gotten out onto 192 heading for Kissimmee and John Young Parkway, than the heavens literally opened up with torrential rains and nasty, frequent lightning! I had slowed down in the right-hand lane to 35 mph, as the roads were flooded and the visibility was nearly zero. Out of the corner of my left eye, I spotted a flash of a white pickup truck who was traveling much to fast try to slow down in the left-hand turn lane. Suddenly, he began spinning in a tight circle, like our trucks do at home on ice, and before I could get past him, he had made about 5 or 6 doughnuts while trying to regain control and stop. Thank heavens he managed to keep the truck in that center lane and not across the highway, or there would have been a hellacious pile up with me in it. When I calmed down enough, I pulled off at a weird little bar/coffee shop/dinette called Corner Roadstop, or something, where there was an abandoned gas station over-the-tanks cover, drove under there, and shut off my motor! Then I spotted the sheriff sitting next to me, watching his radar and cars trying to stop at the redlights. I stayed there until I could see the road again, at least 20 minutes, and the lightning had slowed to about 3 a minute instead of constant! I was a long, scary ride home! Florida in the summers is NOT for me, with storms like that every day! I was SO happy to get off the highways and onto my little village quiet roads, and eventually into my driveway!

So here I am, between showers-----we definitely need the showers----catching up on my internet stuff before the next storm hits.

Enough of this.....gonna get some brunch and see if it's ok to get Molly out in the yard for a bit.

Happy rain, although I won't be dancing in it this time with the flashing lightning!
Life is about learning to dance in the rain
Happy travels!

Southeast Michigan is not so cold as "Up North" is. It was 20 this morning, but sunny today with a high of 36. Supposed to creep into the 40s by the end of this week, and maybe into the 50s by next week. As long as it stays sunny, I am happy.

Started a new project at work today, so not so boring as it has been. (Hardly anything to do but have to sit in front of computer for past 2.5 months 8 hours a day. Try it sometime. Booorrrinnng.) This project will take 50-60% of my time and last almost a year, so nice to be a little busy. Will be interviewing a lot of plant people to get info for 8-hour module for new course. Will fill in with other projects as they come along. I was a bit worried about getting laid off, but not now.

Hoping for more sunny days this spring!
