And it’s Saturday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

And it’s Saturday

Postby Colliemom » Sat May 10, 2025 7:32 am

God Morning, sun is rising in a clear blue sky, temp is 50°. Going to be another great day. Yesterday was a gem. Couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day.

Got a call yesterday from plumbers wife to let me know he had a cancellation for the afternoon and can come install my pressure tank if I want. So that got done. One less thing on my calendar for next week. Have a hair cut and CD expiring on the same day he was originally supposed to come. So while he was doing that, I was out getting my summer stuff out of the shed and put out. Also finished the bottom to my one raised garden bed. Now just need to nail those boards down and drill drain holes. Ned to get some landscape fabric to line the inside. Then put some filler in the bottom and get the dirt to throw on top. Today’s project is to haul some stone from a neighbors to put behind my garage to keep rain from splashing dirt on the siding. They want to get rid of some of it that they have in the yard. And I might move my Shasta daisies and cone flowers.

Catherine, sounds like you are making progress. Why not just keep sone of your sea shells and put them in decorative jars and then get rid of the rest so you don’t have so many. A layer from one place topped by a layer from another etc. or even glue some in one of those triangle display boxes they are use for flags. Then you can display them. Shelia, seems progress is being made on your end too. You could do an estate sale after family takes what they want. Would save you time and make it easier on you as others have suggested. . Judy, quite a trip you have scheduled for the U.K. But tou will see a lot and sounds like fun.

Beth, sorry your A/C is not working right. I need a new one too. Looking a free standing one like I had before. I asker to move and put away when not needed as opposed to lifting a window unit in and out every year.

Have a nice day everyone.

Morning Sue and all, going to be a lovely day here so number one and I are going to the crab deck for lunch. I get invited to every occasion but age and vision. I usually choose to stay home but today I really need some outdoor air. Sue, I have read about turning raise beds into hoop Gardens. Search that sounds like something that you could do to extend your growing time and a project that’s up your alley. Sue’s suggestion of a freestanding AC sounds perfect for you too. Lots of good stuff on this site. Time for breakfast and finish my coffee. Have a great day and be safe. Loving this microphone.

Good morning. Cloudy and cool outside so good day to work more on my raised beds. I kind of had a slow down with my glitchy back and it still comes and goes but very much better than it was. Since I have arthritis in both hips that could have something to do with it maybe. Oh well. Getting older is just not as much fun as it used to be LOL

Judy, you should always ask them for the NON childproof caps.

Managed to get a few things done yesterday. Installed my cargo mats and back seat mats to protect my carpeting. Since I never have my third row seats up I bought some mats that cover the back of them when lying down. They seem to fit really well and the plastic inserts for the tethers snapped in easily for a change. Everything fit well. Had to buy some new spray nozzles and a hose as they usually only last about a year it seems before they leak. Tne nozzles (cheap plastic) have lasted a couple of years but when I turned the water on I got a very cold shower so bought 3 new nozzles and one hose. I like those lightweight hoses to use in the back yard but once they spring a leak POOF no more pressure. I have a Zero G hose for the front yard that I have had for several years and it is fine so only one hose needed to be purchased.
I also have to check my drip system and make a few adjustments. Need to repair one I cut in my zeal to get rid of the dead plant that didnt not want to budge......cut it right in half LOL easy fix tho I have lots of extra parts. Then will check all the drippers and make sure they are not clogged or disappeared for some reason.

Think I will make some spaghetti for dinner with some Texas toast, then I will have some leftovers to have. Next week have a few appts....yearly visit to my primary, take my neighbor for his colonoscopy appt, and a haircut.

It’s a beautiful sunny morning here after a couple of gloomy days. So today’s agenda is to work outside. I’m glad I managed to get the yard mowed the other day, it was think but would have been worst today! We haven’t been able to walk at the project since it’s dirt road but managed once this week! Buddy was so happy. We did some training but mostly I let have stop and sniff as he wanted. I had some dental work done on Monday so have been on soft food diet. It’s more of a pain than I thought it would be! I had gotten rid of my food processor so ordered one that should come today. Don’t think my smoothie machine can handle what I want to chop up. This seems to be my month for appointments. The dental last week and this week I have to have an ultrasound and possible biopsy since they saw something when I had my mammogram done the other day. Then the end of the month is to take care of the “bump” on my wrist. It was basil cell so will get that taken care of. I’m most concerned for the ultrasound on Monday and what it’ll show. Guess when it rains it pours! Meanwhile I’m just trying to keep things as normal as possible. At least as normal as my life seems to be! I still look longingly at the rv and hope I can get out at least a couple of times this summer. No big plans but an overnight here and there. I’ve started to wonder if I should try to sell it since it’s not good for it to sit all the time. Looking forward to hearing about your trip to the UK, Judy. And all the other activities you all are doing. Still to soon for gardens here since we could still have a cold snap. In fact I think I saw that west of us was under a frost warning last night! Didn’t quite make it here which was okay with me! So I hope you all have a great week and have nice weather.

Good morning, all.

Sue, I have often thought of getting one of those free-standing a/c units. As you know, it gets really hot here - I do have a whole-house a/c system, but it is expensive to use, and I only need to cool the room I spend the most time in - my living room/kitchen. I know the free-standing ones are a bit pricy to purchase, but with my summer electric bill edging up on $500/mo. (because the a/c needs to run almost all the time in the summer), I would like to figure out a way to get those costs down.

Sue, would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Karen, I think we have the same drip system - I put mine together from an online company, Drip Depot. I LOVE how easy it is to set up and make repairs. Mine has been in the ground for about 4 years now (can't move it in and out of the strawberry patch without damaging the plants) and has always worked perfectly. And we do get some freezing here in the winter. I hope it lasts a couple more years before I need to begin to replace it. The system has been a godsend - I couldn't do a garden without it. I ran out of "spare parts" for the system a while back - elbows, end caps, the like - put in an order (I like to have replacement parts on hand for when the lawnmower takes out a section of drip hose!) and the parts came in the mail in a couple of days.

Shirl, I love how everyone here is always ready to help everyone else. I don't know what I would do without all of you ladies. Thank you all for being there.

Sharon, so glad to hear that you are enjoying your time with your sweet Buddy.

Have a great day, all!

Beautiful sunny, warm day here! My zinnias are blooming, one of my two plants. That is all I can take care of!The two plants are growing like crazy! They must love the sunshine and heat where they are on my small deck.

Anne yup Drip Depot all the way for me. I had it at my other house and knew it was what I needed for here. I bought the tubing (these are not Drip Depot)with the emitters in it to run thru my strawberry plants that way I can move it without damaging the plants if I need to. I also use it in some of my planters.

Good morning gals!

I have been trying to get caught up on here for a few days! Lots of posts this past week!

It is horribly windy here this morning. :o Wind is coming from the south which is not typical. Trailer is really shaking! I keep hearing noises outside and hoping nothing is hitting or blowing off the trailer! There are new baby doves in the nest so I am hoping they are staying safe and protected by mom or dad. Can't believe how tiny they are when they first hatch! They would easily fit in a teaspoon! Last week it was cool and raining off and on for several days. Not much rain tho, just 5 minutes of sprinkles off and on all day. We need some decent rain here! Now we are pushing 100* here this weekend! :o

Today I will be inside working on small projects. I ordered two new blinds for my bedroom windows. The ones I have now are aluminum and don't work well anymore. I should get those tomorrow and get them put up right away. Will also start putting the UV window film on those windows too. One room at a time...

One day last week, I got really motivated :o and went to the storage unit, took everything out and reorganized it. I now have all my gourd stuff on one side (I wanted to see how much I had to see if it would fit in the bunk room along one wall. I think it will). The rest of the bins I organized by books, photos, nicnacs, X-Mas, and misc. Looks much better now and I will be able to find stuff without having to go thru everything and make a big mess. Now I need to go thru the stuff in the bunk room and get that all out of there so I can get started on removing the top bunk.

I had a great visit with Beth and Peggy the other day! We sat outside at the BBQ place and had a nice conversation! Forgot to take a photo tho!

I have been trying again to find a primary doctor out here. All the ones I called are booked out until at least May of 2026! There is a real shortage of doctors out here! I did get an appointment in October with a gynecologist for my annual female exam.

Yesterday, I went to the county Work Force place to see if they can help me find a job. The gal suggested I work with a disabilities worker since I have several physical limitations and they can help me find a job that will accommodate me. I am also scheduled for a interest, skills, and resume class in a couple weeks. Things sure have changed a lot since I was younger and looking for jobs! I asked about their training program (paid training at local vo-tech schools) but they said their budget was slashed due to the recent gov't cuts, so that isn't much of an option now.

Those stair lifts look good but are probably very expensive! But a good option for people who don't want to move from their multi-level homes.

I would love to have a apartment or condo with a small patio or deck. Maybe someday. This trailer just feels too confining and, well,... like a trailer. It is OK for now but eventually, I would like to find a "real" home.

Karen, when I lived in Vista and needed dirt and/or mulch for my garden areas, I would leave the bags in the back of my car, line my wagon with a plastic bag, and scoop the dirt/much from the bags into the wagon and then wheel that to where I wanted to put it. That way, I didn't have to lift the heavy bags and potentially hurt my back. Was a little messy but much easier. And planting out here in the desert is done in the fall, not the spring. Nothing grows here in the hot summer.

Sandy, I am surprised they are not having you get an MRI of your back before giving you a steroid shot. I had that done so they could see exactly where the problem was and where to put the shot in. Hope you get some relief. My last shot has worked for a year now. I just occasionally get sciatica pain if I am bending and twisting at the waist.

Judy, Manuca honey is really good for healing throats, etc. It is from New Zealand and has great healing properties, better than regular honey, and it tastes really good! I get mine from Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09KZ ... UTF8&psc=1 Hope you feel better soon and also find your perfect new little home!

Sue, I have recently read that landscape fabric is really bad for the environment. Here are a couple things I found out... "Environmental Impact: It is derived from fossil fuels, contributing to global warming, and can release microplastics into the environment. Harmful Chemicals: Landscape fabric contains petroleum and other harmful chemicals that can leach into the soil." I read that putting down cardboard instead is better. Something to think about...

I have had a portable AC before. They work well for small spaces. If any of you decide to get one, look on Craigs List, etc. They are much more affordable and there are a lot of them for sale.

OK, I should get busy here on something... Have a good day!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Just been chatting with a couple of people I know on a CLL forum. One of the people I chatted with is a retired doctor in Canada who has had CLL and various treatments over the years, including CAR-T. That is a treatment where they treat your blood to attack T cells, which involved transfusions and then redoing all the vaccines you had all your life. Anyway, he has also recently had a cough which he was pretty sure was whooping cough--said after a few coughs where he could not get his breath, he got close to passing out! At least I did not do that, although it was very scary to gasp loudly to catch your breath after a coughing bout. (Here is an audio of the sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbGOP0NJOQw.)

Anyway, I am doing better, less coughing and more normal coughing, and even thrush is a little better. Still tired out, however.

Anyway, just a reminder that even we adults need to keep up with things like tDap vaccinations. Whooping cough has been going around lately because of lowered vaccination rates in babies and children. Even if you have a normal immune system, it is a good idea to make sure you get this vaccination every 10 years. I know I was getting close to that time limit, and now I need to find out how long I should wait to get that vaccine that we think of as being only for babies.

Ginger picked me up early (for us lol) today to head to Fort Huachuca and go through the museum there. Barbie, it was windier there than at my place in Benson, thought it might pick me up. The museum was very interesting and it had an auxiliary museum next door that was very interesting, also. This military fort is very easy to get lost at. For us, anyway. And they were out of hand out maps. We did a few times. We also went to the cemetery specifically to get a picture of a statue there. We got our passes, Ginger's is good for a year, I think, something to do with for her car. Mine is a few months. We might go back another day and find more to the museum-like areas. Lots of interesting history there.

I've loved reading all the posts today but have forgotten the comments I wanted to make. :? TY is happy I'm home and needs a walk, so that's where I'm going.

I’m anxiously waiting for my oldest granddaughter’s graduation from college in St. Louis tomorrow. My daughter and entire family are there in person and will have live pics for me to see tomorrow. I wasn’t able to go because I have to be home to feed special food to my dog, Abby, via syringe. Knowing my daughter, the pics will be wonderful. Other than that, the only thing I’ve done today is walk my dogs 3 times and have recorded 12,207 steps so far. Tomorrow will be an exciting day.

Barbie, regarding your response, I did have an MRI so hopefully they’ve done everything right before I have to go for the cortisone shot. I hope it works. It’s sure a long time to wait for it though.

I heard the ring announce someone was in the ... so looked and it was my nephew returning the trailer it was full so he took it too the land fill and returned it...then an hour or so later still trying to talk myself into doing something like getting dressed and have lunch guess it was more like two hours later... his dad showed up so hurriedly got dressed he was here on and hour for some time my other brother showed up as well between them they got the trailer filled again oh and nephew came back over... normally my nephew who lives here in town shows up when his dad is here but he didn't today... guess since it was their dd's b'day unreal that she is 17 she is autistic more higher functioning but probably will always have to have supervision of some sort...so perhaps they had something funner than cleaning out the basement to do I know that they needed to go to Idaho Falls and get their truck ... it actually seems strange to not see them much this weekend... I made it through another bin most of it was garbage did ind a picture of an older couple that was from a life time ago ... can remember his name but struggling finding his wife's name... one name comes to mind but not betting that it what it is... beween yesterday and today I was weary I finally made some instant grits and cheese only thing I could think of that took NO effort had to grate the cheese and measure out the water though.....
it sounds like everyone had a good day accomplished a lot have or are making decisions
it's hard Lyn to ask for help but you would help them right?? so give them the opportunity to help you
drives are good Shirl glad you got out
Anne have you considered looking into getting some solar panels??? I know that it takes awhile to get to where you see a savings in electrical bill my sister lives in Vegas and had really high electricity bills... she is leasing them and I think it took about a year for the bills to come down but they did substantially I don't remember the figures of before and after though so can't mention that
for those that garden I've seen a weed killer that according to the commercial works ... what else could they say but they also say it's safe for both animals and human's called Spruce I believe...
I wish one of you lived here having issues with the tv forgot to ask brother about it again... I told him last week that with Hallmark Mysteries you put it on and there is a notice saying that channel should resume soon at that time it would tell what was on ect so sister in law suggested that I turn off the box after they checked with the cable people to see if there was issues with that channel... there wasn't so I turned off the box let it sit for a bit turned it on still same notice but this time it wasn't telling me what was on... so put in the channel I wanted to watch then when it was time to change station I put on the guide to see what sounded good and it says to be announced on ALL CHANNELS how in the world are you suppose to check and see what you want to change to if you can't see what is on the stupid channel??? If brother had been here by himself I would have asked him to look at it but with my other brother here they were more busy got more done though.... but I would really like occasionally to go to mystery's oh well one day maybe it will work correctly .... I've thought of changing the batteries in the remote but logic says that wouldn't be the problem or would it???
you all have a great day

I decided to stay home yesterday since there were flash flood warnings. Today I brought my son a box of hot sauce I got at the rally in Baton Rouge. The hostess of the rally got samples of Louisiana products to put in our gift bags. A company that makes hot sauce gave her 40 boxes of 12 bottles each. She was trying to get rid of it and told us that anyone that wanted an extra bottle couldn't have one bottle, we had to take a box. I took one to give to my son. He can pass them out to his friends. I probably throw away more hot sauce than I use.

Catherine, my dad was stationed in Florida when I was a kid. Mother had collected some shells and put them in a big tin like cookies or fruit cakes come in. I remember playing with the shells for a long time. I guess kids today wouldn't be interested in playing with shells.

Anyone thinking about getting one of the portable air conditioners don't forget they produce water that has to be emptied or have a drain for it. I told my sister they could have the small air conditioner that I had put in a bedroom when my central unit was out if they would come get it. I was going to remind her about it but since it's almost summer I might wait.

For a change we didn't have any rain today. I noticed that our river is out of it's banks in Abbeville.

Good morning, Sheila, and all who follow.

Sheila, I have looked into solar panels for my house from time to time - the main slope of my roof is to the south, so panels would be well-placed - but the cost is prohibitive. We are maybe talking about $30,000 for a basic system. Not in my wallet.

As for leasing - I am seriously "debt avoidant". With leasing, the monthly lease payments never end until they come and take back the solar panels - and when they take back the panels, there are holes in your roof (right through to the studs, where the panels were secured) that need to be repaired, and (after the repair) you then need to replace the roofing (about $15,000).

Good idea, but, for me, not gonna happen.

Sheila, I almost never use any kinds of pesticides or herbicides. I read the book "The Silent Spring" when I was a young person and it really stuck with me. And the problems with the chemicals described in this book are worse now than they were then (although the chemicals today are different). So for weed control I use household vinegar, which works pretty well. Household vinegar is about 5% acid, there are other types of vinegar that are 20% acid and up. These higher concentrations of vinegar are fairly safe to use (with precautions) and kills weeds even better than household vinegar. The kill doesn't last as long as actual commercial herbicides (weeds must be re-sprayed from time to time) - but vinegar doesn't persist in the environment for the next 20 or 30 years either.

My two cents.
