Rainy Friday

Good Morning. Windy and col here at the 45th . Currently 63°. Heading to around mid 70’s... Rain, possible thunderstorms on and off through the weekend. So will be good time to catch up on housework, get some paperwork filed, work in DP etc. But first need to go up toward town to roofing company and financial advisors office. Had some gutter guards installed on my house Wednesdsy and when they went to do the garage, they found rotted wood damage to the fascia at one end, so basically gutter bracket has nothing to attach to, plus some other rotted area and some cracked shingles in same place. One of those hidden out of sight things. The roof was installed in 1993, so is at the end of its life and I had been thinking of replacing it next year. So gutter cover is on hold till that gets fixed. Called out roofing company and after checking things over, we decided to replace the whole roof now  Needless to say, gonna cost some green. Think it’s time to pilfer some from my IRA I have been saving for an emergency.

Anne, glad to see you are having some temperature relief. Shelia, sorry you are having so many issues with your mom. That’s not easy to deal with. So glad you went the Hospice route. Irmi, that’s a lot of driving in one day. Way more than I want to do. Safe travels the rest of the way. Looks like it’s going to be wet drive too. Hopefully Ear Estonian won’t cause too much trouble going up the seaboard. O’Sharon, hope you get some breaks to take Buddy out in between raindrops. Goi g to be same issue here too. Beth, looks like decisions ahead, but fun ones as it relates to travels. Martha, glad you got the car fixed. Hopefully that will take care of things.

Guess I had better get myself moving here while it’s not raining and get up the road. Sooner I get the down payment on the roof project and sign the proposal etc., sooner he can get the ball rolling. Have a great day everyone and stay safe out there.

Sue, good thinking to have the entire roof replaced - especially now, before your cold snowy weather hits.

About seven years or so ago I lost a few shingles on the roof of my house due to a wind storm (yes, we have those too, here!). I had various roofing folks come out to do estimates (the difference between the low estimate - that was from a local, reputable, roofing company - and the high estimate - from my local Big Box store - was thousands of dollars!!!). I was told by the one I chose (the local, reputable guy - NOT the Big Box store) that they could repair my roof for several hundred, or replace the whole roof for several thousand.

At that time the roof was about fifteen years old (roofs in California's hot climate last about twenty years, often less), I was thinking of selling - but I figured that if I put the house up for sale, a new roof would be a bonus, if I didn't put the house up for sale a new roof would be a bonus. LOL. Hard choice!

So (like you) I went with replacing the whole roof. Although it pretty much wiped out my savings, I'm SO glad I did, because to replace my roof today (with the inflation we have been having) would cost at least twice what it cost seven years ago.

The cooler weather has been a blessing. I love to take longish walks with my Joe, but I just can't get out there when temps are around 90* (not to mention 112*!). Many nights in this past July it has been 90* at midnight. So even walking after the sun went down wasn't an option.

The Park Fire, which I mentioned in a few posts earlier, has calmed down quite a bit, but firefighters are still mopping up. This fire goes into the California record books as #4 all-time worst wildfire in the history of California (at least to date - if hot temps and high winds come, all bets are off, because it could get going again).

Here is a worrisome statistic: Nine of the all-time worst wildfires ever recorded in California history have all burned within the last seven years.

I know we aren't supposed to say the change-in-weather-patterns-term on here. . . so I won't. . . but statistics are statistics.

And statistics on California wildfires are downright scary.

Anne, one will always get a higher price from the Big Box stores. My neighbor who was manager of an exterior building supply company here, told me that the big box stores are a middleman between you and the person or persons they contract to do whatever it is you want done, roofing, Windows, kitchen remodel etc. So you are paying more because they take their cut out of the amount you pay to buy and have them arrange to have the work performed. Whereas a local contractor deals directly with you. With the exception of my kitchen counter tops and washer and dryer, which I bought through Lowes, everything else I have gotten done, has been through local businesses. But sometimes location determins if you have local businesses specializing in what you want or you have no choice but deal with big box. And sometimes big box has a good deal too.

Sue, good that the problem was found before winter. I think you made a good choice to tak3 care of it now. It was actually a good thing that the wind got a portion of my casita roof last summer and I replaced it all.

I don't know why Barbie isn't posting. I saw on Facebook that the closing happened yesterday. Hopefully she comes on here with details.

Good morning...barely. Nice and cool but they said not to get excited heat will hit this afternoon. We have a storm (so they say) coming in tomorrow that is supposed to bring wind, rain, and flooding in some areas. Heck I will believe it when I see it arrive. So much of our predicted weather either goes around us to the north or the south.
Just doing some laundry and some pick up the house. I have to go to the optometrist this afternoon to see where my eyes stand so I am anxious to get that over with. Then Tuesday to the retina doc for my injections. Hope things are still looking good as it has been 8 weeks per the protocol, it is usually 4 weeks, then after a few months goes to 8 I dunno, but it is working so whatever.

Barbie very excited for you to finally get those dang ducks all in a row. I saw your post on FB yesterday too but not my story to tell so just left it alone today. But glad to see you posted.
So are you still interested in the Tioga RV you went and looked at or are you still looking?
Sue glad you are getting your new roof before winter, especially your winters ha ha
Well I am off to fold the laundry....always something to do.

Sheila, maybe the person who came down the hill too fast had passed out for some reason or maybe had a heart attack? WHo knows? But I agree you are a hero dealing with your mother.

I am in Thunder Bay, Ontario, which is on the far western end of Lake Superior. A couple of tips for anyone visiting Canada for more than a couple of days. First, make sure you stock up on food and non-perishables as much as you can because they are more expensive here. Second, be sure that you have a 30 amp extension cord because almost all of the Canadian campgrounds I have been at have "buddy" or shared hookups, so depending on which site you are on, you might have a long distance to an electric box. Ditto for water hookups. I noticed this in an provincial park when I was in Ontario in June --had to back up my rig several times and park at a weird angle because the box was so far away--barely made it even with an extension cord!!

The one thing that does help the cost is that the Canadian dollar is only worth about 73 cents right now.

I hope Barbie closed OK. I know she was really nervous about closing and buying an RV. Hope we did not scare her too much, but all of us have had bad experiences, and we certainly don't want her to have one as well.

Judy, Barbie posted in the general room. And I read quite a bit about that runaway accident. The driver is thought to be at fault. Driving too fast then trying to slow down by laying on the brakes. Brakes were smoking. Passing 2 runaway lanes. Too many people don't know how to drive on straight aways, llet alone roads like that. But it could have been saved pulling into either runaway lane.

Still hotter than I like to walk, buy it's getting dark earlier and earlier so off we go.

Temp is only 79 here but no rain or wind in sight LOL those weather people, lots of hype over nothing right now. Who knows I might have to eat my words tonight we shall see.

Had a good eye exam and since my surgery I now have R eye 20/20 and left 20/25 WOW I was shocked. I knew I could see better but didnt know it was that good. Still getting glasses for the astigmatism and distance. Medicare pays for one set after cataract surgery and I am using my own frames because I like them and they fit well. Getting sunglasses and progressives. They have a 2yr warranty so I like that part I will order a couple more from Zenni as I like to leave a pair of sunglasses in the car and a pair of the progressives in the house by the computer and tv but will make sure this prescription is good before I order from them. . More expensive than Zenni.

Supposed to be cooler tomorrow 75 Might get something done outside. Picked up some dinner Terriyaki chicken, rice, and salad it was yummy

It looked like it could rain most of the day but never did. It only got up to 98. About the only thing I did was go get Inky's pills from the vet. I am suppose to give him two pills for 25 days, one pill for 25 days and then one pill every other day for 25 days. We'll see how good I am keeping up with that. I'm glad I learned to wrap his pill in some cat food or we would never have made it this far. I tried to use a pill pusher and couldn't catch him after a couple of days. He is turning into a real couch potato. He use to stay out all day but now likes sleeping on the bed most of the time.

Sheila, glad you have the nurses or aids coming to help you. They don't do a lot but any help is good. I had some coming when Harold was at home. I never really knew when they would show up if at all. My sister and I would take turns having our mother for a month at a time. I was working so Harold kind of had to watch her some. He was farming and training horses so was in and out all the time. She could get around ok but was very critical of my younger son. That's what he remembers about her because he was only about 10.

I need some new lenses in my glasses but I have my annual check up in November. I'm trying to hold off on getting new lesses in case my prescription changes. The lenses are very scratched.

I was aching to get a good walk in all day with my Joe, but by 8:30 p.m. it was still 92* outside even though it was almost dark. I can do 85* - 88* (especially if there is even a hint of a breeze) but over that is just too dang hot to walk for both of us.

It was only supposed to be the upper 80's today, but it topped out at 98*.

Tomorrow's high is supposed to be 87* - but I'll just have to wait and see about that.

Keeping fingers crossed.

I saw on Yahoo that Oroville Lake or is it a reservoir? was full for the 2nd year in a row... yea for you guys ... it warmed up a bit today mom actually opened the front door she can walk with her walker so when she thinks of it gets up and checks the locks on the door she didn't last night and I forgot too so the back door was locked but the front door wasn't oops I need to remember to do it... she is hitting the bottle again... over counter pain pills that is ;) this morning I saw that the bottle was moved then noticed it was on her side table awhile ago she came back to the living room with a pain pill on her walker O I looked over and the other one was still there so said they don't do you any good if you don't take it... so she grabbed it and took it and I grabbed the other one will need to put it back ... I actually feel slothful ... feel like I should do more but don't know what it should be... I've found that she will do less for herself the more someone does for her so try to let her do it... till it's apparent that she needs help... We will get through this... mom sure gave me a angry look tonight told her to wash her hands if she want's to set the table said she did I hadn't seen the signs of it so said to rewash oh my not happy at me...
given time... I realized that we haven't driven up through the park this summer might need to do that one day soon... there was a drive that I've wanted to take but don't want to go by myself with mom but my kids are busy oh speaking of my granddaughter just got engaged... so happy for her... sent me a picture of her ring (don't we just love cell phones??? wouldn't have been able to see the ring that soon before cell phones) it's very pretty... now I just need to figure out how to pronounce his name
worked on the hat but it's still measuring wrong or the size I'm going for so think I will go up a size at least and hope it will fit her sometime soon  it's suppose to measure 5.5 and it's just over 4 but all the instructions are the same to this point so it will be not starting over whew
my dd #4 found out today what was wrong with her car... tranny needs replaced Barbie that is too bad about your car hopefully you will get it back soon in that the bank will send through the money quickly glad all is done and take a big breath and make lists and check them off... lol we all have our way of doing things some times I do lists and they help other times I don't
not sure which works best for me...
we had french toast tonight tasted pretty good I had tossed some french bread in the freezer before I left so pulled it out today for the french toast went to cut it and saw a moldy spot cut it way could smell the mold saw some elsewhere so used sliced bread...
cleaned the dishwasher today went to take out the empty bottle of cleaner only to find out that it was still partially full so turned it back on think I will run it again to rinse it out hopefully that will take care of the odor ... if it doesn't it might mean a new dish washer
saw a hallmark mystery tonight that I've not seen called the Legion of the lost locket was pretty good....
hopefully your roof gets put on quickly Sue probably a good time to do it... I think I need to get the chimney for the pellet stove cleaned out
you all have a great day
