coronation and Derby Saturday.

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

coronation and Derby Saturday.

Postby Colliemom » Sat May 06, 2023 8:00 am

Morning. Was up early to watch the Coronation of King Charles III. First time I have seen a King crowned. I was only four years old when Elizabeth was crowned and I vaguely remember seeing some clips on TV, but that’s all. At that age p, who pays attention to things like that. P,us didn’t have the technology we have now. Very solemn and Interesting ceremony. British history going back thousands of years. May or may not be the first and only one I will ever see. Charles of course will not have a long reign due to his age, as compared to his mother. Was watching Prince George acting as a Page and thinking someday it will be hm in that role years down the line. Much celebration for the British people.

Meanwhile, here in the U.S, eyes will be on Church Hill Downs for all the hoopla and running of the Kentucky Derby. Busy Saturday, full of events

And closer to home here in Northern Michigan, it’s cloudy and 51°. Nothing exciting going on here today. Run the vac and mabe take a ride down to Military Surplus in Graylng. Looking for a rain hat to wear when I am out walking the dogs. Not looking for fashion, looking for practicality. I have a raincoat with hood, but I don’t like wearing hoods, because they are like blinders when you’re walking down the road. Can’t see to either side or out of the corner of your eyes to the back. I don’t really like to order that kind of stuff because you almost need to try them on. Hats come in all sizes, shapes and styles and some fit better than others as we know. Also plan to do painting in wood crafts. The bodies of the boy and girl have a whole mess of different outfits that you can make for them out of wood. . I have their farmers suits done, but I now am going to do the small accessories that go with them. I have the girls raincoat almost done, but I have not started the boys yet. By original plan was to have put them out last month with the rain coats on but that didn’t get off the ground, so now I’m debating if I wanted to forget the raincoats and go with the farmers outfits instead. I will post the pictures after I get them put out and then you can see what I am talking about.

Have a grea day!

Good morning. Cloudy day with showers today BUT starting Wednesday we are heating up. My plan is to get the rest of my stuff planted today while it is cool as I will be gone most of next weekend. The exciting news is I am getting my house painted next weekend. I almost did it last year but wasnt feeling up to it. So this is the year LOL I am painting it the same color with a bit darker trim for the windows and skirting. Apparently it is the year for me to be spending money LOL LOL new car, new house paint...yup I am done LOL Have to let the coffers build back up before anymore projects I have to hire out.

I was 5 during the last coronation. One thing I lost in the fire was a cup with the picture of the Queen and her coronation info. I was given it when I was 5 and had cherished it but alas the fire took it out. It was sent to me from England as my relatives were from Scotland and England.

I, too, was 5 when Elizabeth was crowned. I also have memories, but, as I heard Princess Royal, Anne, say, in an interview- at this many years later, one never knows if we are remembering seeing the actual event, or remembering photos, recorded video we saw through the years since. I am just a few weeks older than Charles. Probably the longest reigning monarch the world will experience, ever, because Charles and I are 74, heading to 75. William is already 40, where Elizabeth was only 25 years old. I'm not watching , might catch videos later. I preferred sleep over tv. I thnk continuity, such as the royal family exhibit, are so important. Throwing out history does not bode well for our own country.
Have a good day al

I also watched the coronation and listening to the Father/priest, was like hearing what our Mass is like every Sunday.

We tried growing tomatoes a couple years ago in large pots, as we can't have a garden in the ground. But the tomatoes cooked on the vines before they were ripe. So we use the Farmer's Market for our fresh veggies and fruit. But I sure do enjoy the conversations and pictures you share of your gardens.

We're having our patio enlarged and the landscapers are almost done. It will more than double the patio area and we are looking forward to getting furniture and using it. Monday we are leaving for a mini vacation on the gulf coast and will have a water front room. Needless to say, I am beyond excited.

Shirl, have you considered getting a chicken or two for your deck?

I tried growing tomatoes here and the regular tomatoes didn't do well, but the cherry tomatoes did great! My strawberry plant is done for. :(
One year, back in MN, I grew about 4 regular tomato plants, and they had a bunch of just ready-to-pick ripe tomatoes on them. Then we had a bad thunderstorm hit with big hail and it just turned my tomatoes into puree, and destroyed the plants. I was SO sad! Should have picked them the day before, but who knew?

Yesterday was a bad day for me. Had several very frustrating things happen and I finally just had a melt down. Must have taken a lot out of me because I slept without moving an inch all night until 10:30 this morning! Need to regroup today and get back on track. I do have a headache tho.

Getting a little warmer out again but still cool at night enough to leave the windows open. Was very windy yesterday but much calmer today.

Will watch the race later on. Maybe watch golf before that. Just keep it a calm day today. A self-care day.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Sorry to hear about the melt-down, Barbie.

I have certainly "been there", so I definitely know what you are talking about!

I hope tomorrow is a better day.

Hang in there, girl!

Chuckled at the chicken suggestion, Barbie. I would guess we all have meltdowns from time to time. If I were alone, I'd be having one but trying to keep it together. My granddaughter's fiancé announced on FB that he married my granddaughter today! I had no idea! I'm sure they are unaware this was the 45th anniversary of my mother's death. From doing a little research, they were married in Minnesota where they live now. When I told my grandson Thursday I had arrived, he told me he would be busy the next few days! I heard nothing back from my local granddaughter.

So, the White Coat ceremony I attended for my aunt's granddaughter yesterday means even more. The white coat is the symbol of moving from 3 years of veterinary study to the 4th year of hands on. Kyndall has dreamed of this for a long time, and I was so happy to be there. She's going to be a large animal vet.

I'm still behind on reading everything here. Sheila, nice you had a getaway. Some of you gardeners are already playing in the dirt. :) No real interest in the Coronation but thought aunt would enjoy it this evening. Program was preempted by Texas shooting instead. I was 6 when Elizabeth was crowned. I have a Coronation doll - think it came with grocery purchase or some such. Sorry about the cup, Karen. :( Weather is in the 90s here. We went to the County Museum today for a little genealogy research and to see the murals in the town where I was born.

My dad grew 8' high tomato plants in Michigan! One thing he did, and I also did, was to plant them deep. Tomatoes are one of the few plants that will grow roots on their stems, so stick at least 6" of the plant or up to half of its height underground. They will look short for a while but will grow those extra roots and get much bigger in the long run. Planting tomatoes deep also helps if you live in a dry climate. My dad also watered his plants every single day all summer. We had sandy soil, so it did not get soggy, but he and my mother canned a lot of quarts of tomatoes from only maybe 6 plants. And they gave a lot of tomatoes away to neighbors and relatives as well.

Well, my story for today is that I got up ready to go to the post office to pick up some mail. Except then i realized that it was Saturday instead of Friday and the local post office is closed on weekends. Oops. So I will have to wait until Monday. Then I am driving 25 miles to the nearest town that has a real grocery store and a hardware store. Abiquiu has only a gas station and convenience store, and I have not bought any groceries in 12 days. Need to stock up because I leave here on Wednesday morning and no really big grocery stores until May 19. I don't want to pay higher prices, and the town I will be heading to on Monday has a Walmart Superstore. Will be in a commercial campground on May 17 that has a laundromat, so very happy for that, as I am having to wash things out in the sink and hang them up to drive. I probably should look for a laundromat in that town, also.

Watched part of the coronation, but I agree with some of the news articles that parts of it seem kind of silly. I did enjoy seeing Westminster Abbey, however. Last time i was there, they had a display on the second floor, so I got to go up there and see the underside of the roof! They had some roof tours last summer and fall, but they sold out in a matter of hours. Can you imagine walking around on the roof of the Abbey??

I did set the alarm and sorta woke up decided to call my dd talked for a bit and then go a text that brother and mom were on their way so decided to run out and do some stuff and then come back and read scriptures... as I was getting stuff out of the back of the car I saw a truck turn onto the street thought that is brother.. by time I lowered the doors they were on the driveway... hurried up and unlocked the front door put stuff away showed brother something that I was finding concerning didn't think the toilet was leaking but also the base of the toilet was looking gummy so asked if it needed to be removed and resealed he took some cleaner to it and cleaned it up it's on the floor I don't get down on the floor anymore... looks a lot better...
worked on my Swedish weave and did my two rows on the crocheted afghan fixed french dips for supper...
yes it was quite but I'm also one that always in my own home have either the radio or tv running for the noise not so much the entertainment so the quite was really quite... her radio doesn't work but I then remembered Pandora yea...
Barbi hugs... we sometimes just have to let go
Irmi have you tried growing your garden in the winter? in the SW it always seemed weird to me because the fairs would be on in the spring where ours is in the late summer
Enjoy your time there Anita it's always nice to get to go the the milestones of family life
my occasion on Thurs was to be with my grandson for his first trip to the temple... a milestone in his life ... his sister is getting her white coat late summer it surprised me as it will be in Boise although she is going to school in Pocatello (towns in Idaho) I don't know if she will be allowed to invite anyone or if she will think of me... hopefully she will and hopefully I can work things out... I really want to make a trip to Iowa some time this summer perhaps in the harvest season... love the fruits...
had sad news from my friend/sister more a sister than a friend she has had health issues for so long and they don't seem to get better... she has asthma heart issues allergies to latex and now has been diagnosed with ED and from her research generally after being diagnosed with it... about a 2-3 year expectancy I will hope that her research is off a bit...
I am still pretty bummed about it...
you all have a great day

Anita I'm so sorry about your experience with your grandchildren. I would treat them 'appropriately' if you have been in the habit of sending them gifts! Congratulations to the new vet! I'm sure she knows the demand especially for large animal vets. In fact i know of a practice in this area that has been looking for one for several years! The vet crises is real and the highest majority of those enrolled in vet schools are women. Which while is good, most don't want to be large animal vets.

Anita, I greatly admire anyone - especially a woman - who chooses and trains to become a large animal veterinarian. Having kept large animals for many years - cattle, horses, goats, sheep - I know how very dangerous even the most kind and calm large animal can be.

For example, if a calm and gentle horse merely - and accidentally - steps on one's foot (without at all meaning to) a serious injury can result to the horse's handler.

Accidents involving more fractious or less gentle large animals. . . take your imagination from there.

Anita, I salute your granddaughter!

One of my favorite YouTube channels, "Working Horses With Jim" has to do with a gentleman who farms and does logging with his draft horses (which each weigh around 1800 pounds) somewhere in a rural part of New York state.

https://www.youtube.com/@WorkingHorsesWithJim

Here is a video of him using his horses to pull a UPS truck (which was stuck!) out of the snow!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjqLmS9WMvA

From time to time, he has his neighbor (a woman who is a veterinarian) over to tend his horses. She looks to only be about 20-something. (!)

She looks positively tiny next to Jim's horses!
