So Cal Snow!

Yesterday we had a fairly heavy blizzard-like snowstorm here at the edge of the desert area southwest. I have lived here for 13 years and 17 years before that just 30 miles north of here. Never remember snow! We have had off and on rain now for a few days - heavy at times - just like Barbie reported, but actual flat flake heavy snow blowing sidewise was certainly a novelty for us. It snowed for about 1/2 hour, but because the ground was so wet it melted as fast as it landed. Everyone was out taking pictures and videos. The t.v. news was reporting that it was a frozen icy-rain out LA way, but I lived in New England so I know what snow looks like! Don't miss it!

Barbie lives further out in the desert from me - on the other side of the mountain. Did you see any snow, Barbie?

We have had quite a cold winter in California. There have been other years when I was able to swim now and then during the winter months. Not this year! Whole country seems to be getting weird weather this year.

Snow here in Tucson this morning after the winds yesterday. Woke up to about 3" of the white stuff on the park models, vehicles and RVs, but at least the roads were just wet. Didn't hear anything about accidents on the news this a.m., so that's a good thing. I think even Punkin was confused with the white stuff. My Wisconsin neighbor made 3 little snowmen. At least it will melt fast, and 70s expected all next week. Finally!

Just hanging around again. working on routes and reservations in Nevada. Not a lot there I guess , but I am going to make the trek towards Great Basin NP to get that off my list before heading towards Reno. Longer drives than I usually like to do, but with nothing in between...

And we're supposed to hit 97 today with winds picking up this afternoon and evening launching us into critical fire weather conditions. Luckily tonight it cools off as we'll drop 40 plus degrees and then 80's tomorrow. I'm glad my AC works. Ty asks to go for walks and then turns around quickly in this heat.

Tonight we're having tacos. So no cooking here.

Storm prep is on in our region, again! They barely have I-80 back open, and are now ramping up for more closures and the snow mobile search and rescue teams, with rain here, but heavy snow starting early Saturday in mountains just 40 or so miles up into foothills from here! We have already met our annual rainfall total for year, so every drop more is bonus. Now, with huge amounts of snow up there, it all depends on temps staying cooler longer, to avoid sudden melt and floods. Starting Saturday, we expect rain with brief Wednesday respite for 7 days! We stocked up and planned menus with plan to stay in, except my trip to Chrysler Saturday to get lock mechanism on rear passenger door of my PT replaced under warranty! Now I gotta fight insurance battle. For some reason sons claims are being rejected saying he has no back up to Medicare, which simply isn't true. I fought this in January, and Anthem said yes he has insurance, we will fix it, yet here I am! I despise being on hold!

Hi ladies!

Sorry I've been missing but between being up to my elbows in food for the last week, preparing for our anniversary celebration in the clubhouse, with family, friends from church and a few close other friends. I didn't have much time to spare. I did say rabbits yesterday morning and we left here in a very thick, soupy fog, to meet my sister & bil at Fort Wilderness as they wanted to take us to Epcot. After we arrived there, we went first by bus, then 2 boats and a monorail ride, to get there. We went to Germany for a beer, Italy for lunch and France for dessert. Surprisingly there were no waiting lines (one of my worst pet peeves) and the crowds didn't really start showing up until we were leaving around dinner time. The 17 mile trip to our hotel was in horrendous traffic and it took us an hour to get there. But I'm so glad we made the trip and that we were able to spend some time with family.

I've met Soos at many gtg's and everything that was said was correct. I miss her. Anita, I'm glad most of your cruise was good. There are some people that just can't live without drama in their lives (another pet peeve of mine).

The weather is crazy everywhere and we're close to 90 here, so I'm not complaining.

Snow!
We had some snow flakes - yes, real flakes here yesterday. Lasted less than a minute, but I have to admit it was very cool.

My son & his family drove up to their place at Lake Arrowhead last Thursday, thinking they'd just be up there for the weekend to play in the snow. HA! The snow was too deep (over 5') & it has been way too cold for them to be outside. While some of the streets have been plowed now, they have a very steep driveway so he wants to make sure they can get their SUV down safely before heading out. He thinks they might try tomorrow. They both have their laptops so they can work remotely. I'm just super glad I didn't go up with them. I'd be going nuts by now.

I got my shingles shot as soon as they left on Thursday. I didn't have much of a reaction at all. I had shingles last year- went to urgent care & got med which helped keep it mild & not last as long but while it wasn't a terrible case, I don't want to do that again if the vaccine can help. Hope the second shot is as easy of the first.

Anita, I hope you get the other apartment - does't sound like your current complex is handling things very well. And sorry about the cruise. I loved the one I went on with my DS, DIL & Olivia (she was not quite 3) years ago. It was amazing. We booked most of our excursions on our own which were less stressful than the 2 we went on which were sponsored by the ship. I want to try it again sometime.

It is still very windy again today. The weather man says it was another record high in Lafayette. The high here was 84. The storms are still in Texas and should get here between 12:00 and 4:00 in the morning. I don't like night storms. We could have gusts between 45 and 60 mph. I think I'll go put the truck on the carport in case it decides to hail. I should have tried to mow more of the yard before it rains again but I got the mower stuck in the mud the other day. I pulled it out with the truck and I'm probably lucky I didn't get the truck stuck. I put out a bag of ant poison while I was mowing. Hope it keeps them from coming in the house again. I haven't seen one in a month or more.

I went to Walmart and picked up Sugar's pills and a bunch of other stuff. I saw a recipe for Quiche so got the ingredients to make it. I haven't made one in a long time. I always order Quiche if I'm in a restaurant that has it. One of my yellow roses died so I stopped at Lowe's to look at roses. I didn't like the looks of the roses at Lowe's or Walmart. I should have stopped at the nursery in Lafayette yesterday but roses weren't on my list.

Good evening. Kind of a boring day here today. I didnt do much. Made a cheesy chicken and rice casserole. I am a very big fan of casseroles. Can just dish it up, reheat and bam dinner or lunch. Martha quiche is one of my favorite and easy things to make. I make different kinds often. Henry cleaned the kitchen and breakfast room this morning so I took that opportunity to swiffer the floor. I was going to run a couple of errands this morning but my motivation was lacking so I didnt ha ha So kind of been a couch potato today. No problem tho, there is always tomorrow. I am eager to get out and work in the yard but this isnt the time of year yet. And it has been way too cold but when it warms up I have some clean up to finish in my yard. The weather this year is definitely crazy. Mother nature is being very bipolar for sure.

I'd say I was lazy but I finally received the corrected 1099 from my job this past summer so I did my federal taxes and have it set to automatically pay them the middle of this month. I'd like to have picked the middle of next month which I could have done but was leery of anything going wrong and having them charge me more! It ended up being almost exactly what I saved for them so that's good. But my bank account looks so much better with that money in it. Haha

We ended up with way more taco shells than needed so I brought 2 boxes home. I've discovered there are lots of things I can eat out of taco shells so they'll get used. I don't know where they got a few big boxes of avocados, but they begged me to take a box. No, but I took 6. I couldn't see me using more without them going bad.

Karen, I love casseroles and stew type concoctions. You never know exactly what I'll put into either but they are home cooked and I always enjoy whatever I pull out of the freezer. (I do admit some haven't been as successful as others but all have been edible.) I won't be near a big grocery for my April - June volunteer position so I'm thinking of eating anything in my freezer and cooking up a new quantity to fill it again before getting there. Here, I admit I've been cheating and eating more of the HEB cooked entrees. Since I usually get two meals out of each, and they are usually things I don't cook, it's a good deal. And spoils me. If I couldn't split their single meals into 2 almost every time, it'd cost more than I'd want to spend. Instead it's a good deal.

I saw on the weather video's that roads were closed in Northern Arizona or if not closed delayed what a mess it looked like...

Anita I hope that you can get the other apartment it does sound like this one is a wash.... one would expect better in new apartments...
made hamburger tonight with steak fries and a relish tray I found out that mom really likes celery stuffed with peanut butter I'm sure cheese as well I will need to remember and not put it on the relish tray just so she will eat... eat the celery better than the burger maybe 3 bites... I can make them and put the in the fridge for her grazing during the night
I saw a cinnamon roll in a mug recipe shared it on FB will have to try it first before I put it here
oh yes I'd read someone put Brie cheese on hamburger's so decided to try it found a wedge of it on sale now I have a bit left over I've never really used Brie how is is used??

The snow out here has been crazy! Palm Springs is right at the base of the big mountain range to the west and they had some snow flurries there the other day. Other areas got hail (like the freeway I was on earlier that day). We just got a nice soaking rain. Wildflowers will be blooming all over soon!

The areas up in the mountains north of LA got the really heavy snows. That is where Catherine's son and family are stuck. Several houses up there have burned down due to gas meters being so buried under the snow. The fire departments have to take snow cats loaded with fire hoses up to those fires since the roads aren't passable and then have to dig down thru the snow to find the fire hydrants! Other people have run out of food and some good samaritans have hiked thru the heavy snow to homes taking bags of food to them. The Nat'l guard is finally heading up there with more plows to get the roads cleared so people can get out. Several homes and businesses have had their roofs collapse under the weight of the snow too. What a mess! I can't even remember anything like that happening in MN.

We are supposed to get back to the 70's next week I think. This weather hasn't been very conducive to people looking to buy a house right now, so no activity here lately.

Beth, I saw photos of Benson, AZ where your place is, with several inches of snow as well! Maybe this cool winter will be followed by a cooler summer! We can only hope!

Barbara, here to the north, when those type fires occur, it's usually due to snow load on propane tanks. I'm surprised way up in southern mountain snow country they have natural gas lines? We have had same situation here with people trapped and rescues happening along with food deliveries. The majority of full time residents are well prepared, but this amount of snow is testing even well prepared people. Add to that avalanche risk here in some areas. A apartment complex had to be evacuated due to an avalanche plowing through floor one and two. One building is unusable. PG&E is providing certain folks with motel vouchers because they can't get crews in to restore power. And next round begins by this hour tomorrow, with 4-6 feet of snow in some araa over next 7 days.

Lake Oroville/Oroville Dam (I am downstream of Lake Oroville) has been rising about a foot a day, even when it hasn't been raining. There is a truly massive amount of snow in the Oroville watershed, just waiting to melt, with still more snow on the way.

The water level at Oroville Dam has risen about 120 (!) feet since January 1. That is a whole heck of a lot of water coming in.

I hope that we get a more gradual warming trend this year as spring arrives, instead of our usual seasonal change of "freeze your buns" to "bake your brains", which usually happens over a period of only a week or so.

Today is March 3, with snow in the forecast for the Oroville watershed. It is not at all unusual here to hit our first 100-degree day on or about April 1.

I'm sure that the California Department of Water Resources is paying attention - but it is still a bit of a nail-biter.
