Morning all. Bit of light snow and 30° out this morning. Not going to amount to much here. But mid to late next week looks like Winter is coming full blast with snow and cold. That’s OK as we need it. That stuff is white gold for this area and a lot of northern Michigam and the U.P.. It brings up the winter sports people and puts money into the businesses and the paychecks and pays the bills and puts food on the table for people.

Wow Pat, you sure got clobbered. Guess Diaz saved it all for last. One thing I have been wondering is, what happens to the livestock in this kind of weather. Are they just out there on their own? Shirl, are you soaked yet? Martha, how is your son doing? Lyn, anew fur baby, how wonderful. Congrats.

My new computer arrived yesterday but I haven’t monkeyed with it yet. That was fast, bit over 24 hours from initial order. Way faster than Amazon would have. I was doing some snooping this morning and found that the price had been dropped since I ordered on Wednesday, so contacted Best Buy. They checked my original order and did a price match and are refunding me a bit over $31 Not a lot of green, but hey, any green you can save is money in the pocket, right!

Going to take a trip up to town this morning as I need a couple things from the store and since it’s going to be a snowy day tomorrow, not to mention busier cause it’s the weekend, I thought I would do it today. Otherwise nothing much going on around here. I have my old craft projects done to the point where I can put the exterior paint on the backside and then vanish and assemble. Will send a picture when I get them done. They are supposedly supposed to go out at the sub entrance after the holidays but that’s going to depend upon what mother nature decides. I may wind up using them in front of my garage instead. Making a back up plan just in case.

So I guess I had better get myself dressed and mosey up to town. It will definitely be mosey because I’m sure that the roads are a little slick. Although by now I am sure that the county has them plowed and sanded. Have a nice day everyone.

Morning Sue and All, it’s 46° and sunny. We did get a good soaking but not the snow. I watch Little Mountain Ranch on YouTube. They were preparing for 35° below and their cows stayed out with heated water tanks and feed with hay. They also had their own snow plow. Like you Sue with your generator. Think neighbors look out for each other in farm country. I guess very cold ares prepare for severe weather. I would hope not a lot of 18” snowfall. Pat, stay safe and warm. No special plans for the day. Do need to load trash bag in grocery cart and roll out to dumpster. My exercise for the day. Will wait until mail delivery. Don’t want to make two trips and overdue the exercises. Lol. Be safe

Good morning Sue and Shirl. We were the same temp as you this morning Sue, with frost on the ground. BUT no snow in sight. Will warm up to 43 ha ha Wont be working outside today. I have plenty of stuff to do inside anyway. No store runs today, I need to fix what I have. Took out a bit of pot roast to cook tomorrow. I buy a medium sized roast, cut it in thirds, freeze it. So got a small one for tomorrow that will last 2 days of meals.

Going to work in my office today, it is in disarray LOL Will hook up my shredder and get busy. Filing and shredding I lead such an exciting life. I am getting ready to get a new phone but dang they are expensive. I dont need the latest and greatest but need a quality phone since I dont have a landline. We shall see if there are any deals on for Christmas.

Just had some breakfast so time to get busy. Might have to make a run to the Donation center later today or tomorrow. Take some clothes and some Christmas ornaments that I no longer use. A few have a sentimental attachment but time to let that go since I dont even see them all year long and really nowhere to put them inside now anyway.

Hi Sue. Good question!

In my previous life, I had a few head of cattle and horses when I lived in the Sierra foothills. Although it usually didn't get terribly cold there in the winter (I think the coldest temp I remember was about 15 or 16 degrees for a few days) it did snow once in a while. Cattle and horses will grow long winter coats, and will shed these coats in the spring (then grow them again when the weather turns cold).

I did have a barn for them (with a door that was always open), but they would usually choose to be outside, even when it was snowing.

I have a couple of favorite YouTube channels that I watch (new videos are posted a couple of times a week) that have to do with cattle. One is "Our Wyoming Life", the other is "Saskdutch Kid". The former is about the daily life of a rancher in Wyoming, the latter is about a dairy farmer in Saskatchewan, Canada. Both keep cattle outside in the winter; pretty cold sometimes in North-east Wyoming and Canada (think 40 below) their cows seem to do just fine, so long as they have plenty of food and water.

The Wyoming rancher has black Angus cattle, it may look like the cows are suffering when one sees their black coats covered thick with white snow.

But don't be fooled. The snow on the cows is not melting, this means that the thick winter coat of the cows is keeping them well insulated from the cold, otherwise the snow on them would melt.

I highly recommend both of these YouTube channels. Over the years, not having access to television network programming because I don't have cable or satellite, I find I have come to MUCH prefer these kinds of "reality" (and they are real!) YouTube channels over the usual scripted network tv shows which are filled these days with endless commercials, car chases, sex and violence.

Just want to say how appreciated I am with the TV Roku talk. I have Roku on my TV. I also have Utube , which is not working right now because of the problems of last week. My daughter will come over tomorrow and fix it. Question: I like thr channels on Utube. I am paying $70/month for Utube. Does Utube go through Roku? Do I have to keep Utube, or may I cancel it?

Lynn, I stumble thru the tech world. I watch Garden Answer every morning. To the right of her site is a list of YouTube sites. I scroll down looking for anything that interest me. They are free and I do not pay for YouTube. I have Roku but stumble thru that too so no help for you. Amazon Prime is a favorite. I only stream and I don’t watch a lot of tv.

Cloudy and 25 degrees. Pat, at least here we don't get that wind although there are gusts on the mountain passes. We get fatal accidents and avalanche shutdowns. Our upcoming snow forecast keeps changing.

All the TV talk makes me think I need to do some research. I bought a ROKU tv for this room and just checked all the channels it gets for free. What I really like are the iHeart Radio ones! Had no idea. Karen, I fumble through YouTube TV so maybe I need to watch a 'how to' video! I still have the kids' Netflix and I have Frndly for Hallmark, UP tv, etc. I gave up Prime because I have time to wait for packages to arrive.

Redwahine (Chris and Al) came to town yesterday and we had a long, late lunch. By the time we drove back through town, the lights were on. It was great to catch up! Their hotel is just down the street across from the shuttle, but I didn't realize the shuttle doesn't run that often so Chris decided to drive. People parking wrong in the large parking lot we tried and blocking it, no parking spots on the street so we went to a restaurant with parking! Nothing like living in a tourist town!

I think this will be a genealogy day.

When it comes to cattle in the winter...the cattle may take well to the temperatures and the snow but my thoughts go out to the rancher's that have to be sure that they have access to unfrozen water and plenty to eat...... Having worked at a riding stable in my youthful former life as a teenager, no matter the temperatures or depth of the snow, we made it out to the barns to feed, dump the ice from the water buckets and refill them and for most of the horses make the walk up to the spring house with them for fresh water. Back in the 60's in old barns there were no fancy water supplies in the barns and or stalls.

Jane wants to announce that she went to the vet today and they counted those now wiggly things in her tummy that make her belly move while she sleeps. She has two puppy buns in her tummy. I reminded her she could concentrate on quality over quantity.

Lyn, first of all there is a difference between Youtube and YoutubeTV. I also pay for YoutubeTV $64.99 I need to be able to get the local channels AND record the shows I like on the major networks. Youtube TV has unlimited DVR so I like that part very much. My Roku tv lists all the apps I have loaded. Some I watch some I dont. freeveetv.com ( google it) was on the internet today saying they just added a bunch of channels but I havent had time to check it out yet. It is part of Amazon but it is free. Has it's own app. Right now it has the whole 14seasons (LOL) of Heartland. I havent finished that series yet. I want to watch Lady Chatterlys lover, it has some live tv shows, and movies, has classics, documentaries, something for everyone, you need to check it out. You can add it from your Roku..such scroll down on the home screen to "streaming channels" or whatever yours says. Then put it in the search and it will come up.

I LOVE this guy he explains everything so well. Michael Saves can help you with anything on Youtube. That is how I learned to set mine up and customize to my liking.

The Scots for hundreds of years have bred cattle that are short and stocky, but have very long hair to keep them warm, and mostly they keep it all year long. Here is one I met on a narrow road on the Isle of Skye in June:


Cows are pretty hardy, but most people who have horses are more likely to put them in a barn during really cold weather, although some develop thick coats and do fine unless it is super cold.

I am staying one night in the town of Tehachapi tonight at 4,000', but it is very cold here tonight and expected to freeze. I have filled my tanks and left my hose to drain, so will be fine. I think I will skip dumping the tank tomorrow morning and just head south to where it will be a trifle warmer, although all of California is cold right now. I called the German bakery in town and ordered some almond croissants I will pick up tomorrow morning on my way out of town. I also stopped and picked up a few things at Walmart, so my freezer is back to being stuffed. I'll be at Hensley Lake for four days and then Napa for three days before visiting my DIL's relatives on the eastern side of the Valley, and I did not want to do my grocery shopping in expensive Napa. EVERYTHING is more expensive there!

I keep thinking it will start getting warmer in a few weeks, and most importantly, the sun will start to set later in just a few days. Very short days makes it really hard to get to a camp site before dark.

I am feeling much better today and really wish I had some of that chili now!

Romeow decided to go bonkers at 3:30 in the morning. Even after getting squirted with the water bottle several times, he kept it up off and on for several hours, keeping me awake most of that time until I had to get up for work! I wish I could find his "OFF" button!!

The owner came into the shop today and gave us each a Christmas card with $60 in it. We each also got a $50 Visa gift card for selling so many $10.99 prepaid cards this month. So that all helps a lot.

I got hit on today by a much older guy. He told me he dreamed about me last night. I just laughed and changed the subject Then when I was checking him out, he invited me out for a glass of wine after work. I politely turned him down. Older men just give me the creeps sometimes! They are so tacky and say some very uncomfortable and inappropriate things.

Gonna just watch one show tonight and get to bed early. I can sleep in some tomorrow since I don't work until 11. Hopefully, Romeow will let me sleep thru most of the night tonight!

I remember a huge snowstorm years ago that went thru Colorado and Nebraska dumping several feet of snow and stranding tens of thousands of cows out in the plains. Many of them died from being buried in snow drifts or freezing from subzero temps in blizzard conditions.

My car has a transmission problem. I backed out of my parking space at Walmart and went to put the car in drive and big thump. Then an emergency screen came up saying transmission fault, needs service immediately. I drove into another space and called the local Ford dealer. It's a couple weeks before they can schedule a service. Long talk with the service tech there and we determined the car is drivable but to not drive unless absolutely necessary and if certain things happened on my way back to the park, to pull over and call him back and they'd come get the car and me. I made it back. He wants me to show up without an appt on Monday or Tuesday and he promises they'll do a diagnostic. The car will probably remain there. He says they'll drive me back to the RV park. I talked to the manager here and he confirmed the code and thunk and also said to call them before I head to Ford and then call them after I know anything. And that if necessary they'll come get me. People here are super. I'm hoping it won't be a ridiculously high fix but, it is what it is. I was on my way to another store but didn't do that so I skipped a pot luck tonight because I didn't get what I needed for what I intended to take.

Glad you're feeling better Barbie. Tina, I love you telling Jane that quality over quantity. Thing is I also believe she understands.

Weather here will be a drastic change tomorrow. Almost 80 today and only low to mid 50's tomorrow with rain. I'll take it over what do many others are getting. The low tonight, upper 40's, is close to tomorrow's high. Back to mid 60's the next day.

Anita, one of these days I'll probably drop Prime, also. So far I make out financially with it but when I'm not any more, bye bye lol

it was a totally lay in bed till I had to get up to fix supper... even took a nap... we will blame it on my dear friend/sister .... are are friends but claim to be sister's she just published another book and I got it I've had the manuscript on my computer but had read it... one I don't allow time on the computer to read books and 2 I just never thought about it... she has written several books and thought that due to health part of it being a memory problem she wouldn't write any more but she had this idea and did it.. I'm really glad until I look at the clock and its 3:45 but most of the reason I stuck to the bed was I have this cold and just didn't want to get up..
so didn't work on my wreath or afghan or anything else that perhaps I should have done...
I grew up on a ranch in a area that it would get way cold in the negative for long periods of time... I remember day pulling a wagon or sleigh out to feed the cattle but don't remember any coddling other than when the babies started coming and it wasn't unusual to hear I need you kids up and it was time to rub the babies so they would get warm then back to mom..
we need the snow and or rain all over I watched a news thing on yahoo talking about the Great Salt Lake and how low it's getting drastically low.... to the point where it is scary
today I don't know if we made it to the teens it's just way cold out...
tomorrow I really need to go and get a few things...milk being the most important thing

someone mentioned what car tranny's cost and it was thousand or so and I thought that all??? for your sake I hope its a simple adjustment..

You really need to hope that you don't need a new transmission. I just got to pick up my Chrysler Town and Country minivan from the shop.(Best vehicle for long non camping drives and local dog shows.) Between supply chain issues delaying even getting the replacement transmission and the shop actively hiring for more skilled mechanics, it took them over 4 months. I did tell them that we both realised I had other transportation available while I waited. Gas prices being what they were, driving the 12 year old Honda Fit saved me gas money but not enough to make up for the cost of a transmission. I could have traveled to Italy or Spain with that money. So the saving account has been depleted for now. I felt lucky though that in all the years I have had cars, many of which I have driven forever, I had never had a transmission go bad before. Perhaps it was my turn.....

Lyn, I have the free version of YouTube, with more programming than I can possibly watch for. . . free. Love it.

Also, I don't know how you have your Roku vs. YouTube set up. Do you have YouTube as a stand-alone app (unrelated to your Roku programming) on your smart tv?

If yes (that YouTube is stand-alone) you can add the YouTube "channel" to your Roku programming - this puts your access to YouTube within Roku (kind of hard to explain) and you will then see YouTube on your Roku channel menu.

I have YouTube set up as one of my Roku "channels", I have never had a problem accessing YouTube via Roku.
