Saturday - Moon Landing Anniversary

This day is so special. For me, it’s just about impossible to think back about a certain day in the past and recall what I was doing. Usually, that’s only possible when I remember the days my children were born. But today it’s possible too. I’m sure that’s true for so many people. Fifty years ago the US landed on the moon. My dad was a career NASA employee. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in aeronautical engineering and immediately went to work for NACA, the precursor to NASA. He was there from the early days of testing different configurations of future airplanes in wind tunnels to being involved with others in coming up with the design that became the shape of the space shuttle called a “lifting body.” It was not unusual for my family to be up at 3:00 am to watch first Sputnik and then subsequent satellites or flight missions pass over our house through the night sky.

Today, I remember that day in 1969. Growing up, we had 4 acres that had lots of fruit, nut and citrus trees. Apricots were at their full sweetness on July 20. Every year, I would make a bunch of open-face apricot pies to be frozen and enjoyed later by the family over the course of the next year. That day as I had the TV on watching the moon landing, I made 29 pies - 24 full sized and 5 pot pie sized. I know I would remember that day regardless, but it also makes it really easy to remember those delicious pies.

For his contributions to the space program, my father was presented with a flag that traveled to the moon in December 1972 on the last Apollo mission. I have that flag along with its presentation letter hanging in my office. Whenever I look at it it’s hard to imagine that at one time it was physically on the moon. I wish my dad could be here to remember and celebrate this special day.

Good morning all. I also remember that day. It was a few days until I would be getting married.
Remember walking down the hall in the building where my apartment was and we could hear
everyone's TVs blaring the moon landing. Exciting. Saw a couple of the astronauts on TV
yesterday. Where did all those 50 years go.

Hello all!

I was 8 years old then and my mom made me come in from playing to watch it saying I’d be grateful later, she was right.

Growing up on Air Force Bases in the 60’s it was all about the space race, very cool time to be alive.

I too remember that day well. It was so exciting. As I just toured the Huntsville Space Center with Sarah, this is all fresh in my mind. Sandi, your Dad is probably glowing in Heaven right now! What a thrill for you to have that flag!
Comic Con continues....saw a man in a complete Spider Man outfit, driving around in a bright red SlingShot with lights and music!!! I stand around with a big grin on my face ehjoying all the activity.
Judi, that home in Georgia sounds perfect for my whole family! When one of us wins the lottery!

A friend brought a dog she is fostering to a pet adoption event at the pet store in Abbeville so I went and had lunch with her. You all know that a pet adoption is not some where I should be hanging around. I wonder if I brought a kennel and a cat they would let me join in?

Judy, your uncle's house would be good for a bed and breakfast but I'm sure they wouldn't let anyone do that in a gated community.

If I had a Shoe Station coupon I might have gone to look for a pair of shoes to replace the ones I threw away. They didn't deliver my paper yesterday or today so no coupon. I will have to ask if I can use one I print off the computer. I brought the bag of clothes I want to donate but of course forgot to go by there. I will have to put it in the front seat so I can see it.

It's another 94 degree day so I won't get much done today. We are suppose to have some days in the 80's next week but with rain.

I was only 8 years old when that took place so I don't remember much about it. I am sure we talked about it in school.

I didn't pick Lola up until almost 11pm last night! That vet really over-books himself but he is very good. He gave me some more pred and flagyl for her and said she needs to stay on that indefinitely, especially the pred. He says she has IBD. He also thinks she will need subQ fluids once a week. I told him I have done that myself before and he said he could give me the bags, etc to do it myself which will be much cheaper.

Lola is still not totally up to snuff this morning.

I was in Galesburg Ill... able to watch it on a friends tv... yes something one remembers for ever...
we had a family day or most of the family... dd and her family and myself went to Green Canyon Swimming pool it's between here and Rexburg has hot water (natural) the big pool is cooled down and then there is a smaller pool for soaking in and is really hot and then a even smaller spot that is really cold... the hot pool really tires one out... then some of us went to Rexburg to wal mart and grocery shopping and other's went home then we went to the last night of the play so a busy day ... my other dd went to have her eyebrows waxed and then to her son's house for baby time
am tired stayed in that pool too long
