Gmorning all

Fourth of July celebrations all throughout my neighborhood including my nextdoor neighbors again. Saw what I could through my window from my bed, but was tending to Munch, my visitor, & Piper who has become fearful of the big booms:( But all is well this morning, we had our walk, then I picked up the biggest parts--tubes that still had gun powder in them, chunks of unexploded gun powder, & the plastic parts--from my yard, & like any good neighbor, I returned them to their rightful owner by tossing them over my fence Hm, sounds a bit "catty," but he's never been a good neighbor despite all my efforts to be neighborly:( Just wish there would be some kind of enforcement of the fireworks laws--these the "illegal fireworks," but small town & not enough cops...

Anita, good do on the portable generator! I've been without my "built in" genny for 3 yrs, & if I ever figure out where to carry a portable, that'll be my choice. Then I need to see about replacing HarBor's ac, since it died this past winter. May get away for a 3-4 day trip later this month, only 3 1/2 hrs from here, & hopefully weather will be much cooler. Today is the LAST day of our heat wave!

We had fireworks going off 360 degrees around us. Beach condo associations had them up and down the beach, the city had them on the river, and neighbors had small one going... it was so over the top I just put in ear plugs and went to bed. Quiet this morning, although the beach looks like a disaster area.

We’re going swimming with friends in their pool this afternoon and then heading out for tacos!!

I live too far from town to hear any fireworks. The neighbors grandkids might have had some if they had been here but they all went to a waterpark for the holiday. I just watched fireworks on PBS. I didn't even think about wearing my 4th of July shirt.

I would like to go camping but the dog is on medicine for the next 2 weeks. The neighbors would feed for me but I hate to ask them to also give him medicine. I'm still looking for all that rain we were suppose to get. I think Texas got most of the rain. The pond could use some rain.

Quite a few fireworks were set off in my neighborhood Tuesday evening (July 3). It was, unfortunately, the shape of things to come.

It turned out to be rather worse than I anticipated. As I said in an earlier post, for the last several years I have left town for the 4th. Was unable to this year because of illness.

On Wednesday, July 4 there were a few pops, crackles and booms beginning around 7:00 p.m. (well before dark). By 7:30 p.m. they began in earnest, pretty much non-stop, from 7:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. Yes, five hours of terror for my poor Joeboy.

I closed my bedroom doors, so for the first hour or so he cowered in the dark hallway outside these rooms. After about an hour he crept out of the hallway, climbed onto the couch (he is allowed), then climbed into my lap (imagine, if you will, near 50# of lap dog). Joe has never been a lap dog, and has never before expressed any desire to sit on my lap, although I have often invited him to do so (with a 50# dog, my lap is not that big!). He then spent the next four hours sitting on my lap at "attention",panting, drooling, dripping saliva, trembling, and jerking at each successive boom. There were hundreds of them.

The only thing that seemed to calm him, if only a tiny bit, was to firmly grasp him around his chest and his rear, and hold him tight and close against my own chest. Again, this is a dog that, although friendly and affectionate, has never before expressed any desire to be a lap dog whatsoever. Until last night.

After the booms stopped (at about 12:30 a.m.) it took him another hour to stop panting and shaking. Finally, about 2:00 a.m., we were both able to fall asleep.

As I stated in an earlier post, for the last few years I have made sure that I was off in the mountains somewhere, at a campground that doesn't allow fireworks, far away from anything other than night time silence. This has been my "celebration" of the 4th of July.

At the risk of being thought a curmudgeon, or maybe even just an old fart (probably I am both, but don't like to admit it) I would like to close with a few words about fireworks. Until Joe came along, I quite liked fireworks and would seek them out for viewing - but, before Joe, there certainly did not seem to be such an inescapable abundance of them.

Maybe I am a cheapskate (well, yes, I admit to that too) but these things are expensive. And the Independence holiday never passes without fires being started, and people being maimed and injured. I would wish that people (especially people with near neighbors) would forego the fireworks, save their money, and instead donate an amount equal to the cost of their fireworks to the local charity of their choice.

I, myself, will be donating a small amount to my local animal shelter, and also to the thrift store here in my town that uses all proceeds for dog rescue, even though I have not purchased a single firework for probably forty years.

It would seem to me that public displays of fireworks should be enough. If not, perhaps people should donate to these public displays to make them bigger.

I, personally, totally fail to understand why (seemingly) every house on the block seems to feel the need to make a mess in the street (which most never clean up), to put themselves and their neighbor's homes at risk, in order to light up the night sky for a few brief seconds.

My rant for the day.

I just read somewhere about a city in Asia (I think?) that is now using silent fireworks. Not sure how that works but would be a great alternative.

I just drove up the hill to a small park overlooking the valley and could see a few different displays off in the distance. There was someone setting off some smaller ones at the bottom of the hill near me that were pretty good too. My cats weren't too concerned about the booming later when I got home.

Went to the BBQ earlier in the day here. Met some neighbors including the couple who bought the home that was for sale a few months ago that I looked at (just out of curiosity). It is also on the creek but they have a really nice tiered deck with a patio right next to the creek surrounded by huge beautiful palm trees. I am jealous!

Today I have off from work and need to get some things done around here since I was so lazy yesterday.

My dogs tried to bark away the firework noises Thankfully the main fireworks display was on the other side of town. In the past when I've had dogs that were afraid of storms and fireworks the vet gave me tranquilizers for them which worked well.
Heat wave is supposed to break tonight for here too and I hope the weatherman isn't wrong!!!

I know its not morning, but good afternoon. It was back to work for me today, have to do the 20
hrs of classroom, Basically going over procedures manual etc. Real boring!
We survived the fireworks although not much sleep for awhile. Maggie has always hated loud noises,
but Abby was even worse. She actually drooled a little and had a hard time deciding where she felt safe.
Got a jury duty notice for the first day of school, was able to call and change that to a day in sept.
I continue to watch the park models get pulled out of here puts me deeper and deeper into a mood i cant explain or make reason of. I've always been a strong person but this really has my brain unsettled.
Little updatd on Abby,, shes doing great, dont have to worry about poddy pads, in fact she jumps up on passenger seat where i toss her harness and paws at it grumbling at me to take her out. Shd is definately good for my exercise!!

we went over to my grandson's wife's extended family sat by a campfire then they set off some pops ect nothing overly exciting left and went to the towns public display really pretty then home
was afraid that there would be some late bombs but way far away and Shadow didn't get overly excited so was thankful for that..today went and spent too much on plants for the planters yes it is the 5th of July and just planting my and even at that not many of them but do look pretty just more than I planned on oh well it will work out right??? also got a few for a couple of my mom's deck planters she likes double petunias found some of those as well as a fuchsia as well as another plant that will remain nameless as I don't recall it's name nor can I spell it...but a pretty little one

today it warmed up to where the door and windows are open the fantastic fan in the bathroom is on as well as the ceiling fan.. but the sun is going down so should be able to start shutting things off or closing them whatever the case maybe..
