Gmorning all

Was so nice to see all who checked in for Rabbits:) Hope it's a good month for all, even for those of us who forgot. Sue, thanks for sending your cool front our way! Nice rain last night to break up this heat wave--high temps still, but humidity is down a bit for today.

My neighbors(next door) did their usual 4th fireworks on Sat night, so I'm glad that's done. I have a few 4-leggers coming to stay with me from tonight thru the 10th (not my cousin's but a friend of hers). The dog has the typical fear of loud noises, so I'm hoping there aren't too many other boomers tmrw night, at least not as close to me. But I have no plans so will be here to comfort "Munch." The 2 cats will have the entire upstairs apt to themselves. Been a long time since I've had cats around, don't remember any of mine having issues with firework noise?

Think I will mow today, set the deck a bit higher to keep grass longer during this heatwave. All veggies & flowers are looking good, I must say:)

I have had a few cats that were afraid of storms. Some of the ones that went through hurricanes. Now I think it's just me and Possie that worry. I will be in the bathroom and she is behind the utility room door. So far we haven't gotten the predicted rain. There is a big area in the gulf but I don't know which way it's headed. It looks like New Orleans got a lot of rain.

I don't know if the picture of Barbie with the Parrots on her shoulders is real but I would be worried about having those beaks that close to my face. I was at a GTG with a woman that traveled with 2 Parrots. They made more noise than any of the dogs.

I think I will go to town and see if I can do any retail therapy. I have measured the drawers and cabinets in the motorhome so looking for storage things that will fit.

Camping next to people with birds can be annoying! Glad it's a rare occurrence. I never thought about cats being annoyed with fireworks.

I just returned from my retail therapy - groceries! Had to wait about 45 minutes to get a haircut first but I was desperate!

Must say July is off to a good start - probably just jinxed myself! After Sunday's great ride with friends, yesterday I met my niece and her 3 at the Richmond Children's Museum. What a terrific place. The 2 year old has come out of her quiet being and is a hoot! She really made my day. Stopped to get butyl tape for a project and it was $3 cheaper than in Lynchburg!

Riding is quite warm here - reached 103 in the cockpit yesterday.

Yes on comments re parrots on noise and not wanting close to face. The blue and yellow one she is holding is a Blue and Gold MaCaw. We had one from partially feathered chick until he was about 20 years old (died of a sudden infection). We still own a Orange winged Amazon. Even our cats respect the beak. Suzie bird has been with us since 1979, before our boys were born. Each got bit a few times before learning ! Big bird got Nick once requiring stitches. Did we blame the bird? Nope, always it's the humans fault. Places that keep birds like those used for the photo are despicable. Traveling and being handled by unknown people, exposed to who knows what is stressful and dangerous for the bird. Don't even get me started on feeding them sunflower seed "because the bird likes it" ( it's the cause of heart disease in birds, our avian vet tells us). Sorry off soapbox now.
Quiet slightly cooler day here, however will likely have lots of smoke as County Fire (it's name) is now over 70,000 acres about 65 miles north.
Have a happy 4th all. Thankfully our cats like to watch our safe and sane cul de sac fireworks and ignore the small amount of noise.

Settled today at a place called Chief Timothy State Park, along the Clearwater River in eastern Washington. Nice and cool today with partly cloudy skies, but headed tomorrow to Hood Park near Umatilla, WA, and temps are supposed to hit 97 there tomorrow during my short drive and 103 the next day, which I had planned as a rest day. It is only $6.50 per night, so I might leave Thursday morning for someplace further west where it will be a few degrees cooler--like only 90 degrees, but you all know how badly our ACs cool us off over 100!

Good news is that it will be cool northwest of Portland on Friday and Saturday, and also in my destination of Pacific Beach, WA. Glad I don't have pets to worry about fireworks.

I am still recovering from my infected leg, it has been three weeks. I had intense redness, swelling and pain from below my right knee to my ankle. Three visits to Urgent Care, two to the Emergency Room over this period. Ugh.

Visited the doctor again this morning, he prescribed a different antibiotic, stating that since I had been taking the first one for three weeks, and my infection still had not resolved, it obviously was not working. He said with the new antibiotic, I should be over the infection in about another seven days. That will make it a full month that I have been down. I can't remember ever being this ill, for so long a span of time, high fever included along with everything else.

No complaints, though. Without antibiotics I would likely be on the wrong side of the dirt by now.

After Bullard's Beach I had reservations at two Oregon state campgrounds, one after the other, planning to be away over the 4th, but have had to cancel these reservations one by one (hoping all the while that I would be well enough to go to at least the last of them). Nope.

I have intentionally been gone over the 4th for the past three years, ever since Big Joe came home to me. He is terrified of loud booms (and basketballs! Go figure!) and the first year that he was mine he tried to claw through the sheetrock in my living room.

Well, tomorrow is the 4th, and the booms have started over the last few days. Tomorrow night in my neighborhood it will sound like a war zone. The booming will start in the morning, now and again, and by about 8:30 or so the really intense noise begins, and generally goes on until midnight. Luckily, at least so far, he has not reacted as drastically as he had the last time we were home for the 4th. He "comes to attention" for a bit (so far!), as if to tell me, "Mom! Something outside!", but soon settles down.

I am trying different tactics with him as well, because I know I will be home tomorrow night (if I were well enough to go somewhere, I would go). If I see him becoming upset, I gently but firmly scold him (cut it out!), which surprises him and makes him focus his attention on me, rather than what is going on outside. In the past, I have tried gently reassuring him (it's ok, Joeboy), but this seems an acknowlegement (at least to him!) that there really is something to fear, and with each successive boom, and each successive reassurance, he would just get more and more wound up.

Odd, really, that it would work this way - and it seems to, at least so far - and a bit counter-intuitive.

If I can see he is really starting to get wound up, I crate him, and in his crate he usually settles down. But, as I say, the really bad booming won't be until tomorrow night, so we shall see.

Many people around here set off bottle rockets (which are illegal here). I hope to heck that one of the dang things doesn't land on my roof. Keeps the fire department busy, anyway - constant sirens from about nine p.m. until whenever.

Anne, hope your bites get better soon, You reminded me of the years in the 60s where our neighbors on Lake Huron on the tip of the thumb had an English retriever that would retrieve fireworks if someone did not remember to lock her up. She was a great hunting dog, but was not afraid of fireworks, unfortunately. We used to shoot fireworks off over the lake, but sometimes on the beach. Remember those ones that would go sideways, screaming before they exploded? Even almost grabbing one of those before it exploded in her face did not dissuade this dog from chasing fireworks if she could manage to get out of the cabin.

The next dog they got was not only afraid of fireworks but gun shy, so not a good hunting dog, but she did like to fish--standing in knee-deep water trying to catch one in her mouth. My dogs were not too bad with fireworks luckily.

How about a piece of chicken every time a firework goes off?
