I generally don't pay too much attention to St. Patrick's day. In my neck of the woods, it just seems to be an excuse to consume vast quantities of green beer. :o

When I went to my favorite grocery store the other day, there was one of those portable meat coolers parked right at the entry door. A customer can't fail to see this thing when walking in (it will usually be filled with cold items that are currently on sale - from cheeses, to desserts, to meats) - in fact, you almost have to walk around it to get by. Since on this visit it was literally mounded with packages of corned beef, I guessed that St. Pat's day must be coming up soon.

I was hungry that day (NEVER a good idea to go to the grocery store when one is hungry!) and I stopped at this corned beef counter to check it out. The price on this meat was a surprising $1.77/pound. Although my Mom used to make corned beef and cabbage almost every year at St. Pat's day, I had not cooked a chunk in probably 25 years (when I made a nice St. Pat's dinner and my ex-husband - emphasis on the "x" part  refused to eat it. And had a rage attack into the bargain.).

But I was hungry, started thinking about my childhood St. Pat's dinners, so decided to score a chunk. The smallest slab in the bin was a fast $3.65. Less money than even a McDonald's hamburger, so I popped it into my cart and added some carrots, onions, and cabbage to go with it.

The next day I decided to have it for dinner, and realized that I had no idea - at all - how to cook the thing. Went online and found a crockpot Martha Stewart recipe (thanks, Martha!) figuring I couldn't go wrong with dear Martha.

I then called and invited my neighbor for the feast.

About an hour into the 8-hour cook time, things began to smell kinda strange in my house. Kind of a corn-beefy smell, but not exactly what I expected. Um, not at all what I expected. Thought for a moment of tossing it (I'm kind of that way, having had food poisoning more than once in the past) but decided to keep going.

Well, to make a long story shorter, when I finally served it up it was positively delicious! A blend of flavors - the meat, the spices, the potatoes, the carrots, the onions - that I had totally forgotten.

I'm guessing, now, that the "strange smell" was just because I hadn't smelled it in so long.

You can bet your bottom dollar that it won't be another 25 years before I cook this treat again!!

:D

Happy St. Pat's Day, everyone!

Anne

Good morning gals. I am not a big St Patty's celebrator. No Irish in me.

Had a long, long night. Took my meds before bed and started feeling nauseous a little later. I tried the anti-nausea pills they gave me but that didn't work. I tried toast, then some antacids, then GingerAle, then Pepto, spread out over 7 hours! Finally started feeling a little better by 5 am and fell asleep for a few hours. Tummy is still sore with lots of indigestion. Just had another slice of toast. My mind was also racing with various thoughts, mostly not good ones, very depressing. I am blaming the Tamiflu on these side effects.
Will try going back for a nap in awhile.

Rained off and on all night. Sun is out now. Seems to just rain overnight now which is good. More rain later in the week again. We need it. Starting to look nice and green around here now.

Yesterday, I had a followup doctor appointment scheduled in the afternoon. I also really needed to get some cat food, soup, and some other essentials I was completely out of. I knew I didn't have the energy to do both, so I postponed the doctor appointment til Monday and headed to Walmart. Quickly got what I needed plus a humidifier and got back home. I was right. No way I could have done both. I figured the doctor appointment would be better done after a few days of (hopefully) getting better anyways. Humidifier seems to be working good. I can breathe easier now.

Hope you have a good day!

Wearing my Saint Patricks shirt and will put corned beef in Instant Pot later for its 90 min. Skipping the cabbage as I can't eat a lot and son can't eat it so just doing the beef. He will have a sandwich with it and I'll have bacon browned brussels sprouts. Few sprinkles in afternoon I think. Have a good day all.

Happy St. Patrick's day all. As a kid I didn't like the smell or look of corned beef, cabbage, etc. But, now I really like to
have it once a year. This year I also added mushrooms along with the potatoes, carrots, onions. I even made enough to take over to my daughter's - she and the kids hate it but her husband loves it. I will take it over in a bit.

It has been raining off and on here in north central CA all morning. Now the sun is poking out some.

Sun is out here, at least for a while. Dog and I went for a walk and since nothing is jumping out at me to do today think I will see what Netflix for Amazon Video has to offer. Having leftovers today. Chicken thighs, roasted brussels sprouts and a small salad. Trying to be extra good as weigh in day is Monday. I am not much of a corned beef kinda gal but I love sausage and cabbage. Corned beef always seems a little grisly to me but it has a good flavor.

With all this dang nice weather I should be camping LOL soon enough April my camping season starts.

I'm not a corned beef fan.. Nor do I like cooked cabbage. But I love raw cabbage and have some, so that's my St Patrick's Day homage.

I loved the years I was downtown Chicago (working) but able to see the parade. I hated getting across town to the train lol. A few years ago I took a bus into Savannah for St. Patrick's Day. They do an awesome job and If I'm ever in the area for it, I'll go again.

There's a dance here tonight. I don't want to break my record (haven't been to one yet this season) so plan to stay home.

I'm kicking myself right now for saying I'll work a couple extra days....I could be done lol

Way past morning but what kind of Irishman would I be if I didn't pop in to say Happy St Patrick's Day everyone.

I was busy this morning doing a few things in preparation for a move to Winslow, AZ tomorrow. Possibility of some snow on the Mogollan rim here in Show Low, but the host & ranger both said it should be gone quick and the route up AZ-77 gets taken care of quickly (per the ranger) since its the main route north from here. Both propane bottles have been topped off too. Haven't had any problems - fingers crossed - since the belly is heated too.

Supposed to have a couple days in the 70s next week. Good. I'm tired of sweatshirts.

Well that's it from me. Have a good day ladies however you celebrate.

Cheryl, have fun in Winslow. My original plans had me going there next Saturday... But everything changed lol and I won't get there this year at all. You've really been having good weather considering you're going to many of the cooler/colder areas.
