Looks like I'll be opening MC? Guess it is still early enough here on the east coast. Another beautiful day, although brief rain showers are on their way this a.m. Can't complain! So sad for all those in the extreme heat out west!

Yep, had a great time with OSharon--except for poor Lola's awning. Always something with our rigs, just like houses. Donna, glad you're taking some breaks from your cleaning to get out with Phee. BTW, when I was helping my pack-rat aunt in FL, I "snuck" things out to the thrift store or dump a little at a time. Maybe not "ethical," but like you say, a lot of stuff she'd never know was missing?? She had never-opened calendars from as far back at 1998 that were stuffed in a drawer under tons of linens, which also she never used. And which also made an attractive home for roaches, so I think I was justified?

Well, I hear the garden calling me. Surely something I can do out there before the showers arrive:)

Good morning Carolb & everyone else... I did try that with my dad and lo and behold did he not check the trash can doug things out... I guess I'm just giving up on that for now lol... going to try get over to the church and do some crafting with the ladies for the bazaar today I haven't been able to get over there much... I stopped and looked at a Roadtrek yesterday that I've been passing by for the last few weeks... I am not going to buy it but he did come over and check out my rig it's going to get back to me about what we might be able to work out I like this idea because it helps me to figure out where I stand on what I could do and can't do do... also he told me where he thought one of my leaks was coming from we talked about it and he said any good RV tech or dealer should have checked it ...I thought they all knew what they were doing... it's around the lights... so if nothing else comes out of this I'm going to get those fixed and hopefully that will fix that problem... today is my 71st birthday so I took myself to McDonald's and got a big breakfast with hotcakes happy birthday to me...lol... that was after Pheebe and I went to the park at Sunrise and to walk well I better get ready for the crafter ladies... have a good day & B safe...donna

Thanks for starting Coffee these past couple of mornings Pat and Carolb. Been busy around here. Running errands, putting stuff away and organizing garage and then yesterday installed another 100 feet of fencing and moved some of what was installed on Sunday. Now the dogs have a larger yard and they are so happy. Also took down the barricades on the deck now that they can roam out beyond that. Might move one section back a few feet from the garage though. Not sure if lawn tractor will make it through the gate where I put it. KInda forget about that yesterday. One does need to mow grass. That's on today's agenda too. And some weed whipping. Bought a couple of hanging baskets at Lowes yesterday since they are marking them down. So now have two handing on my porch. Nice to be able to have some flowers around. Things are shaping up slow but sure here. Figured out how to use the washer and dryer, both of which are going to be replaced later on. Washer is an old Kenmore and the dial to set the desired wash time isn't working that great. Dryer is an old Roper and takes forever in a day to dry stuff. Going to run the vac this morning and then head into town to pay a couple of bills and pick us some fence anchors etc. Time to finish up the loose ends for now and start getting things ready for vacation next week. Heading to my favorite resort in the U.P. for a week. Nice and cool here this morning, in the 50's and heading to mid 70's.

Pat, sorry to hear about losing a couple of steers to the heat. Never thought about that, but on those open plains, not much shade for them to get under Doens't it make you wonder how the early pioneers dealt with that as they slowly treked across there. Barb, hope you hae a great time on your camping trip. Carolb, I"m sure you will find something to do in that garden. If you get bored, I have lots to do here, Good luck with the tooth Judy.

Well, guess I had better get dressed. Have two calls to a tree guy and a builder that I am waiting to hear back from, so need to get with it . You all have a nice day, keep cool out there in the dreadful heat and hopefully nobody within range of the fires.

Good morning ladies
A fun busy day yesterday, took Bills grandsons to the lake, no one
caught any fish but the dips in the water were very refreshing.
The block wall guys finally started their job here, unfortunately
Maggie was beside herself with all the banging and noise. She was
so nervous all evening. It never occurred to us when we left the
dogs at home the trauma she would go through with no one here to
comfort her over the noise.
Everyone is still sleeping, think yesterday wore everybody out.
We supposedly have plans to take the boys to Sealife Aquarium
and Legoland today, but might change that out to Crackerjax instead.
Legoland is expensive but we buy tickets online 24 hrs in advance
combining it with Sealife, it will save quite a lot. We will see.
Not much else is really interesting to say, will close for now. Y'all

Good morning! A coolish morning here, warmer later and 90% chance of rain tomorrow. So need to get out today and mow. Housework will wait until tomorrow! My schedule got messed up yesterday since I had the GS for the day. Took him and his cousin to the pool for part of the afternoon. Been years since I've been to a community pool!

I finally caught up on my reading here! Looks like there were lots of birthdays last week so happy belated birthday! And happy birthday today, Donna! Liz, you are in a lovely part of the country! Enjoy! Waiting for Jim to come and look at Lola and see what he needs to do to get her fixed. The gorilla tape is so unattractive! Would love to get her fixed so I can finish my trip to NY to explore Carolb's area! Sue, glad to hear you are in your new house and getting settled. Your vacation next week will be well deserved! Time to get going here and get something done! If you are on the road, travel safe!

Good morning all.

I don't usually post here, but now that I'm on vacation and have a bit of time I'll say hello.

First, Sue, you might want to check your dryer vent. Your clothes might not be drying because the vent's clogged with lint (don't ask how I know ...)

Second, those fires are in my backyard. Here's a picture of the "Fish Fire" about 15 minutes after it started -- it's probably 3 miles west, as the crow flies. They're thinking that it was intentionally started.



This is a little closer -- probably about a mile, and later in the afternoon. The temps were about 110* on Monday. Not a fun day.



And this is what they first called the Reservoir Fire -- up in the canyon behind me, probably 5 miles north. This one started when someone drove off the road and their car caught fire.



Both fires have merged, and they're calling it the San Gabriel Event now. This is what it looked like late afternoon on Monday. I'm standing right in front of my house:



Voluntary evacuations were called mid-afternoon on Monday, but most of us on our street stayed. We were never in any danger, but because of the 2 fires being relatively close to us and each other, the authorities didn't want to take any chances. The fire we had 2 years ago was much scarier, and I did leave for 36 hours for that one.

And this is what I've seen the past two nights. There's a spot at the top of the hills that haven't burned in close to 20 years. They can't reach it except by air, so it's been hard to fight after the sun goes down.



Surprisingly, the smoke hasn't been bad here -- it's traveling away from us, as is the fire. This morning I woke up to temps in the low 70s/high 60s, and could open the house up for a bit. The fire is moving away from me, but is only about 10% contained. Everything closeby -- all the hills you see in the pictures -- don't have much old growth, so there isn't anything to burn. That's good.

So that's been part of the "fun" around here. The other part has been Mr. Jed. For the past week he's been throwing up. Not non-stop, but enough to be worrisome. Well, things finally came to a head on Saturday and I took him to the vet. Long story short, after an ultrasound of his GI, the vet is seeing a "not normal" stomach. Without opening him up and doing a biopsy we won't know if he's got an infection & majorly irritated stomach or it's cancer. We're going to treat him as if it's an infection & see how he responds. He's on antibiotics and a special diet, and so far, so good. If he begins throwing up, we'll know it's something else & I'll treat the symptoms until that doesn't work anymore. I'm not going to put him through invasive surgery -- he's 10 years old -- just to be told it's cancer & they can't do anything. So we're taking a day at a time, and he's happy. Me ... it's hard. We're leaving on July 6 for a month on the road. He's coming, of course.

So, that's life around here. I'm hoping for some blissfully boring days ahead.

Laura, I thought I saw your neighborhood on the Weather Channel yesterday and thought that's not good. Kind of like when we heard people were riding down our road in a boat. I never did get to see that video. I hope Jed gets to feeling better and it's not the worst case.

Sue, like Laura said, check the dryer vent. Don't ask me how I know that either. I don't like those paper or what ever they are vent hoses. You can buy aluminum ones at Lowe's or Home Depot and they are not that hard to change.

Ava, going to the lake sounds nice but Legoland, not so much in the heat you have been having. I went to the one in Florida a couple of years ago and everything is outside. My grandson will be here this afternoon. I don't know how we are going to entertain a 14 year old for 6 weeks.

I was so mad at Stinky last night. I had just washed the sheets and mattress cover and she threw up in the bed. I put everything in the washer again and when it finished my washer said I put too much soap. I put it on rinse and spin and when that finished they were still wet. I didn't check the setting and the spin was on minimum. It doesn't have a setting for just spin so had to put it through rinse and spin again.

Laura, you are incredibly lucky the wind is going the opposite direction! I would be choking and coughing with my asthma if it were coming my way.

Went to dentist yesterday with my broken tooth. He did x-rays and found a cavity on the next tooth, just below the old cap, so I ended up having prep for two new caps. And since I do not have dental insurance, this means I had to sell some stock to pay for it--$3,000!! I knew one cap was coming up this year, so now I will cancel my dental appointment in August with my regular dentist for that cap. Anyway, I have a sore mouth after all the work.

And to irritate me even more, Dell called me (from India, of course) this morning at 6:00 am to discuss "my business with Dell" but would not tell me what "business" they wanted to discuss without my giving them the last four digits of my SS or my birthdate so I hung up!! I suspect it is my credit account I opened with them, but I will call them later on MY terms, not theirs!!! I think I am less fond of them than Verizon, and that takes a lot.

It was 100 degrees yesterday in Rio Vista where I am staying. Only 95 in Napa! Hot today, also.

Those are some scary fire pictures! So far here in northern Ca it's mostly been grass fires out in a day and sure hoping we don't get into a situation like last year with hundred thousand and more acres involved and people injured and killed. Warm here with temps at or near 100 for next week or so and not much planned but staying cool. Have to take son to Dr at 4 and hope traffic is not too awful. At least I can take city streets not the freeway full of commuters headed home. Have a good day all.

WOW Judy that is really expensive. I go to Yuma and go across the border to Algodones Mexico, great dentists there and most of them trained in the USA for their residency. I had 2 crowns and a filling for $700 a few years ago I will be heading there again maybe this winter.

Laura so glad the fires are headed away from you and thinking good thoughts for Jed. He looks like such a sweetie.

I am just doing a little cleaning around here and getting ready to head to the coast for a week the end of the month. Starting to get warm here so time to go WEST. Will be catching up with Liz and maybe a couple of other gals, sure hope so.

About the dryer vent--those things can cause fires if they are full of lint. (Happened to a cousin of mine.)

If it is a short distance from the dryer through the wall directly to the outside, you can take the vent hose apart yourself and check it out. Otherwise, as happens when it goes through a wall, you should call someone in to clean it. They should be checked and cleaned at LEAST every two years, every year if they go several feet through a wall. In our condo, we had ours cleaned professionally every year because some of them went 25' to get to the outside!!

IN the long run, this will save you money on energy and also possibly save you from a fire.

I also use a dentist in Mexico. But mine is south of Texas. That's where I'll be heading from here... so far my broken tooth is causing no pain and seems stable. My last crown in the states was close to $1k. My four in Mexico were $800. Love my dentist there.

I, too, have had personal experience with a clogged dryer vent. And once, somehow, the vent got smashed mainly closed. We never discovered how that happened, but quickly found it out when clothes weren't drying.

Tomorrow I head off on my long weekend. It feels so strange to be going without the rv. I have no luggage anymore, so I'll be a true bag lady. And I'm sure I'll forget way too many things. Not sweating any of it... so looking forward to this weekend.
