Sheila, yes the large tomatoes in the photo are called Cherokee Purple, and yes they are an Heirloom variety. I wouldn't say they are misshapen, because this might imply that there is something wrong with them. There is nothing wrong with them, they are of a normal (although unusual compared to other tomato varieties) shape for this kind of tomato.

Each tomato on the vine (at least those that I am growing here) is shaped a bit differently one from the other; some are quite large and convoluted (I had one that was nearly 1 1/2 pounds for that one tomato), others are smaller and have less nooks and crannies.

When ripe, they are not red, but a deep reddish purple (both the skin and the flesh). Also, the skin of this tomato when it is ripe is very delicate. Even with care it is difficult not to bruise them or accidentally tear the skin when picking them. The plants themselves are very hardy, and particularly heat tolerant in my climate.

They have an outstanding tomato taste, are fabulous in salads, salsa, soups and sandwiches (they are an excellent slicing tomato) - good just about anywhere one might want to have a particularly tasty tomato.

But, although the plants themselves are hardy and very heat tolerant, neither the fruit size nor fruit shape is uniform. Add to that the delicate skin of the tomatoes of this variety, one will never see them in the store. Why? Because commercial tomatoes need to have a somewhat standard size and shape, and the constant jostling and bumping of shipping would likely turn them to mush long before they reached their destination - so they can't be shipped commercially.

I think what has taken the taste out of tomatoes that are commercially grown is that commercial tomatoes all need to be of a fairly standard size and shape, and be tough enough to withstand shipping. Commercial tomatoes have been genetically selected for a long time for these characteristics. So these days at the store we have a bin full of bright red tomatoes of much the same size and shape and weight - and not much tomato taste.

Since I am a tomato lover, these days it seems that the best way to guarantee a wonderfully tasting tomato is to grow it one's self. I don't enjoy canning, but tomatoes freeze well, so I mostly wash them, slice or quarter them (I don't blanch nor skin them, although I do remove the cores), and then freeze them (the small grape tomatoes in the photo I just wash and then freeze whole). Frozen tomatoes, once thawed, are excellent to use in sauces, salsa, soups and whatever. I especially like the wonderful home-grown tomato taste in home made salsa.

The way things are going (knock wood!), if I am lucky and we don't have too much heat, I hope to soon have enough tomatoes in my deep freeze to last until tomato harvest begins next year.

Yum!

Anne

Good late evening!

I ended up going to WM to get more bottled water to get me thru the hot weekend hopefully, and picked up some smaller bins, and got gas in the Jeep too. Gas here is between $4.50 and $5.00.

I worked on my bedroom a bit, sorting thru the books and papers. Didn't quite finish that since I started having pain from my sciatica and had to lay down for awhile. Will finish that tomorrow and a few other things in my room, as well as do a good cleaning, especially under the bed. Lots of dust and fur bunnies under there! :o

As far as reading, I prefer actual books. I read a lot of non-fiction like travel, spirituality, self-improvement, and lately, ADHD books. I get quite a few from the library, but a lot from Amazon too. I order the cheap, used ones tho so only a few bucks each if I can. I do re-read them. With ADHD, I can't usually remember what I read so I tend to highlight things I want to remember, and then go back and reread the highlighted parts. That is why I save so many of my books because I do go back quite often and re-read them. Last year I brought about 6 large boxes of books to donate to the library for their book store. :o I do get some Kindle books from Amazon, mostly free ones that I "borrow" from there. I don't enjoy reading them as much tho. I will only have 3 small bins of books to take on the road with me.

I got my roll of bubble wrap today so I will start working on putting that on the windows this week. I put my hand on one of my windows today and just about burned my hand! I hope the bubble wrap doesn't melt on the windows!

Sheila, that BBQ place sounds really good! I love good BBQ! We have a Texas Roadhouse opening up here in September. Am looking forward to checking that out!

I used to love going to festivals and fairs, but as I get older, I dislike crowds more and more, and finding parking is very frustrating for me since I don't want to walk so far anymore, either. And the cost of everything! OMG!

It was pretty hot today, up to 113* but supposed to hit 120* on Saturday! Yikes! :o I won't be leaving the house for the next 5 days at least! My electric bill went from $40 in May, to over $80 in June. Don't even want to know what it will be for July and August. Previous years it has gotten over $150 for really hot months. Hopefully, the bubble wrap will help some! :)

Kitties are happy. Romeow finally used the new cat door on his own today! He is so funny! When I drop a treat on the floor for him, he literally picks it up in his paw and puts it in his mouth! I have never seen a cat do that with a dry piece of food/treat! Sophie just bats her treats around like a toy! Sometimes she will eat them, sometimes not. Romeow always finds the ones she doesn't eat. They are so entertaining!

Yesterday was the one-year anniversary of Lola leaving me...I still miss her so much! She was such a great cat and we went thru a lot together over the 14 years I had her.

I slept good last night. Hoping to do that again tonight...
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Anne, in our local BelAir market, part of the Raleys chain, there is always a tray of heirloom tomatos including the Cherokee Purples! I always admire their interesting shapes, even though I can only eat very limited tomato products due to sensitivity! I can almost taste them, just thinking about them!
