I have been buying stuff on Amazon for about twenty years. Over time, I have noticed that any specific product item, if it remains on Amazon long enough, (and accumulates a large enough number of Amazon's "Ratings"), some percentage will always be negative, for one reason or another.
My personal "rule of thumb" (I am not advocating this for anyone else, this is just for me) that if there are a large enough number of ratings to suit my fancy (at least in the hundreds, often in the thousands) and if the 5 star and 4 star ratings combined are in the mid to upper 80's percentage-wise (or above) I will generally make the purchase (again, this is just me).
During my twenty Amazon years, I don't believe that I had ever returned anything - until after the pandemic hit. Since then, of the random stuff I buy on Amazon (from beads for making jewelry, to lapidary supplies, to bathroom shelving) about 10% - 15% of the items are of poor quality (most recently I ordered a bathroom shelf that came without instructions, nor the 30 or so bolts required to put it together - it went back).
I now have no hesitation to return poor-quality items and have found, thus far, that the return process via Amazon is relatively pain-free (although I still hate doing returns).
Again, this is just me. All of us, of course, need to make our own determinations of what works for us.
And, of course, choosing whether or not to purchase personal items - like masks - sight-unseen, online, is particularly fraught.
