Rainy Tuesday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Rainy Tuesday

Postby Colliemom » Tue Nov 19, 2024 7:53 am

Morning all. Like Karen, our weather pattern is rain all week as well. Might even see a little white stuff tomorrow night. Way past time. I remember when snow on the ground was pretty much a given by now. Oct. 26 is historically first date for snow. Ski resorts would be prepping for a Thanksgiving weekend opening. Won’t be happening this year unless temps drop to allow snow making. Last years mild Winter added up to a whopping $41 million in losses to the states ski industry and who knows how much to the winter tourism industry. Was thinking yesterday, seems funny to see people out riding bikes this time of year. Was a beautiful 54°yesterday. But road workers, roofing companies, builders, landscapers etc. are getting added time to do project wrap ups.

Been recovering from a bout of tendinitis in my left shoulder area which restricted my arm movement. Been bothering me for about a week and a half and got really painful middle last week. So called my chiropractors office and we moved my appt. For this week back to last week. She did some adjustments and had her assistant do a laser therapy on it and said to alternate ice/heat at home. That was Thursday and by Sunday I was gaining most of the use of my arm back. No longer using the ice/heat routine. Had another round of treatment yesterday and will go again tomorrow. That should be the last. Needless to say, other than running errands in town, haven’t been doing anything. Enough idle time, time to get doing something constructive.

Martha, glad you had a fun camping trip. Hope you get the fridge issue solved. Judy’s been up and over the mountains, good job. Got a chuckle over Shirl’s “thumbs” comment. O’Sharon, hope you got the last of the leaves cleared out. Been there don’t that with the wind.
Otherwise, looks like we are all just in a “same old” pattern.

Need to get in the shower, wash my hair etc. and head to town. Annual Medicare Wellness visit today  Starting with a new NP as my other one retired. I’ve seen her once just to touch base and get established. Really like her.

Good Morning Sue. Been awake since 3:30..not even sure why. Got up to potty and just couldnt get back to sleep so turned on the tv for about an hour finally got up at 5. Iwatch says I slept 4hrs and 45 minutes. Sheesh. I feel rested so guess that is something. Since I dont nap I trust I will have a good sleep tonight. Rain, rain, rain every day this week with a huge storm coming. Have the news on and the weather is going to be awful this afternoon and tomorrow.
Great, now we have a "bomb cyclone" coming our way with very high winds projected and ushering in a strong "Atmospheric River" with heavy rain, snow and high winds. Guess I better check the back deck and make sure nothing flyable is out there.
Our ski resorts are getting ready to open early December or sooner depending on weather situation of course.

Not sure what I will get into today. I know I have laundry and will have Henry vacuum and I will dust but other than that no projects. Will go pick up my neighbor at the brake shop this morning and then take him back up when his truck is done. He has a wife and she drives but she is somewhat handicapped after having a couple strokes a few years back. She is a sweety and gets around slower. I also dont think she is an early riser. She plays Bunco with us too so does pretty well. I will have some breakfast when I come back home.

Morning All, Great temps but rain seems to head for Maryland and then head north. Found a Dean Martin video that started my day on a high note. Really miss the positive silly tv from back in the day. :D

Sue, don’t know about the outside world but on this site “Thumbs” stands for Woman Powe.

Back to laundry, chocolate and Yiutube

Karen, I'm definitely feeling your pain.

Where I live here (in the northern part of California's Central Valley) there has been little-to-no (mostly no) rain since about mid-May.

Just for "fun" I checked the weather predictions on Weather Underground for the lower foothills that surround my valley location, my thinking being that lower foothill rain predictions might be a good indicator of the total of volume of water that might soon be flowing my way.

Because, of course, any rain that falls over the lower foothills quickly runs downhill into the Feather River and Oroville dam. I'm about 25 miles below the dam, and about 1 mile from the Feather River.

Well, get this: over the next six days or so the lower foothills are predicted to receive (drum roll!) nearly 12 (count 'em, twelve) inches of rain. My valley area is predicted to get between 6 to 8 inches in the same time period.

Um. . . although we desperately need rain, this actually is NOT good news. This is a freaking LOT of rain. The last time we had this kind of storm come in - as Karen said, they are calling it a "bomb cyclone" storm (LOL, just the name sounds ominous!) - was in 2017, when the Oroville dam spillway crumbled and 250,000 people were evacuated.

Including me.

So I phoned a good friend that lives on some high ground north of the Bay Area, and she said she would be happy to have me come visit. I DON'T want to have to leave, but if push comes to shove (and my only other option is swimming for it) I'm outta here: my swimming skills in high water are pretty much the pits.

Will be getting my "Go" bag ready later today, and keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't get as bad as I am reading that it could.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me too.

And, oh yeah: Happy Thanksgiving. 8-)

Thanks.

Fingers crossed for you, Anne. Shirl, your posts always bring a smile to my face. Karen your sleep from last night reminds me of the night before, making yesterday a blah day for me. TY got me up after I'd only been sleeping an hour or so last night by licking my face. That is his signal to me he needs to go out. It doesn't happen often, but there went last nights sleep lol. But I refused to succumb again and got some caulking done on some needed areas on the tt, did my laundry and attended (via Zoom) the board meeting for my coop in AZ. Just had a small lunch and will make a run to Walmart for just a few things. I have to go in but will wear blinders lol. Sue, I hope the north gets some good winter ski weather.

Good morning to all. Anne hope the prediction of rain is wrong. Good to be ready to go though. Reading about the ski resorts - here in Vegas one of the resorts has been open for a couple of weeks, Been snowing up in the mountains and they make snow. Here in the valley we haven't had any rain, but might get some this weekend. Hope so. My two big pine trees died because of the heat in the summer. Luckily they belong to the company that owns the land, so it is their $$$ to cut them down.
Yesterday was a busy day. We had to be at Bills heart doc at 8:20 in the morning and of course it was way across town - 22 miles. I was surprised we didn't run into more going to work traffic. So made it okay. Doctor changed one of his medications, only taking half of it from now on. It was to slow his heart down, maybe too much. Then put him on a new med to strengthen his heart. Doesn't need to take water pills unless he starts to see some swelling in his legs. So I'll have to keep watch on that. We were both up by 4:30 yesterday morning. On the way home we stopped for breakfast. When we got home he took a nap. Then in the afternoon we again had to go half way across town for him to get the shot in his eye. A late afternoon appointment, 3:40 so we took an Uber. I can't drive after dark nay more. Glad we did as there was a bad accident and driver had to take a detour, We got home about 5:30. I was watching TV later and fell asleep in chair. Then went to bed and slept till 7 this morning. Got to see eyelid doctor in December. Not being able to see really bothers him. As it would any one I guess.
I still try to walk three times a week. Enjoy it now that it is so much cooler.
We probably won't be going any where this winter. Too many health problems going on.
And thats it for around here.

Got to bed early last night, and got a good night's sleep. Have lots of small errands to do today, including getting legal stuff notarized and shipping it FedEx back to law office. Then small stop for boxes and bags for Christmas gifts. Also got to get the things I have bought out from one outside storage bin so I can wrap it. I want to leave as much as I can at son's house and ship some stuff to Ohio. Won't be back here until Dec 20, and that will be too late.

And believe it or not, thumbs are still a bit sore, especially left one. Napa will get some rain, but only about 20% as much as Oregon. Remember the really bad drought a few years ago? When it finally did rain, my son even let his class of high school students go outside so they could look at the puddles!! He said they kept staring out the window because it had been so long that they had had real rain, so he figured it was best to get it over with so they would pay attention to class.

Going to son's house for dinner. Oncologist phone call appt tomorrow, and Dentist appt Thursday. Did see pulmonologist report online and all was normal. So why am I getting these coughing sprees???

Well almost noon here and nary a drop of rain yet!!!! So I am not going to get too hyped up about this storm. I know we will be getting some rain just not sure about how much. And maybe some wind, I am prepared for that. These news and weather people sure do get excited when they have something like this to report. Lots of snow in the mountains. Crater Lake and Diamond Lake have plenty. All the passes will get lots of snow IF the big rain materializes. So I dont nor wont put the news on. Will just stick my nose outside and see what the weather is, safest idea. Anne dont get too excited you may not get what they think you will. And if you do you can worry then LOL I think the coast might get the brunt of this storm just dont think it is going to make it too far inland at the same intensity they are thinking.

Beth I hate going in the grocery store anymore, I am spoiled picking it up, save so much money. But the Winco and Sherms here dont have the pickup option of shopping online. So I try to go in with a list and not go up every dang aisle. I might go to Costco later and pick up a rotisserie chicken. I was going to a few days ago but never got to Costco. Only have a few Costco items on my list.

Getting sleepy just sitting here in the chair so need to get my butt up and moving. Maybe takeing the dog outside might do it. Then need to fix some lunch.

Back frm Wellness visit. All set till next year. They will schedule nammo and bone density for early next year. Can’t get Mammo till later in February as that’s when I had it last year. Also due for colonoscopy, but she told me about a new test (FIT) that I can do here at home, so am going that route once it arrives via UPS or USPS. No bloodwork this year either, which kind of surprised me.

Looks like waking up in the middle of the night is getting to be a fad on here. Same for me. Guess our bodies know when we have had enough or thinks it does. I too was awake around 4ish and got up around 6. Sometimes my sleep is broken by one of the fur kids, usually Piper cause she wet her bed or wants out etc. My bed is about 30 inches high counting the frame, and she pops up there like nothing. Jumping up is one of her specialties. Nothing like being sound asleep and having 50 pounds of dog land right next to you, or practically on me. Hey mom, you awake  Ah, such is the life of a servant….

Beth, I’m hoping for enough snow to get the winter sports season total, off the ground. Snowmobiling is a big business as it impacts, bars, restaurants, lodging facilities everywhere and especially small communities along the trails. Ski resorts can make artificial snow and keep themselves going even in times of low snowfall providing the weather cooperates, but if there’s no snow on the trails, there’s no snowmobiles and cross country skiing, etc.. I think as climate change continues to evolve, eventually it is going to get to a point where those sports may no longer be able to function. Then they will have to change gears and perhaps just keep our warmer season sports going. Bikng, hiking, ORV’s instead of snow toys, May e even golf etc. .

Anne, hope you do not get too much rain, but I did check and the lake is down quite a ways, so it will absorb some of the rain.

I can't remember where, but I read something by a lady who had survived the New Orleans flooding. One of her biggest suggestions is to put things from lower cabinets on top of the cabinets. She said they did not think of it, but had they put some things like coffeepots, mixers, etc from lower cabinets up higher, they would not have been ruined. Do you have a one-story or two-story house? She said to move as much as you can to the upper cabinets or upper story, especially things like photos and family stuff. Books, etc. Obviously, you are personally not going to haul your couch upstairs, but it is a consideration to remember what you have down low that could be moved higher.

I had to go in Walmart as I wanted something to trim some weeds. We take care of our own lots and mine mainly has ground cover but some weeds poke out here and there. Most people use weed wackers but I've broken every weed wacker I've used so. Cut the weeds in no time after I got home. Got a call from a forum friend and only hung up when someone showed up at my door to remind me of SpaceX which would be taking off in a bit. So found a decent vantage point outside and watched what I could see. I still have to make my bed but otherwise I've done enough today.

It started raining about dark yesterday and rained off and on until after midnight. I only got an inch and a half. It was raining hard enough to block the internet and Direct off and on so was aggravating. I can get over the air TV but not always the same shows.

I had several things I wanted to do in Lafayette but only got half done. I need to get on the road earlier. The deli had chicken and sausage gumbo today so picked up some for me and my son.

Judy, the only things of mine that survived Hurricane Rita were the things in the top of closets and things that could be washed. We had never had a tidal surge before so didn't think about putting things up. Thank goodness most of my boxes of pictures were in the top of closets. I lost my album of college pictures because it was in a bookcase along with many cookbooks.

I unplugged the camper to see if how long the coach batteries hold a charge. They were still good this afternoon. Maybe tomorrow I can make it by Auto Zone to get them tested. Since they are almost 4 years old they probably need to be replaced anyway.

Thank you, Judy. Me too. Thanks also to Beth, Carol and Karen. Hope I didn't miss anyone! I sincerely appreciate all of your good wishes.

Well, I did a bit of math, just for fun. . . The lake level today (November 19) is at 755.02 feet, 144.98 feet below "full pool", which is 900 ft. The lake when full holds 3.5 million acre-feet.

https://oroville.lakesonline.com/Level/

Calculating rough percentages, 755.02 ft. is 83.89% of 900 ft., so only about 16% of “room” left before the lake fills up. (Of course, this isn’t totally accurate, because a lake is kind of like a large bowl, wider at the top, narrower at the bottom).

With potentially 12 inches of rain over the Lake Oroville watershed (the watershed comprises 3,200 square miles) during the next few days, this might mean that one or two (or more) million new acre-feet of water flowing into a dam already at about 83.89% full.

More fun with math (LOL, I don’t have anything else to do!):

One inch of rain is equal to 0.623 gallons of water per square foot
12 inches of predicted rain x 0.623 gallons = 7.476 gallons of water per square foot
There are 27,878,400 square feet in a square mile (yep, this is millions of square feet in a square mile)
There are 3,200 square miles in the Lake Oroville watershed

Calculating how many total gallons (or even total acre-feet) of rain is predicted to fall over the 3,200 square miles of the Oroville watershed is, like, a. . . Really Big Number.

LOL.

What it all boils down to is how much rain actually comes, IF it comes, when it comes, and how fast it comes - and how rapidly (if needed) water can safely be released from Oroville dam – fast enough to save the dam, not so fast as to cause major flooding and levee failure downstream.

The other factor, of course, being the new, relatively untested spillway (no major storms like this incoming one since the spillway was totally rebuilt - in a major hurry, after it failed - during 2017/18).

Hope Mr. Spillway behaves like a good boy.

For me, I think I’ll be putting my feet up, getting out my popcorn and just watching the show.

Anne so far we are only getting sprinkles..........they are sideways sprinkles tho. Very windy here. Lots of the highways are closed due to falling trees into power lines. Not right in my immediate area but up the highway into the hills more. They have had to close the roads as the trees keep falling. So closed due to hazardous conditions. We are getting gusts but not super terrible. We shall see if we get much rain tonight and tomorrow. Those are our heavy rain days supposedly.

Karen, at least for now it sounds like you are getting hit a lot worse than I am. It has just been cloudy and overcast here all day, with no wind to speak of. I don't think it is raining yet either at now about 10p.m.

So we'll see!

It's fun to compare notes. Thanks!
