It’s Friday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

It’s Friday

Postby Othersharon » Fri Aug 18, 2023 11:24 am

Just striking noon here in the east. Got up to cloudy and misty morning but the sun is out now and quite a wind blowing. Just was out cleaning up little branches from the trees overnight. And leaves starting to fall and still in the 60’s. Definitely feels like fall! I still haven’t gotten around to the battery situation with the rv but really should do it in the next few days. When I park in back I have to drive up on the yard but the ground has been soft and I don’t need anymore unevenness in the yard so I’m hoping it’ll dry out enough that it won’t make a mess. I should have done it when I had the chance! Barbie, my fingers are crossed that the deal goes through for you plus a month free rent is a nice perk. Anita, hoping your brother is doing okay. My GD is progressing. Most of the staples are out and she actually was able to take a shower the other day and was started on solid foods. She has been able to use a walker and sit in a chair too. So it’s looking hopeful she’ll be able to transfers to the rehab closer to home soon. Again thank you for your kind thoughts for her. Hope the hurricane out in the Pacific doesn’t impact any of you. Flooding seems to be the biggest problem I’m hearing about from this system.
Time to get some lunch and then get busy. I’ll give some more time and hope the area we walk dries out a bit this afternoon so we aren’t dodging mud puddles on our walk! Have a great day and stay safe.

Good morning to Sharon, and all who follow.

Weather has not been kind here in Northern California this past week - it has topped out at 110* or above here every day for the last several days.

I have been lucky enough to get quite a few tomatoes out of the back yard earlier in the summer, but this past week not so much. "Close to ripe" tomatoes will look "almost there" one day, the next day they have literally cooked on the vine and rotted. Never seen anything like it.

The heat has been unrelenting the last several weeks. Quite a few wildfires popping up now in the far northern part of the state, most of them east of Mt. Shasta volcano. Thankfully, none near me this time around. At least so far. Perhaps the possible rain from Hillary will take care of these fires, or at least help to knock them down.

Looking at the weather channel this morning it looks like Barbie's area is going to be absolutely walloped by Hurricane Hilary, with a LOT of unseasonable rain and high winds.

This from The Weather Channel: "A tropical storm watch has been issued for Orange and San Diego Counties. This is the first time the National Hurricane Center has issued such a watch for Southern California."

https://weather.com/safety/hurricane/news/2023-08-16-hurricane-hilary-remnant-soaking-california-desert-southwest

We may get up to an inch of rain here in my area of Northern California by Monday or Tuesday. And it NEVER rains here in August.

Don't know whether to be welcoming or dreading this coming storm. Probably won't do much here in my area, but it is poised to do a tremendous amount of damage in the Southland, because we just don't have hurricanes out here.

At least we didn't used to. . .

Earthquakes, yes. Hurricanes, no.

Anne

On Edit: I am now reading that Hurricane Hilary has increased to a Category 4 Hurricane, with a small possibility of it becoming a Category 5.

This is a Very Big Deal for California: "The 1939 Long Beach Tropical Storm was the only known cyclone of tropical-storm strength (or greater) to make landfall in California."

Sharon, 60 sounds so good to me. It's only 95 here so far but I'm sure its headed to 100. I thought my air conditioner wasn't working right this morning because It's 78 in my office. I changed the filter and hung a thermometer from the vent in the kitchen. It says the air coming out is 71. I never did get the ac serviced this spring so called to get that done. They aren't doing maintenance work right now because they are backed up but put me on the list. Said to call if I have trouble. I have been using Auto Zone for batteries for a while. They even replace one when I was on the road one time because it was under warranty and they could look up my account on their computer. Glad your GD is progressing. That has to be so hard.

I did next to nothing yesterday and today looks about the same. They are bailing hay on the land next to me again. That has to be some hot work.

I am really hoping for this storm to not impact my area as much as they are saying, so I don't lose a potential buyer! :o Bad timing!
Lynn posted on Wednesday's thread, but says they have warnings there too. Being on the ocean, they could see a lot of damage along there.

I hope we don't get another Haboob ahead of this storm. My car already looks like it is covered in mud. Was going to wash it this week but am glad I didn't waste the money! I should fill the tank today tho. I never thought I would have to prepare for a hurricane out here! Luckily, it will be "just" a tropical storm by the time it gets here. They are clearing out the washes (canals made for heavy rain runoff) around here to get rid of excess debris. We will get the runoff here from the mountains as well as whatever rain we get locally, so the washes get really full. Eventually that runs into the Salton Sea south of here.

The high today will be 113*, but the next 3 days will be in the low 80's! Probably very humid tho. Right now it is sunny and not even a whisper of a breeze. The calm before the storm...

Today, I will make sure nothing is outside that can blow away, then put away my laundry and clean up the house a little. Also, get my work stuff put together for tomorrow, charge up my clippers, etc. I work 9-3 tomorrow and 10-4 on Sunday. Will probably be a quiet weekend due to the weather.

Never heard back from that guy about the microwave roll: .

Have a good day and stay safe!

We have had beautiful weather for week and I'm really enjoying it but all good things come to an end and it going back to mid-nineties and humid. I've had a busy two days so going out to meet friends this afternoon for a beer and catching up. One of the ladies cooks a lot so she is stopping by here first and bring gumbo, spaghetti, frozen meatloaf, tomatoes and a dozen eggs!!! Yay.
I took Pippa to the vet for a check up yesterday and after waiting 30 minutes I left. The office is just totally unorganized and they have a very small waiting room. I'm going to check out a different vet. I think I have time for a short nap. Have a great rest of your day.

Sharon, shower and food must have been wonderful for your granddaughter! Certainly a long road. Barbie, fingers crossed the storm doesn't leave you a mess and that all you in the path stay safe. Niece is living outside of San Diego so they are on 'watch'. Something else to worry about. BJ, I envy you having friends to get together with.

I have my days so mixed up - this has been a very long week! Texted my brother last night with no response. His wife spent the day at the county fair yesterday so why am I worrying? If anyone thinks I am being too judgmental about her, that's okay. I'm just basing it on my own feelings and experience. Sheila, I do not like when doctors predict how long a person will survive! Steven supposedly had 6 months but developed pulmonary emboli. My mother was told 3 months and lived 11! I have been having trouble putting two thoughts together and making decisions this week, but I'm going to get back on track today! Temps down in the 80s! Smoke hasn't rolled in yet today.

Almost afternoon. Home from the glorious weather on the coast. Was in the 70's with a light breeze until yesterday the wind picked up a bit but none of us complained. Wednesday the gals went deep sea fishing and said the Captain said it was really rough. I stayed home as I went ONCE and said never again!!!! I do believe I heard those words this time also from both of them. We had a nice fish dinner that we did on the BBQ at Laura's trailer. Mostly just sat around enjoying the cool and visiting. Yesterday we went to the Casino for breakfast and it was good. Then Lisa my RN friend, Laura and I spent a little time gambling. I made $14 so decided to take the Casino shuttle back to Laura's trailer, Left Lisa there, she left with $900 about an hour later she moseyed back to the RV. I told her she uses those slot machines like her own personal ATM LOL However Laura and I bet 0.40cents and she bets $4 Bet big to win big. I play for fun, if I bet big I would not be there long ha ha Then she left and was going up the coast to hook up with her nephew somewhere near the dunes.

Came home this morning. Waited to leave until around 8am. I wanted it to be totally light and the deer gone. I did see 3 dead ones but no live ones thank goodness. Nice drive, only 1hr 45minutes away and a good road. Turned the air on as it was quite warm and stuffy in the house. Put everything away UGH...worst part of going anywhere. Laundry in, bite of lunch watered the plants, picked some tomatoes and was in time for the garbage pickup even tho I did not have much in my can. Now going to go fetch the garbage can and have a Mocha and relax a bit until it is time for more laundry. Henry vacuumed a couple times while I was gone so that is all good. I might dust later.....or not we shall see.

Barbie lets hope you get some rain but without the flooding that goes with it on the desert. Sharon good news on your granddaughter, she is progressing but what an ordeal for her and family. Keep giving us updates on her progress and hope she gets to go to a closer rehab soon. Anne, I was lucky my tomatoes fared pretty well for a couple days of 110° weather. Going to be 87 today YAY but...going to be 91 and 92 for Saturday and Sunday. Oh well cant complain I lucked out this week and we booked this weeks reservations many weeks ago.
Anita I for one dont think you are being too judgemental. I would be right there until he was out of the woods. AND we dont come with an expiration date on us so I dont want any doctor telling me how long I have. It is a guessing game for them, and you can have terminal illness and die tomorrow. Or last a long time. We just dont know. Lyn's son is not doing well so hopefully hospice and keep him comfortable. I know some of you remember my friend Malia that took the "cocktail" exercised her right to death with dignity law here in Oregon and passed peacefully within 5 minutes. Sign me up.

Sharon, that's great news about your gd. And I'm sure she'll be thrilled to move closer to home. Anita, my Mom wasn't expected to last a month after being removed from life support. Try 4 years.

I love Zenni. Should have never gotten my last progressives elsewhere. And, boy am I glad I decided against purchasing from where I got the exam Monday for way too much money, v then a two week wait for the glasses. Went online with Zenni, ordered Monday night, paid an extra but for speedier shipping (still saving about $200) and got my new glasses today. I can see again! Cataract surgery can wait a bit. On that I agree with this doctor unless I have trouble at night too much.

Worked the day shift and enjoyed it. Now two days off. Then 3 closing shifts, but they start closing earlier Monday during the week, so I'll be off at 8 instead of 9.

Karen, I was just talking about Malia this week. I'm so glad she got to pass the way she did.

Hi all,

Looks like we're going to get some rain with Hilary. Based on the current track, Barbie, I hope it shifts somewhat & doesn't get too bad where you are. Praying that this doesn't scare your potential buyer - after all this isn't a common thing here. Lyn, hope you stay safe too. And anyone else in the path. I just need to remember to close my outdoor umbrella on Sunday.

Anita, I agree with others, you are NOT judgmental. And no doctor knows how long someone has - No one does.

Martha, I'd love to live where folks speak French - growing up at least hearing it occasionally would make my current journey so much easier. But hey, what else do I have to do? It's a challenge, but I'll be better prepared than most American tourists for my trips to France next year. Classes start next week so we'll see if I stay in both or drop one. I have 2 weeks to decide & still get a refund of the tuition.

I have a week reprieve before I start taking care of the baby. At least that's nice so I can focus on other things next week.

Just booked flights to KC for a weekend in October. My sister always has an event where all the cousins & their kids come to get a pumpkin out of the pumpkin patch & just have a great time before winter settles in. My granddaughter has a baby due next month, so it'll be nice to see everyone & see my 2nd great-grand baby. I haven't seen some of the other kids for several years.

Well, I'm trying to get my first week's assignments done so I'd better get back at it.
Stay safe,
Catherine

Barbie, when they say a hurricane is coming here the bread and water is gone from the stores. You better get your bread and water. lol I got my last microwave at Lowe's and they gave me the name of a guy to install it. Maybe the place you got your microwave could give you the name of someone to install it. I get so aggravated with repair men. I called about my leaking toilet about the 10th and I haven't heard from them. I need to pick up my utility trailer but my truck is still in the shop. They had to order parts so don't know when I'll get it back.

The high today was 103. The temperture in my office is up to 80 but it's on the Southwest end of the house and gets the afternoon sun. The rest of the house is cool enough. The local weather is saying it could be up to 106 next Wednesday and Thursday. We could have over 100 degree temperatures into September.

Anita, you get to be putout about your sister-in-law, it's your brother. My brother passed away in 2000 and I didn't find out for almost a week because it wasn't convenient for his daughter to plan a funeral. And then, between her and her mother, it was a circus. When someone is in the hospital they need someone to see about them.

I agree with the none of us have an expiration date. My mom went longer with her cancer than they thought after she was under hospice care. Anita, you have a right to worry. And I’m sure it’s bringing back other thoughts as well.
Another cool day here at the 45th, but sure was windy. Lots of twigs and even branches down here and there. Haven’t seen any in my yard though. But the white pines are dropping green pinecones like crazy. Never seen that before. They are kind of small too. And acorns are coming down, little bitty ones. Trees are starting to turn a bit too. Going to be a strangle fall. Weather experts say that some years the trees turn early, but it can also be they are stressed due to drought. We only had 7 days in both May and June that recorded measurable rainfall. And even though it was wetter in July, it wasn’t enough to make up for the deficit. The other factor that may be playing into it as well, is the wildfire smoke we had in May and June. It blocked out the sun and possibly the particles in the smoke may have closed the pores in the leaves causing them to not get enough photosynthesis. Time will tell how it all plays out. I know I’ve been seeing a lot of dead and dry leaves on the ground from some trees.

Barbie, don’t stress over the buyers May e backing out. Most people are u der stand able and know things happen. Besides, this will affect your whole sub, so otber sellers are in the same boat. Would certainly get myself to a gas station before the panic stage. After power gets crippled, you don’t know how long it will be before it gets fixed and therefore will not be any gas. Work could get shut down too. Martha, you mentioned bread and milk disappearing off the shelves. When you stop to think about it, people tend to go after perishables when a storm threatens. But that’s the first stuff at risk when there’s a power outage. Lot of good milk does when the fridge is out  Sharon, glad your granddaughter is coming along slow but sure. I’m sure she is happy about her progress too. Anne, why not pick those almost ripe tomato’s and put them in the house to finish ripening. sometimes we have to do that if frost or something threatens overnight. Beth, glad the glasses will help. One worry to leave for later.

Bit of a busy day today. . Stop at vet, Lowes, Home Depot and Meijer. Had lunch at Chinese buffet. Took a a couple cart loads of sand down to the lake access site to fill in a low area. Then a visit with neighbor before the dogs and I continued on our walk. Was a nice day for that.

After a couple beautiful weather days, temps are rising here in Iowa, again. This is higher than the weather will be at my casita in Benson and much higher humidity. Yikes.

High today was 65 and with a strong wind! That compared to yesterday's almost 80. Everyone was in shorts and tshirts today, so they were all shivering. And I had to stop at two freezing grocery stores, so was glad to get back in my sun-warmed vehicle. Spent three hours looking things up at county heritage office. Young man helped me find locations of properties on big charts from 1861 and 1880. We compared locations to current maps, and I took photos of big charts and closeups of properties so I could highlight them using some software I have. I am resting tomorrow, but will head out on Sunday when temps are going to be back to 80. Might try to walk down to Lake Ontario tomorrow as it is supposed to be a more reasonable 77. And I think I am going to have to turn on my electric heater tonight!!

Been fighting with Verizon. Called them several weeks ago and was assured I had text and data for Canada included in my plans for all three devices I have (one phone and two hotspots), but had a terrible time getting access yesterday and today. Guy yesterday fixed something and said no problems now. Guy today said I did not have data access with either of my mobile hotspots, so using my cell phone now. Filled out a complaint form and will try to get some real answers tomorrow. The guys I talked to had heavy accents and constantly had to go and look things up, so obviously they knew nothing!!! I was really mad at last one and hung up on him.

To prepare, I went online and made screen captures of all the stuff the verizon site had about my plans which DID say I had free calls, text, and data for all three lines!!!!!!!!!

I was called in to work at one of the shops this afternoon. Just when I was leaving at 7pm, the sky was getting dark to the south. Within minutes a big thunderstorm and heavy rain hit while I was driving home. The temps dropped from 115* down to 77* in just a short time, but the humidity surged way up. Lots of flooded intersections, wind blowing things across the streets and tons of lightning and thunder. Now the rain and wind has lessened but still quite the light show out there! The lightning keeps setting off my remote door bell and scaring the cats, so I disconnected it. I opened the door from the deck to the porch so the stray kitties can come in if things get too crazy out there. My kitties are safely inside the house.

People are starting to take this serious out here. No one, even the officials, knows what to expect. They say this is an unprecedented storm for this area. The track of it so far is right thru the desert here. They are saying up to 7 inches here with high winds. It will still be a Cat 1 when it comes across the border and then turn into a tropical storm thru here.

The worst of this storm will hit on Sunday and Monday. This is just a small precursor to it. Very nerve wracking!

No word from my agent today about the people interested in the house. Maybe they are gonna wait until after the storm to see if the house is still here and didn't float away!

Will update on both stories as I know more...

Sue, thanks for the suggestion. I have one very good reason for not picking the "almost ripe" tomatoes: There's no sight like hindsight.

Hada-coulda-shoulda-woulda. This cooking-on-the-vine thing had never happened to me before when growing tomatoes in my garden (I lived for nearly thirty years in the Sierra Foothills, where it is a lot cooler due to higher elevation).

This is my fourth "gardening-summer" here in the Central Valley, and it has been the hottest here that I remember by far, although it was a lot cooler today than yesterday. Topped out at "only" about 97*.
