Groundhog vs. chickens

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Groundhog vs. chickens

Postby Pooker » Sun Feb 02, 2025 10:56 am

Phil, the PA groundhog spring predictor, says lots of winter still left, but my friend's chickens have started laying eggs again which is usually an indicator that spring is coming early. We'll see which prediction is right. Either way, we have little choice in the matter. Of course, the chickens are Southern California hens, so what do they know about cold winters?

Good morning Evie and All, The sun is shining so a good day. Evie I follow a blog Little Mountain Ranch in Canada and her chickens are laying early too. Will be fun to see which animal is more accurate. lol. But as you said we have no choice in the matter. I would just like the wind to calm down so I can sit on the porch in the fresh air with my coat and hat. lol

Yes, I posted the other day that my friends chickens have been laying for a couple of weeks and they are sooo good. It has been a cold winter for us, temps down to single digits for nights during January, then we had an ice storm! She was very surprised to find eggs so early!

Good morning or afternoon to all. Surprise - I was already logged in. I did remember to say Rabbits this month. Forgot in January. I usually stick a post it on my bathroom mirror the night before. Bill has his eyelid surgery this Wednesday. Sure hope it goes well and he can see again. It has been about four months since the lid dropped and it really bothers him. His other eye is scarred from the macular degeneration so he only has peripheral vision in it. The eye that is drooping he gets shots in every three months and he can see pretty good out of it. Been a trying time for him.
Did get some good news from his heart doctor. All tests came out good, heart is strong and doctor took him off of the medication he prescribed about 9 months ago. He thinks it caused all the problems as the heart was beating too slow. Bill already feels better and has more energy.
I'm still keeping busy sewing pillow covers, working on Saint Patrick's Day covers now. Trying to use up material. Image
Fun to do.
Had to get our whole Dish TV system replaced last week. From part on the satellite dish to cables and all the receivers. One good thing I got a reduction in the monthly rate for the next two years thanks to the technician going to bat for us.

Got a chuckle reading your post Evie. We have a wrighter here who posts a column every Sunday on the latest happening in the area regarding bird sightings. His column today listed the spring birds arriving. Sounds like spring to me,! Lyn

Am feeling lazy today but I have a lot I need to get done today, so I need to get busy soon! My MN brother and SIL are coming into town tomorrow afternoon and I need to get this place looking presentable when they come by to see my trailer.

I don't want spring/summer to get here too soon, since I live in the desert!

Here are some pics of what I did this weekend...

The three gourd shards with resin designs...

and the alcohol ink gourd project...(there is metallic gold on this but is hard to see without direct light.)

And one pic of Romeow checking out my big TV screen...

Barbie, I really love the gourd shards. That's different. As to spring, my sinuses and headaches are having one of their worst ever springs, so I say spring has hit south Texas. TY and I had good walk this morning but I've had no energy to do much since.

You did a great job Barbie. Those are beautiful. Do you have room to hang those somewhere? I would love to learn that skill. Have fun.

I sure hope we don't have anymore freezes. I would like to use an outside faucet but just don't want to unwrap one. It was 81 today but as soon as the sun starts going down the temperature drops fast. I pruned three rose bushes and I have the scars to prove it. lol I finally went in and found some gloves. Hauled two wagon loads of limbs to the burn cage. I need to burn some trash so I will have room for more limbs. Now I need to go to Lowe's and get some mulch.

I also changed the water filters under the sink. Any time I have to get on my knees to do anything that's a challenge. The new filters were $54 and I sure don't remember them being that expensive.

Barbie, your resin designs are pretty. You should put some cartoons on for Romeow to watch.

Carol, that's a cute pillow. I hope Bill's surgery helps. I think my dad had that surgery.

I am wondering if my neighbor is going to get more chickens. He has always had some kind of birds, chickens, guineas, ducks or turkeys. They were going on a two week trip for Christmas and New Years and he got rid of all the birds.

I vote for the chickens because they actually DO something to show spring is coming. :D

Changed my bed and washed sheets and towels. The laundry room is tiny, but at least it is right across the street from me, so very handy. Yesterday I did two big loads--two weeks worth of clothing. I'm going to be here another 10 days, so I'll do laundry just before I leave here.

Not much else going on, EXCEPT it was 75 degrees today, and sunny!!!!!!! Almost unbelievable. It's been over 5 weeks since I was in Borrego Springs in the desert in Southern California and it was warm enough to sit outside. Since then, it has been rainy and cold and rainy and even colder. Supposed to be 74 for next two days then dropping down to 71 and finally into high 60s.

Have any of you checked your state's unclaimed property sites? I did so, and while I did not any money for myself in the several states I checked, I did find over $1,500 of my aunt's so I am in the process of filling out the forms and applying for the money for her estate. Not a lot when it gets divided up among six people, but it will pay for a couple of pizzas and some groceries for me and each of the others. Apparently the money came from Southern Bell for overpayment a few years ago. Anyway, most of the amounts listed for people are quite small, like $20 or a bit more, it is certainly free money and this time I hit the jackpot.

I think it was a normal Sunday went to church home ate some avocado toast read scriptures and nap... granddaughter was in charge of supper she did a good job... made cheesy loaded baked potato soup although the potatoes weren't baked.... still very good good enough that I took down the recipe... Tuesday night I am making butter chicken looking forward to it... my son in law got word that his father is "actively dying" not a term I had heard until hospice told me that when mom was close to dying... wonder if it's a hospice term? his dad lives in one of the Carolina's never remember which. so he is having to make a decision whether to go out soon and use up his 1 week leave or wait... he wants to go help sister but at the same time guess he has to decide what is best...for him and his sister... hard call I do know that I was glad that my brother's decided to come to Jackson and stay close by so when I did call them they had the opportunity to get there really fast... of course she was already gone but they still were there...
I laughed hearing that the prediction was 6 more weeks it's always 6 more weeks for regardless what he says... now if the chickens in Idaho were laying eggs I'd start to take notice... they did get snow in Jackson and the pass is closed tomorrow for avalanche control one road was closed today for the same purpose not a well used road though
think I'll say night you all have a great day

I didn't get going until after noon. I took my laundry to the laundry room at the clubhouse and got that started, put my trash in the dumpster, and went to Costco to get propane. That place is insane on Sundays! :o One lady wanted to get out of the parking lot so bad that she was gonna ram my car in the side. I wasn't able to move because all the cars ahead of me were trying to get to the gas station lane. I She kept moving closer to my car and I was sure she was gonna hit me! I finally went around the car in front of me, into the oncoming lane and got over to the propane area on the wrong side of the parking lot road! What a mess! Then I realized I forgot my Costco card and had to run back home for that. Finally got home and asked the guy across the street to help me put the propane bottle up on the A-frame tongue for me. He is kind of a grouchy guy (not the same guy who helped me before). He decided it would be better to just leave the tank on the ground and hook it up there. What ever :? . Got my tanks dumped, moved my picnic table to another spot and set up my propane fire pit where that was, and then went to get my laundry and put that away. Ate dinner and then was feeling done for the day! Didn't get anything done inside my place. I will spend tomorrow working on that.

My brother's friend, Ray, texted me tonight and said he wants to see me tomorrow and maybe go for a hike. I told him I wouldn't be available until around 4 and suggested a place close to my brother's we can go for a short hike. I am wondering how personal the conversation is gonna get when no one else is around? He really seems to have an interest in me. Not sure how I feel about that. :?

The cats have the zoomies tonight. The whole trailer shakes when they chase each other around!

Sandi, to answer your question...the gourd shards are only about 2 inches x 3 inches, so I am sure I can find a place to hang/display them in here.
