A few years ago, while I was still working, but not quite in my 70s, I had just had knee replacement surgery when i got the letter about jury duty. I had already postponed jury duty once, so I figured I'd go in and it would just be one day of sitting around and I'd be done. Except, it turned out to be a real trial that involved child abuse of some kind. They had a huge jury pool for this trial and were taking a long time to go through selection, so it went to a second day. After sitting on hard chairs and not being able to prop my leg up, my knee was really bothering me. I had brought in my bottle of Vicodin on the second day, and told the bailiff that my leg was bothering me and I had to take pain meds. The judge looked at the bottle and at my leg, and sent me home, so codeine-level pain pills also work. Plus, it was really dumb of me to go in only about 5 weeks after my surgery!!!!
Enjoyed meeting my niece and her mother, my ex-sister-in-law for lunch at the Cherry Festival today. I took one of the free shuttles in and back, so no trouble parking. It stopped right out in front of state park. Bought myself a Cherry Festival t-shirt and a heavy white zip-up sweatshirt. I had a cheap one that had tiny pockets so could not even put my cell phone or camera in them, and tossed it out several months ago. And my sons have been buying me hoodies, which unless they are very big, I cannot get on and take off easily because of my left shoulder. I finally told them thanks, but I need things I can zip up. This more expensive sweatshirt has big pockets and is really heavy for cold days--and there should be a lot of them in Canada in August and September!!
My niece is my deceased brother's daughter. He lied, cheated, drank, and used drugs and died about four years ago. His daughter has always missed him and thought he was the best dad ever, but she does not know all that he did, like scamming my parents for money because he told them if he did not pay child support, my SIL would beat their grandchildren. This was a big lie, and he never gave her the money--kept it himself. Did a lot of things to blame me and my parents for his drinking, and other stuff, so I hate to even think about it, but she is the only niece I have and I was the only person from my part of the family there, so I was glad to drive up here. Had a good time at the graduation party and today. Great-niece has PKU, and if you know anything about it, it makes a diabetic diet look easy. Almost any protein can cause brain damage, so she eats mostly fruit, rice, and low protein prescription foods. She cannot eat meat, fish, eggs, beans, peas, nuts, and has had to limit bread and potatoes. She has to drink a special protein drink four times a day and measure all food, However, she is on a new injectable treatment that is enabling her to eat a more normal diet. She is going away to college, so will have to monitor things and dorm will have to provide special meals for her. Keeping our fingers crossed she behaves herself!!!
