Sunny Saturday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Sunny Saturday

Postby Colliemom » Sat Nov 11, 2023 9:27 am

Sunny at the moment that is. Whether it remains that way, we shall see. Rain/snow showers supposed to be around. Had a few yesterday, so but most of the day was dry. Shelia, you are right about my weather paralleling yours. And yep, come Thanksgiving anything goes. I got snowed out of having dinner with my cousin last year. Wasn’t the first time Weather has messed up Thanksgiving and won’t be the last.

BJ, did you find what you wanted to know about taconite pellets? Many people who don’t live near the Great Lakes are aware of the cargoes that are carried aboard the ships out there. Thry are called lakers.. Ore, cement, wheat, coal, salt, oil, etc. Are just a few. The cars we drive, the steel framework in buildings and other things made of metal , the cereal and bread on our breakfast table, the salt that melts the ice on the northern state's roads in winter, the cement in driveways and house foundations come from those ship holds. Over 200 Mi,lion tons of cargo is moved to and from 63 ports. That doesn’t include the cargoes delivered or hauled out on ocean gong ships from around d the world. This was the Edmund Fitzgerald, the ship behind the song and the last ship to have been sunk in modern tines. She lies broken in two, 550 feet down in Lake Superior. There are a lot of pictures of the wreck online and very eerie.

Barbie, sorry nothing came of the look-see yesterday, but somebody will come along. Everybody has their preferences. Mine was on the market for about a month before it sold. But I had listed it before and took it off from lack of interest and slow market. Beth, my two furkids don’t like rain either, but they will go walking in a light drizzle. Thty LOVE the snow though. So do I as I don’t get wet in that, LOL.
Martha, glad you are out camping again for a bit. Judy, sounds like you are cooking up a storm, making jam. Anita, good luck with the parking issue.

Got errands run yesterday and looked at Ryobi blowers. Velda, do you know what model you have? What its air speed and CFM are? I have a lot f leaves here of course and need power to move them, especially when they are wet. But a battery ine would work n my drive, walks, deck and May e some minor leaf blowing. Holiday sales are starting and I grabbed a pack of two batteries yesterday, so I now have 6 batteries to power my drills, reciprocating saw and weed whipper. I was gong to wait till spring to get a new blower, but with the nice weather we have coming, might get it now, so I can do so pme cleanup of the oak leaves coming down.

Okay, enough talk about nothing here. Tine to move along. Have a great day.

Good morning. Today started out chilly with temps in the high 30’s and gray but finally the sun has made an appearance and it’s a balmy 45! Yesterday I finally managed to mow/mulch the backyard. Didn’t work as well as I had hoped but it did a fair job and got rid of lots of the leaves in the yard. Now I need to get the edges where the mower doesn’t get. The one and only tree in my yard is still hanging onto its leaves. Strange considering the winds we’ve had. Barbie, sorry about the showing yesterday but someone will step up and it’ll be perfect for them. Sue, interesting information of the lakes. Got word yesterday that GD had her first laser treatment and will go back in two weeks for the second. Plus they measured her for the compression garments she’ll need to wear. She continues with PT and OT during the week. It’s been about 6 weeks since she came home. Judy, the cherry jam still sounds so good to me.Buddy continues to amaze me with his response to my commands. I actually have had him heeling off leash too. Just a little bit in the yard, we’re not ready for the wide open spaces yet! But his recall is really improving too. I think we’re settling into an understanding now that he’s home. Trainer said it would take a couple of weeks for us to get in sync and that seems to be the case. I just started not having a leash on him all the time in a the house since he’s responding so well to me. Leash work now is mostly outside with some inside. So now I suppose I should get back outside and bag up some more leaves! I need to probably get another battery for my Kobalt blower since the battery doesn’t last very long. But I have a hard time swallowing the prices on them and since I don’t really use it that much it seems crazy. Luckily I do have an electric blower that I can fall back on and with the extension cord I can move all over the yard. I spoke to soon, the sun is gone again! Think it’s going to be that kind of day! Hope you all have a good day and maybe find something fun to do.

Sharon, keep an eye on the battery prices. This time of year, manufactures do holiday specials. It’s when I have picked up my tools and batteries. In fact, I just added two more Ryobi batteries to my collection yesterday as I mentioned.

Good morning. Not too chilly here today but was foggy and cloudy. Now just mainly cloudy with some sun peeking in and out. High will be 51. Getting ready to do some painting in my bathroom. I need to prep the VOG wall after I wash everything down well. I have a bit of peeling to fix on it as when my old tub and shower were taken out it tore some of it so been looking to see what I need to fix that. VOG walls were really common in mobile homes of the 70 and 80's. Mine is a 1988 They are called Vinyl on Gypsum. Light weight was one reason to use them. They are panels with a batten between the seams. I plan on taking the batten off and filling the seams. Then want to paint with a light texture paint as it is very forgiving of imperfections. I will practice in my bathroom before I branch out to other areas ha ha
Have a fridge full of leftovers to eat so no big food prep. Have to foodsaver my meat today and get it in the freezer. Paid my tax bill today UGH BUT it is only a third of what I paid before the fire so I need not complain. Only went up $15 from last year.
I have all electric tools except for my mini saw it is battery and I have 2 batteries for it and it works well. I dont do well with batteries........and to buy new batteries sometimes is almost as expensive as a new one. My drill is battery however and I also have 2 batteries for it. My outside equipment is mostly electric. But I have a small yard to keep up and outlets all over outside so it works well for me. Nothing much else going on here. Henry is busy doing my bedroom and bathroom so will swiffer the bathroom floor when he is done. I have to say using my Henry sure does cut down on the dog hair. Emma is getting her winter coat now so is pretty much done with the big shedding but she sheds all year Eh it is what it is. Tomorrow I will vacuum the furniture but she doesnt get up on it much so that wont take any time at all. Henry cannot climb darn it.
Was awake again at 4am. Dang this time change seems to have me way off schedule and normally just give me a couple of days and I am back at it. Oh well no real issues just maybe need to stay up a bit later at night, we will see if that works.

Had a horrible morning. Woke up about 5:30 am and had IBS symptoms (aka diarrhea and gas pains) until 9 am. Finally went back to sleep until noon and feel much better. While this used to happen a lot more often, at least it happens only once every week or two, but I think I need to do a better job of taking the Welchol.

Also, changed my bed and got clothes and bedding ready for laundry, so now that I have eaten, I need to head to laundry room--not too far away, luckily. Rained last night and sunny.

And I really wish the recipes for jam called for so many cups or even pounds of crushed fruit. Even if they call for regular cups, some fruits are bigger than others and take more space, like large strawberries versus blueberries. The other problem was that almost no recipes listed cherries. Most used strawberries as an example, and the ones that listed cherries, assumed that amount was before you pitted them.

I ended up with 8 half-pint jars of jam, but only 7 fit into my canner for the water bath, so the last one will have to be refrigerator jam! Tastes great. I like the sweet-tart flavor over the overly sweet taste of most fruits.

Finally, Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot died last may, but here is his official version of the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It became a hit for many years because of the way it tells the story. https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJ ... e&ie=UTF-8

BJ, I'm glad you'll be adding your review. As a person with a small head, I've never had an audiologist have any problems because of it. But to even try to use that as an excuse, especially when not true, would say she's never worked with children. So many red flags.

Barbie, I can see both points about the porch, but in that area with the winds, etc, I think it's better enclosed. That said, she's going to have to decide for herself and unfortunately it's not in your favor. Hopefully the right person comes along soon. Did you get a flyer into the room where she was looking?

Another rainy day but there were a few longer dry spells to get Ty out. We'll have more of the same tomorrow and into Monday. I go back into Mexico for my final crown Monday so I'm hoping the rain will at least be light at that time. Sometime Monday afternoon it should be over and our temps should head back to normal.

I had other things to say, but without going back and reading everything, in at a loss. But I always enjoy reading what everyone posts.

Had a nice visit with Laura on her way back home from her Mom's. Short but always nice to talk in person vs the phone but I will take both. Finished dusting and cleaning the bedroom and bathroom after she left. Then took a shower and put on my comfy sweats, made a Mocha and just relaxed. I dont have anywhere I have to go tomorrow so that is a plus. In fact I dont have to go anywhere until Friday and that will be to the eye doc. I will make sure I have any needed groceries before next week. I am not getting in that Thanksgiving mess at the stores LOL I really hate the holidays LOL they mess up my routine anytime I need to go out. So much traffic, long lines at the stores even if I only need 2 or 3 things. I do like the holiday light and decorations. I will put my lights up again this year AFTER Thanksgiving. The neighbors asked me over for Thanksgiving dinner but I declined. I went one year and it was fine but I will just stay home here in peace and quiet.

Karen, thanks, I just remembered you posting about not wanting to shop close to Thanksgiving. So I just figured out what I want to make for our Thanksgiving dinner here and will go check the sign up sheet and hopefully be able to sign up for either appetizer or dessert tomorrow. I already put what I need in my shopping cart, so then I can place the order probably for this Wed or Thur and not have to go to the store at all the following week.

I at least didn't miss the alarm today instead just kept snoozing my problem is staying out in the living room till 12 instead of 11 which puts everything I do once I get to my room an hour off so I've been going to sleep a lot later than I am prone to do :?
went to the store my 2nd born and her husband is coming for supper and I think dd#3 as well... not sure but she will be here as she is going to work in the office a day or two ... I am just not sure if she will be here in time for supper..
planned on using some meat from the freezer for stew but looked at it and decided that it looked freezer burned then noticed that the packaging had torn... normally I put it in a zip lock this time I didn't just stuck it in the freezer.. I need to remember not to do that I have a the term has gone out of my mind what you use Karen to take care of your meat before freezing it... but it's in the trailer in an area that I can't get to with the slides in...there are days when I wish I had it...
I've been trying to remember where I read something at the town of Paradise CA finally remember the reports that you can find on weather the one on the phone it was saying that that may not be it but if not I can't figure out what it was.. anyway where ever I read it was saying that the town is starting to rebuild some homes and businesses... gave a percentage of what it was up to but I didn't retain it that well...
sorry Barbie that they wanted something a bit different it will happen one day when you least expect it
so glad to hear news of your gd Sharon... hopefully she will continue improving... and sounds like Buddy is doing great as well..

It's been a quiet Veterans day here. Got my walking in amd a few chores done. Learned how to share a video with Amazon Customer Service---caught on video, a delivery guy using a package as a frisbee! Knew package arrived this morning, but never heard feet on deck and package in odd place. Checked camera and saw package sail over the railing, as driver stood down on walkway. Good thing it was an unbreakable item in that bubble envelope, not the small glass bottle that had been in a same type bubble envelope a few days ago! Or my deck would have smelled of chocolate Stevia for a while! Got chatting with Amazon customer service and she asked if I could share the video. As I told her, I'd never even tried before. But, I went to Ring, found the video and the share button and in under a minute, she replied back Yes, she got it and it was perfect to send to shipping department! I would not want to be in the drivers shoes, when his supervisor plays it for him to explain!
Judy- I have had IBS for probably over 25 years. Once I got into researching, I did an elimination process, and discovered several foods that are my triggers. Once I completely eliminated them, my IBS has been in remission. Since around 2017. I won't tell you which foods, because that's different for each person. I will tell you it's worth it to not have to take any RX for it, but more so, it's worth it not to have to worry every time I ate about leaving the house. I gave up foods I enjoy, because I feel better and no longer have to time my meals with when I leave the house. Having been off those foods over 6 years,I can now eat a small amount occasionally, with minimal distress. But I know if I added them back on weekly basis, I'd be back to where I was, so I choose not to make myself uncomfortable.
I had a good day BP wise, and believe we are getting whatever this is, tamed. Reducing Hydralazine on most days by 50 mg on 2-3 of the doses, has me feeling physically better. For that I'm grateful.
We may have rain over the next week, or not. As they say, the weather models keep shifting. I do hope we get a good dousing, we need it.
I've had several hearing tests too, and never painful. That person needs reporting to who ever supervises her work! Unacceptable!
Have a good Sunday everyone.

Sheila, I live about 45 miles from Paradise, so I got a lot of ashfall and smoke from the fire, which happened in 2018.

Most of the town was pretty much burned to the ground. It took a year (or more, I forget) for all of the chemically hazardous debris from the burned structures to be removed before the rebuilding could even begin.

And it goes on. And will continue for quite a few years more, probably.

One of the problems is that all of the burned chaparral and trees will eventually grow back, new structures will be built - but the road in and out of this Sierra foothills town has not substantially been improved. The upshot is that, eventually, fire will come again.

It will again be a beautiful place, once the re-build has been completed and the last vestiges of the burned trees and brush have regrown and turned green. And once it is again green and beautiful, people will forget the fire.

But fire will come again. It is a fact of life in California. We ignore this at our peril.

One wonders what might happen after the next fire. Many insurers have left or are leaving California due to the ever-increasing risk of wildfire. Without insurance, people will be unable to rebuild.

Next time.

Anne, all very good points! Florida is similar as far as insurance companies not wanting to insure homes/businesses near the coast due to the high risk of hurricanes and flooding. It is a losing proposition for them financially.
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
