Monarchs that come down from west of the Rockies, winter in California and Mexico. Monarchs that come down from east of the Rockies, winter in Florida and other southern states. One generation flies all the way south for the winter, breeds, lays eggs and dies. Then it takes 3 generations to make it back north to where their relatives came from.

I've visited the butterfly grove up north of here at least 3-4 times and it is the most awesome sight to see trees totally covered by them! One year they didn't show up, but there were a dozen or so hearty ones flitting here and there. Guess they were late that year.
