Saturday post-shaker!

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Saturday post-shaker!

Postby BarbaraRose » Sat Jul 06, 2019 10:35 am

I definitely felt the earthquake last night! It was downgraded at first from 7.1 to 6.9 but then upgraded back to a 7.1 which is official now.
I was sitting on the couch and all of a sudden felt the house moving back and forth! The swag lamp over the kitchen table starting swinging. At first I just sat there not sure what to do but then got up and stood by the front entryway away from windows. Once it stopped (didn't last too long luckily!), I went across the street to check on my elderly neighbor. She was fine and was in her front entryway too.

Luckily, nothing fell off the shelves but definitely need to get some earthquake putty for some of my nic nacs, and get all those wine glasses out of the cupboards and to the thrift store. That would have been a huge mess if all those had come down!

Lola seemed concerned but not overly upset so that was good.

I feel so bad for those in Ridgecrest with all the damage there and the constant aftershocks going on. They are saying there could be aftershocks for months, maybe even years there! Luckily, I haven't heard of any serious injuries and gratefully no deaths!

So, anyways, today I am planning to head to LA (Glendale) to look at that little trailer. Will be heading out shortly since it is a little over 2 hour drive.

Hope you all have a good day!

Good luck with the trailer, Barbie. I hope it is just what you have in mind.

Don't know if you have Earthquake insurance on your house or not, but you might consider getting it if you don't. Earthquake insurance generally is not too expensive. Earthquake insurance is separate from your Homeowner's Insurance.

Homeowner's insurance generally doesn't cover earthquake damage, so if your home was damaged in an earthquake, you might be out of luck if you only have Homeowner's insurance.

Thanks Ann. I do have earthquake insurance. That was a must, being so close to the San Andreas fault. I am not sure I have earthquake bracing under the house tho so am going to get that checked and done if needed. After seeing a mobile home that fell over up in Ridgecrest, I don't want that to happen to mine. I was told that our homes are still sitting on the wheels underneath with some of the air out of the tires so that is supposed to help.

Need to get my earthquake kit put together tho.

Instead of museum putty, get the clear gel, like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ready-America-33 ... way&sr=8-1

My son and his wife use it to stick down their wine glasses and anything else on shelves. They even used it to secure a pair of antique hurricane oil lamps that belonged to her grandmother. They have ridden out two Napa earthquakes sitting on their fireplace mantle with no damage! Their wine glasses in kitchen cupboards survived also, but you might want to wrap yours in a little bubble wrap or tissue paper and put them in a box in your cupboard. Two warnings, this stuff is like silly putty in that it runs down walls, so use it on flat places only. Also, don't get it on your clothing. If you do, use a strong spot remover and rub it to remove the spot.

One thing my kids have had problems with are pictures on walls that have glass in the frames. Make sure they are really secured to walls. Those were the only things damaged in the last two earthquakes at their house, other than the cement top fell off their water fountain and broke.

Also, I use the museum gel to fasten down the small clock in my bedroom and another clock on my kitchen counter. I also use it to fasten my little Zuni fetishes and some other tiny things I have accumulated in an open shadow box. So far, nothing has fallen while I am driving, which is a lot more movement than in an earthquake!

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look for that. The wine glasses will be going to a thrift store soon. I have used the velcro command strips to hold things on the walls and that works good.

I bought the trailer that I looked at today. I love it! However I had a small accident on the way home with it. No major damage other than my nerves. Will tell more about it tomorrow.

I didn't feel the first quake, but I definitely felt the 7.1. If we had to have such a large one, it happened in a better area than near one of our large cities. Folks who live in the Ridgecrest area don't feel so lucky, I'm sure. Nerves are sure rattled when you keep getting thousands of aftershocks!

I don't find earthquake insurance inexpensive. My estimate for earthquake coverage for my mobilhome a few years ago was much too expensive for me - would double my annual premium plus deductible would be 10% of the house value, 10% for personal property damage (furniture, etc) and another 10% for other structures! I wouldn't even be able to afford the deductibles without getting a loan. One good thing about mobilehomes, though, is that they are built for going down the road to be delivered, so they twist and turn, shake, rattle and roll a little better than a stick house might do.

Sorry for your trailer emergency, Barbie. How scary for you. We have so many of those dips for rain drainage here, too, and when I first moved in I tried all the ways in and out of the neighborhood to see which route would work without bottoming out. Amazing how few routes actually work okay! I did manage to find a way that only had a couple of shallow dips. Hopefully you will find a way, too. Pooker

Pooker, Yes, that is what I hit. It is a really bad one, most around here aren't too bad. Everyone slows down for that one. I drove by there this morning and could see the gouges in the pavement where the jack hit the ground. I also have a couple small dents in the back of my Jeep when it came forward and hit my car. Nothing obvious tho. Good thing I was going real slow!

Lyn, who won what??
