head napa cabbage
1 bunch minced green onions
1/3 cup butter
1 (3 ounce) package ramen noodles, broken
2 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 cup slivered almonds
1/4 cup cider vinegar
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup white sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce

My version:

Bag of cabbage slaw (I like the fine shredded like angle hair if I can find it but any is good)
Green onions chop and add to cabbage
Put in frig

half or less stick of butter
bag of ramen noodles break them up in tiny pieces (I just beat the bag on the corner of the cabinet... takes all the anger out!)
1 cup or more sliced almonds
2 T sesame seeds (went crazy when Wendy and Sarah were here did not have any!!)
brown in frying pan

1/4 c vinegar
2 T soy sauce
1/4 c (more or less) vegetable oil
1/4 c (more or less) sugar
bring to a boil just to melt the sugar

when ready to serve mix all three mixtures and serve...

Ohhhh...I made this too and just love it. About the only difference is that I use sunflower nuts rather than the sesame seeds.

Oh that sounds so good - Mitch - queen of dissecting recipes - what is the sugar content on this? Me thinks I don't dare make it. With that much sugar and the butter and oil - my arteries and triglycerides would be in dire straits (not that what I'm giving them aren't doing that anyway!).

Beth notice when I make it I use less butter, oil and sugar... it tastes just as good with less... or you could use sugar substitute...
The butter to brown the crunchies gives them a golden brown and brings out their flavor...

Also keep in mind that this makes about 6 servings, maybe 8 if not real hungary..

Me, too! I ran my version of pretty much the same thing - not much better!

I don't think the flavor packet from the noodles are used in this. (I have several reciepes that call for the noodles and discard the flavor packet). That would at least take a lot of the sodium out.

So, when I put those numbers together earlier, I had to take out a package of Ramen Noodles. If you take out the packet (I'm assuming no, or very little, sodium in the noodles themselves), you'd get rid of 830mg of sodium (brings it down to 550mg per serving)! (I had to dig the wrapper out of the trash because when I took it out to read the nutrition facts, I knew I just had to have it for lunch...my bad.)

ON EDIT: I had to go look up my version...

Oriental Salad

DRESSING:

4 1/2 tbsp. vinegar
3 tbsp. sugar
1/2 c. oil
Salt and pepper
Flavor packet from Top Ramen noodles (chicken flavor)

SALAD:

1 pkg. cole slaw mix
1/2 c. toasted almonds
1/2 c. green onions
3 tbsp. sesame seeds
1 pkg. dry Top Ramen noodles, crushed

This salad needs to be put together at the last minute to make sure that everything is crunchy. Toss the salad ingredients first and then toss with the dressing. Serve immediately.

I don't have to worry about sodium - although I am careful about using salt. While I love those salads, rarely eat them - I prefer to get my unhealthy sugar and fats from the really bad cakes, pies and ice creams. So, will have to wait till someone makes this for a gtg and get my fill then :)

Was so hoping Mitch would give better numbers on your version - probably shouldn't have asked

Oh my arteries, my blood pressure, my heart! I just knew with all the raves, that it would be bad for me!

Neat website you found to do that Mitch!
