Deep Dish Pizza Casserole Crock Pot Style

1 pound lean ground beef
1 small onion, diced
1 garlic clove, minced
1 (1.5) ounce packet of spaghetti mix (if using store-bought, look out for hidden gluten.
I like the McCormick brand. You can also make your own using the recipe below)
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1/2 cup water

for puffy topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour (I use Pamela's Baking Mix as my AP flour)
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
20 pepperoni slices
1/2 cup sliced olives, optional

Homemade Spaghetti Sauce Mix
yields 1 packet

1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon dried minced onion
1 tablespoon parsley flakes
1 teaspoon granulated white sugar
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons green pepper flakes
3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

The Directions.

Use a 4 quart slow cooker (if you only have a 6, that's okay, it will just cook faster.
Check it after 3 hours on high.)

In a very large skillet, brown beef, onion, and garlic on the stove top. Drain fat, and add
spaghetti sauce mix, oregano, tomato sauce, and water. Stir over low heat until tiny
bubbles appear. Remove from heat and scoop into the slow cooker (you might want to
spray it with cooking spray).

In a mixing bowl, combine the ingredients for your puffy topping: flour, milk, eggs, and
cheese. Pour evenly over the top. Place pepperoni slices and olives on top of the
topping.

Zeee this is not the same as a deep dish pizza but close enough to enjoy.. Let me know how you like
this one too Enclosing picture of how mine came out

Well, being the anal one, I just ran the numbers. Sure ya wanna know?

This is for the whole recipe, and does not include the onion or the spaghetti mix (sodium),
but does include part-skim mozzarella cheese, lean ground beef, and whole milk:

2,939 calories
4,899 mg sodium
183 g fat

ON EDIT: This would be delicious in a camping DO, too!

Karen, If you take a spoonful you'll be ok  In fact I'm sure there are many many many
spoonfuls . Mitch.. hide them numbers.. but wait we can lighten it up.. with say.. Ground Turkey.. Healthy choice sauce
turkey Pepporoni.. you get the picture.. And then again.. Moderation.. anything (well almost anything) in Moderation..

Maybe Karen, skip (did I say that ) a few glasses of wine... that will help cutting down on the calories...

God Bless Ya

Sounds delicious! Just wondering if anyone here has ever used the crockpot plastic liners? Wondering if they work good. Would sure save on cleaning afterward!

Barbie.... They work fantastic.. have used them since they first came out and even before.. Yes, I created my own..well sorta.. I used the Reynolds bags that you baked in and they worked well ..till the others came out..

In fact a long time ago that subject was brought up.. one of the history buffs will have to bring it up.. my brain is kind of fried at the moment and I'm ready to hit the sack..

I have a few more recipes that I just got in and I'll post some tomorrow.. Lord willin..

Enjoy..

Will have to try this real soon. I keep the crockpot liners in the drawer with my crockpot, so will definitely use that.

I made this for dinner tonight and it was just great! I did tweak the recipe, though. I added one pound of sweet Italian sausage to the ground beef and fried them together. I added extra garlic, garlic powder, crushed red pepper and Italian seasoning to the meat mixture. I also added garlic powder, oregano & Italian seasoning to the batter. This will be a keeper in our house! Thanks Barb Zee!!!!!
