..I learned a nifty little trick for steel cut oats over on rv.net.
Someone said to put the oats in a thermos (like a wide-mouth food thermos) and pour boiling water on them. Leave them overnight and voila - ready to eat for breakfast.
I tried it yesterday at 10:00 AM, forgot I had done it until this morning. The oatmeal wasn't at all warm (duh

), but it was cooked perfectly. I have found that even on low, overnight in a slow cooker makes it too mushy for my taste.
That's my tip du jour.

Thanks for the tip, sounds like a good solution.
I wonder if this would work with brown rice too? I have had a problem getting it to cook.

When we first started talking about the steel cut oats I bought some to try. After eating them for several days I started having cramps and pain in my lower intestine area. I quit eating them and the pain went away. I don't know if they were too much roughage for me or something else was going on. I may try them again sometime when I feel brave.

That sounds like a great tip. Myself, I love steel-cut oats.

Sure sounds like too much fiber to me. Do you eat a lot of fiber? My husband wouldn't recognize fiber if a bowl of bran jumped up and slapped him in the face.
Should drink a lot of water, too. That helps move it through your system.

I usually eat more salad and vegetables than hot cereal but I have never had a problem with regular oat meal. I liked the steel cut oats so will try them again sometime.

I eat the steel cut oats but get the instant kind. No problem with any gas for me.

I don't care if they are steel-cut oats or hatchet-cut oats-----as a cereal they are just ACK for me! However, I discovered, by brain-fog accident, that the banana-flavored instant packaged version of oatmeal, with walnuts I added, when allowed to cook in a microwave as directed and then forgotten for a day of school, turns into a most wonderful cool pudding! So now, it's a dessert for me! I haven't tried any flavor other than the banana as yet, however! I just gritted my teeth when I discovered it still lurking in the microwave at suppertime, tried it, topped it with fat-free cool whip, a new dessert was born!
