Quick and NOT SO healthy pizza

(On Edit)Quick and NOT SO Healthy Pizza :lol:

I started with whole wheat flat bread for crust. ½ slice fits nicely in my mini toaster oven in the rv.

Spread with a little pizza sauce. I froze the remaining sauce in an ice cube tray and put the frozen cubes in a ziplock in my freezer. One thawed cube is just about right for a pizza.

Add whatever veggies you like and have on hand. I used chopped fresh spinach and broccoli slaw here. Good way to use leftovers too.

Top with fat-free mozzarella cheese. Add meat if desired. I used a little turkey pepperoni. Another place to use leftovers.

Bake 10 minutes in toaster oven at 350* or until cheese is melted and bread is crispy.

definately a keeper, and I like the idea of freezing the sauce into cubes, think
I'll do that with my spaghetti sauce so I don't waste so much by leaving a half a
jar in the fridge door forever. Come to think of it, I have a package of flatbread
in the freezer just waiting for me to do something with it.

OK, healthy and pizza in the same sentence? I'm afraid I still want sausage, cheese and sauce. I just can't get my brain around "vegetables" and "pizza" together in my mind.

Well Liz... I use the Turkey pepperoni...but dear can't do the plastic cheese..No .. it can't pass my lips..beside it can't be really healthy..(you will love this one)...Dr OZ says.. NO NO to process cheese..and this is if ya read the ingredients sure ain't real hahaha..but now I'll do the real cheese just a little is better than none...and love the flat breads.. very tasty... as for the sauce.. or gravy.. been using ice trays for ages..even do the chicken broth and beef broth the same way.. waste not want not..ooooooh wait is that something biblical...ooooooooooooooooooh yeah...smokin :)

Anyway looks good and as always.. Liz is sharing...yoooooooooo hoooooooooooo

Okay, question on the cheese thing. Is it processed because it's already grated? If you buy a block of cheese (or round of it, as is the case with mozarella) and then grate it does that make it not processed? Going to the grocery store tomorrow and want to know.

Another option for the bread might be those new "sandwich thins". They're smaller, but one whole is only 100 calories and they toast up real nicely. In fact you could toast them first, add your toppings, and then nuke them for 30 seconds or so to melt the cheese.

I like your idea though, Liz. Might just have to try it -- processed cheese and all! ;)

Laura, when you buy cheese that is already grated, they coat it with something like flour or starch so that it doesn't stick together. I know this, but still buy it already grated too! :D We've tried those Sandwich round thingies and really like them, like you said they are 100 calories for both sides together and regular bread starts at 70 calories a slice.

Laura....I'll try to give a quick watered down lesson on cheese..but I'm pulling information from the catacombs of my brain! It's been over 10 years since I've taught food and nutrition classes.

Natural cheese is made by age old methods. Milk from any animal (normally cow or goat) with any fat content is separated into curds(solids) and whey (liquid). Natural cheese are ripened or unriped. Ricotta and cottage cheese are unriped. In ripened cheeses the curds are packed into forms and aged or ripened. The ripening period determines the flavor hence words like mild/sharp on Cheddar cheese. Sharp meaning it's been aged longer. Sometimes the words soft and hard are used. When you see a hunk of parmesean cheese that you have to grate yourself...that's natural..as would be Edam or Gouda in a wax covering, Bleu and Roquefort. They are also sold in the sliced, shredded, crumbled or grated form. Vickie is absolutely correct about shredded cheeses being coated to prevent them from clumping together and they used cellulose plant products like corn or potato starch.

Processed cheeses are made from both unaged and aged natural cheeses and liquid ingredients (milk or whey) that are blended together and pastuerized so no further ripening will occur. It is not imitation. One of the reasons for processed cheeses is quality standards and the consumer can be assured that the product will taste the same everytime they purchase it. American cheese is a processed cheese...so is the government commodity cheese (do they still have that stuff?) Processed cheeses are divided into categories depending on the water content...Foods and Spreads...spreads have a higher water content. If you buy Swiss cheese that is individually wrapped with no holes in it..it's processed and most likely a "food". Velveeta and Cheese Whiz are spreads. Cheese that has had ingredients such as pepperoni, jalepeno peppers, olives added are processed cheeses because if those ingredients were added to natural cheeses at the beginning of the cheese making process they would cause spoilage.

There are imitation cheeses...lets not go there. :P

What is the H am I doing talking about cheese at 7:00 on a Sunday morning...oh that's right...the dog had to go out and I couldn't get back to sleep...and now she's in bed sawing logs and I'm wide awake. :roll:

Pat, Loved the lesson in cheeses..and since I'm a retired bio chemist...NO you do not want to talk about the Imitation cheeses which
there are many... YUCKO... and truly are "Plastic"... just think if there is such a thing as reincarnation.. we all may come back as a TOY..hahaha Tonka I hope..we'd get used more than just put on a shelf..hahaha..

Now as to the facts... in my home anyway.. I do not use "Fat Free" products.. A little of the real deal is much more worth the effort..but however, I have
blended it with Tofu.. which by the way has no flavor but takes on the flavor of what has been added to it...

Being a Heart Patient my in take of certain ingredients is a "issue"....

But my jesting with Liz ...is just what it is.. She's one heck of a wonderful human being .. just wish there was more of her to go around..

Again.. good things in moderation sure is mighty tasty...

Now see aren't ya glad you read this column ...look at what ya all learned on Cheese...aaaaaaaaaah it's good any way you slice it !

I like the cube thing, too. I had a friend who would reduce wine by half (on the stove, not the old-fashioned way!!) and then freeze it into cubes. Whenever he was making a sauce he could just pop in some concentrated wine.

Liz, why did you change it to Not so Healthy? It's a heck of a lot healthier than the pizza we eat! Of course I tell myself it's "healthy" because it has something from the bread group, the meat group, the veggie group, the dairy group..... 8-) :lol:
