Beatlenut Pie

Beatlenut Pie

Postby GlennaRae » Wed Nov 13, 2013 2:59 pm

Found this recipe in an Amish cookbook. Very Good.

3 eggs, well beaten
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup margarine, melted
1 cup milk
3 Tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1/4 cup of maple syrup
1/4 cup quick oatmeal
Few pecans, chopped
Sprinkle of cocanut
Unbaked pie shell

Combined all ingredients except oatmeal, pecans and coconut. Beat well. Add oatmeal, pecans and coconut. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 350 about 45 minutes. This pie resembles a custard pie. The cocoanut, oatmeal and pecans form a crusty topping.

There you are Miss Glenna! How the heck are you? How is your sister? Miss you...the pie recipe looks good! Thanks!

I posted this recipe because I never heard of a Beatlenut Pie. I googled the name and it did not come up. Maybe it has a different name. Thanks Sharon for asking about sister Barbara, she is doing fine.

I suspect this recipe's not traditional - it contains coconut, which would have been a luxury until the last 100 years or so.

I was suprised because I'd assumed it was 'betel nut'. Betel nut is a hard, large nut. In many places in the world people chew shaved
slices of this. It makes their mouths red, and makes them salivate. It's vaguely narcotic and mildly addictive.

I've tried it (unimpressed - it tastes like tobacco, and is generally ucky).

Betel nut and coconut have similar ranges. Perhaps the name's quite old and conflates the two.

Been in Amish stores seems like I remember coconut...what surprised me was the margarine...however the ingredients remind me of oatmeal cake...not the same amounts but somewhat the same might have to give it a try but probably with butter
